Lump in quad...what is it?

I have noticed a lump in my quad on my right leg getting larger. I pointed it out to the neuro last June but he didn't think much of it.
It has gotten larger to the point where I can see the outline I
When I wear workout pants. I know of 2 women who have been diagnosed with myeloma which presented in their thighs. One died at the age of 30...

Could this be from the fact that this is my weak leg and I have difficulty lifting that foot? Or should I ask my pcp to look at it? I hate to sound like a hypochondriac, but it is making me nervous...

Blessings2You 12-08-2011 06:11 PM

Heavens to betsy, show it to your PCP! If anything, it will give you peace of mind. Now make that call!!

tkrik 12-08-2011 06:26 PM

I agree with B2Y! Have your PCP take a look at it. It could be a number of things but it is worth getting it checked out.

Please keep us updated!

I'm just afraid of 1)being thought of as a nutcase and 2)finding out it's something serious.
More the former than the latter...

tkrik 12-08-2011 06:49 PM

Debbie -:hug:I understand what you are saying. But, it's better to be safe than sorry. Whatever it is, its growing and becoming more visible. Is it red, painful, etc.?

mrsD 12-08-2011 06:52 PM

Does the lump hurt? Is it tender? Does it affect your leg in any way?

Myeloma typically makes lytic lesions in bone.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/mul...yeloma/DS00415

Before myeloma becomes visible, symptomatic, it shows elevated proteins of a specific sort in the blood. MGUS is the typical term for it.

Now, a tumor in muscle is sometimes a sarcoma. That is different.

Benign lumps along tendon areas, can be lipomas. These are benign fatty tumors.

So do see the appropriate doctor. But if you don't have the specific blood markers, in testing, it won't be myeloma.

ewizabeth 12-08-2011 06:56 PM

Get it checked out. Better safe than sorry!

Blessings2You 12-08-2011 07:37 PM

I have lipomas, some the size of bb's, some the size of peas, a couple the size of grapes. One scared the beepers out of me, thought sure it was breast cancer. What a relief to find out it was just another slightly larger lipoma. And the doctor didn't think I was a nutcase. He thought I was prudent. (Little does he know that I actually AM a nutcase, but not in that instance)

SallyC 12-08-2011 08:02 PM

Sheesh.. What everyone advises..don't walk but run to your Doc, grab'em by the collar and scream...WHAT'S THIS???

I'll pray it's nothing!!!

Jules A 12-08-2011 08:59 PM

Yeah let your neuro stick to the brain and spine stuff.

Please let us know how you make out.

Kitty 12-10-2011 11:17 AM

Debbie, as much as I really don't want to suggest a doctor to anyone right now......I've had my share of doctors this past week......get it checked out so you can stop worrying. I'm praying for you that it's nothing serious. Let us know how things turn out.

Debbie D 12-10-2011 04:33 PM

I called the pcp's office yesterday...they got me in Monday afternoon. I have an ENT appointment Monday morning to see why my left hearing is coming and going.
Sigh...does it ever end?

tkrik 12-10-2011 07:02 PM

Glad to hear you called the dr. Let us know how it goes.

As for the hearing, I hate to say this as I don't like to blame everything on MS, but it may be. Mine does that. I did a round of steroids once and my hearing got better. I told the neuro about and they confirmed that hearing loss can happen. I have heard of others experiencing something similar.

SallyC 12-10-2011 08:46 PM

Yep...what did you say? :D

Debbie D 12-11-2011 09:21 AM

yeah, I read it is a rare effect from MS, but it does occur. It feels like I forgot to take my earplug out. I clean my ears so I know it isn't a blockage. Especially since it comes and goes.
MS can be quite frustrating and overwhelming at times...

tkrik 12-12-2011 11:14 AM

Saying some prayers for you Debbie and hoping your appointment goes well. Let us know how it went.

SallyC 12-12-2011 11:52 AM

Yes Debbie, prayers on the way and please let us know..

Debbie D 12-12-2011 02:40 PM

Had a huge blockage of wax in that ear. I asked him if hearing comes and goes with wax blocking...he said it can. But he ordered a hearing test and wants me to get an MRI and MRA...due to the whooshing sound I get occasionally. Wants to make sure it isn't caused from something in my head.

SallyC 12-12-2011 02:52 PM

So, is everything too loud now?:D

tkrik 12-13-2011 11:54 AM

Glad you got the ear stuff taken care of. Wax can certainly change your hearing.

What did the dr. say about the lump?

Debbie D 12-14-2011 04:34 PM

My pcp is sending me to an orthopaedist to check it out. She told me that it is deep in the muscle, so ultrasound would not pick it up. And since I'm having an MRI in my brain, she is worried that the insurance company would refuse an MRI of my leg if she as an internist would order it. She feels that if a specialist orders it they won't refuse it.
I got an appointment with my orthopaedist next Wednesday...we'll see what's up then.

Hi there Debbie, I'm pretty new to the board but read your post with great interest; I too have a lump in my left quad (my weak leg). I noticed it about a year ago (when I had health insurance!) but assumed it was due to the water aerobics I was doing several times a week.

I look forward to hearing about your appointment Wed. as I still languish in my leg exercise diagnosis! Good luck to you ;)
Deb~

FinLady 12-17-2011 12:07 PM

Debbie,

Just some :hug: heading your way. Hope they can figure everything out for ya.

Debbie D 12-17-2011 06:55 PM

FIN!! How long has it been?
Thanks for all the hugs and support...I had deduced that it was from injecting into my quad, but I haven't done that for a long time...

Mariel 12-19-2011 11:19 PM

I have lumps in my legs, mostly on left side. They are spasticity as far as I know. My pcp's PA showed me exercises to stretch them. If I don't do it, they keep me awake, but the exercises and self massage helps. Of course yours may not be the same cause. they are in quads as well as in calf muscle. I have also had to increase magnesium.

You referred to MGUS, the precursor of Myeloma. I have that too. My pcp who is in her 30's has that. Apparently people have it for very long times, usually, without it necessarily becoming Myeloma.

ginnie 12-20-2011 04:37 PM

dear debbie

I hope you can find out what that lump is soon. Sorry that is happening to you. I will be thinking of you and hoping what ever it is can be corrected quickly. Finding any lump can be scarry. Ginnie

Debbie D 12-20-2011 04:38 PM

I see the doc tomorrow...I wonder if it's from those stupid copaxone injections I used to stick there...hmmm...
but then wouldn't the other quad also be swollen and hard?

ginnie 12-20-2011 04:45 PM

Re: good!

glad you are going to the doctor tomorrow. I will be thinking about you and keeping you in my prayers. Nobody likes to have these things investigated. Maybe you are right, if it is from provious injection site. Let me know. take care...ginnie

tkrik 12-21-2011 03:41 PM

How did your appointment go today, Debbie? I said some extra prayers for you today. Check in and let us know.

Debbie D 12-21-2011 04:56 PM

Thanks, T...
Doc took x rays and said the bone looks good. He feels that it could be a couple of things...1)the muscle area directly below this lump could be atrophying from MS, and thus is making the area above it look larger; 2) there could be scar tissue in the muscle due to the Copaxone injections; 3)the problems with foot drop and balance in that leg might have made that muscle overcompensate, thus making it larger.

He is sending me for an MRI, and then I will see him after the New Year to discuss...but he feels it isn't cancer. he also said that knee has severe arthritis now. I told him I am working on weight reduction so that I will be less heavy when having it replaced. He has told me in the past to wait to replace it as long as I can, because I'm young enough that I'll have to have repeat surgery in 10 years. Told me to wait until I felt the pain was too great or I was too restricted in movement. I'm getting close...

Thanks for prayers/ support...weird things like this scare me...

ginnie 12-21-2011 06:05 PM

wait for news

[Yep, I hope to hear from you soon. I so hope that the lump is nothing serious. I did indeed pray for your today. So did alot of others on this site. ginnie:hug:

SallyC 12-21-2011 08:53 PM

You bet we are. Prayers are still being said for you.

tkrik 12-22-2011 10:51 AM

Continuing to pray for you, Debbie! I hope all goes well and that it turns out to be something minor.:hug:

Debbie D 01-11-2012 02:54 PM

Saw the orthopaedist for the MRI followup...thickening of the subcutaneous area...no tumors or masses. He believes that it's from the Copaxone injections. Phew!!

ginnie 01-11-2012 03:06 PM

Re: glad to hear it

:yahoo:Glad to hear the Doctors appt. went well that that the problem was little. I know you were worried. It is always good to find out when there isn't a big problem. Yeh

SallyC 01-11-2012 06:58 PM

WooHoo!!!!! Yippee!!!! Good news, Debbie..:)
