We got a deer
A woman was driving down our street yesterday and hit a deer. The poor animal died right in our front yard. Never being one to waste anything, my husband loaded the doe into our car and took it to the butcher. Next week I will have a freezer full of venison. I don't know how to cook venison. HELP!

Hi knitten
I lived in Mo. in the county for 27 years. Same thing happened, someone ahead of us hit the deer, and my friend took the deer in to butcher it. Google venison. I was kind of squeemish about the whole thing. Deer meat however can be fixed quite well. I don't remember the receipes I used, but I bet you can find some good ones on line. Others who have deer hunters in the family may chime in to help with this too. ginnie

Re: I know
My family ate some of the deer, and we gave away alot of it. The poor deer did not go to waste but I didn't really like it eithor. It is a shame when these beautiful animals get hit. It is a shame for the deer and the cars! I found the meat was good from what I remember, but I did think about that animals life. I am just too squeemish. maybe I will become a vegitarian....ginnie

Coming from preachers home that sometimes was paid in material things instead of money we had our share of deer, rabbit, about anything someone would kill. I never remember it tasting bad but yet when we were kids if Mom put it on the table you ate it. That was the rule! I have a friend that makes the best venison jerky.

A very popular way to prepare Venison is to have it ground with pork, use it like any meatballs. It improves the dryness of the meat and gives it a more familiar flavor. Pan Fried over an open fire with Butter and Garlic and some onions is also very good.:D

Oh that poor deer! I'm not a game meat eater. The taste is what gets me. I've tried venison a few times, prepared different ways, and I just don't like it. I know it's probably healthier for us than hormone fed beef but I just don't like the taste.
I'm sure if you google recipes for venison a bunch will come up. |
If you contact Don at http://afarcry.info/ he should have lots of suggestions. Don's page is for Handicap Hunting, some good pictures.

My husband picked up the meat today. There is not as much as we thought there would be. I guess some of it got damaged when the car hit the deer. There seems to be a lot of ground meat which is good. I know what to do with that. I am making a roast in the crock pot tomorrow using a recipe I found on the internet. Wish me luck.

I think venison is an acquired taste.
I know when I tried it many years ago I couldn't stand the smell of it cooking.... blech. The odor just killed my appetite! I used a mint jelly with it like lamb, and that helped. Mixing it into meatballs or a small meatloaf with seasoning, and another meat sounds like a good idea to me. I just couldn't stomach it though. |
My favorite is the over the open fire way. Small cubes, 1/2 inch, fried in butter with onions. Very tasty!
