Are you "sort of" prepared?
If one depends on electricity alone for heat and trucks alone for what you will be eating in two months from now .. are you prepared?
Can you cook with wood and natural gas if a storm etc. knocks you off the grid. How many hundred pounds of beans, potatoes, corn meal, flour and the salt, cooking oil, chilies, cumin, yeast and baking powder do you have on hand? When E.R., Doctors and Life Flight have not existed for a spell .. will your Echinacea and Yarrow (stops swine flue, colds, congestion), Mullein (weed - worlds finest decongestant - green tea 20 min soak), Capsicum (blocks heart attacks and stroke) .. stores .. be a blessing to you and your neighbors? Do you know how to build a clay brick .. wood fired .. baking oven for you and the hood? Get it to 500 degrees and cook several loads of eight loaves at a time and then cook stews after it cools of a bit. With food grade 55 gal. drums at $18 .. how many do you have full of water? One drop of chlorine will disinfect five gallons of water. Will you have a shelf full of pop, chips and dip that will run out in two days? A major war in the Near East oil fields could mean ICBMs, riots in the streets, no infrastructure outside what you have prepared for. My friend was seven years old, just moved to Germany when WWII broke out. It isn't talked about to this day .. but the unprepared were in the streets shooting each other for a week or so and then things quieted down. Perhaps 5% of all Germans died in this panic .. thousands. |
I prepare for cyclones/hurricanes.
The day I start preparing for ICBMs is the day that I no longer wish to live on this planet. |
Hi Kamas Prairie
Welcome to Neuro Talk. I had to stop by and say hello. Your post is something I guess we all need to think of. Unfortunatly, our world is a scarry place. I live in a hurricane evacuation zone. I am prepared for that, and I go through that prep every spring. Getting by longer than a couple of weeks would be terrible to experience. We have friends inland, we have talked about grouping together, maybe 10 of us. Climate change has effected all of us too. Many things to think about, not just all of our health issues. We also know people who do live in NC deep in a remote part of the mountains, they are farmers, and have a working ranch. We have all talked about this at some point within our family. We must hope and pray the world stays peaceful, and that reason will prevail over all. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't pray for peace, as well as all the health issues we carry. This is my hope.
"No one will demean or in anyway violate the sanctity of another creature. Every barrier that presents or limits intimacy between us will be removed for all eternity. We will be healed of all brokenness and distortions" I have it pinned in the board in front of me. ginnie |
I'm with Lara - I'm out of here. Carpe Diem.
That was an unsettling post. Uh...why?? |
I've added a trigger icon here as yes, this is a rather strange and unsettling post to make on a social forum for chit chat about home and garden stuff. Most members here deal with daily health problems, and come to this section to relax and "get away from it all" a bit
Here in Florida, we too have preparedness kits and plans for storms. Anything can happen anytime in this crazy world, but I am not sure I want to live in that level of alarmism personally...if it gets that bad..........beam me up! |
DS and I were just doing what we do last summer when Earthquake out of Virginia hit and no way had we expected anything. No damage but for a few seconds we were like WTF?????? In a flash he found a report on FB of what had happened. DD was in Richmond, but on a bus when it hit and felt nothing (buses do their own shaking). But like any mom, I was so worried when the cell towers went blank and I couldn't reach her for hours. DS and I felt the aftershock too, she slept through it. I think she got mad we felt more of whole thing than her.

If the unimaginable happens, hope we go out in the first act and don't linger.
|
Hey kicker
That is really what I was thinking, what you said. I wouldn't want to be one of those left behind. I do pray kicker that mankind is smarter than that. ginnie

Ginnie,
We have a pool full of 55000 gallons of water, squirrels, some freeze dried food, alcohol, woods, and some party records. Bet we make 2 weeks. BUT what 2 weeks! |
Re: truth
I can't engage in a certain activity because of the laws in my state. So I don't. But a book I read, said if that lousy stuff ever happened, light the bud, and just sit right down. I read alot kicker, in fact I am a nerd that way. I read On the Beach by Nevil Shute written in the 50's and One Second After by William R. Forstchen, several others too. I would be a burden in my medical condition, so I would sit right down! That is why I really don't worry about anything except a hurricane. I sure will be booging out of town, as I am on a barrier Island. Anything else, I would not be running around like a chicken with my head cut off. I'd invite all my friends over to site right down with me! :) ginnie

Party at Ginnie's house!!!!

We are prepared for any "normal" emergency...blizzard, lengthy power outage, etc. If anything apocalyptic happens, we're more concerned about being prepared spiritually and emotionally than having enough potatoes.

RE: Amen
Dear Blessings, I believe very much in the soul of the person being the most important thing. That is where I prepare too. I try to stay as close to a spiritual path as I can be. This site is a spiritual place, I really believe that. We are blessed to have each other. I have never felt better emotionally and spiritually since I have been with the people who are here. My body may not be doing so hot, but the rest of me is on track. Take care Blessings, I care about you too. ginnie

G'day friend.
I was the first to reply to your original thread. I feel I need to reply now. I wish your grandson a safe return home. I do understand your concerns and fears. Your post was unsettling to me. I guess the words "war", "ICBMs", "riots", "no infrastracture" tend to be unsettling as surely you would understand. I had a father who was a POW on the Burma Railway for almost the whole of the second world war. In fact my father was in the ditches in Singapore being attacked before Pearl Harbour was attacked. He survived. Well, I guess you call it survive. He made it back here after those years so I guess that was survival. Here I am. I keep surviving because of him, a man I never knew. I don't want to prepare for ICBMs, frankly because it wouldn't do any good. Heck, tell me more about your ingenious fireplace. Tell me more about your tricks for keeping food safe in times of drought and floods. Please don't imagine that we here don't understand the state of the world or think about the future. |
We do have food supplies, cots, blankets, oxygen masks, etc in our 127 yr old basement but today I'll add a Bible. :grouphug:

This could be a whole new second hand thread

He took his carbine into church in Germany for two Sundays until he trusted them enough to go to church with them without it .. I studied the Effects of Nuclear Weapons in the Navy .. concussion can blow out house windows and rain Nuclear Waste down on asphalt shingles and one's carpet can catch nuclear waste if you don't have material to patch your windows .. it .. being a preparedness freak .. can actually get rather involved .. if you know the back flow of a concussion type bomb is more devastating than the out flow .. everything is weakened and ready to fall down. So, (with my Navy training) I'm like my son who had a major concussion skiing last year and then did an end for end in my Subaru Wagon and got at least two more .. concussions are cumulative and this will multiply the damage .. He was looking at several felonies after the crash because of non normal behavior (pulled a Glock on me when I told him to phone the accident in) and praise the Lord the D.A. (woman) went on the net when I told her I didn't feel a concussion should be the basis for a felony, studied the effects of concussion and dropped all his felony charges .. can you believe that? The Tangled Webs .. we weave. Hats off to all servicemen. |
Yes Hats off to all service members
I thank your family for their service. My son served in the first Gulf War. My second son (adoption of the heart) followed my son into the Navy is there for life. He just got back from Afganastan, after a nine long month tour. He is home until June where he will be deployed again with two young children at home.
Both boys have told me, they pray that this world will use their heads instead of warfare. The result of which none of us would want to see, nor would be prepared for. We have been warring with each other since the beginning of mankind. Can't we ever learn by our mistakes? I know there is evil that has to be removed, such as Hitler, and those who kill their own people as what is happing overseas right now. However, most of the things should be resolved with the brain not the bombs. If we can't learn this lesson, I personnaly would not want to be around anyway. We must move as a civilization toward a world that puts their minds into science to help not to hurt. Humans are in danger as long as we fail to learn. Ya know I think prayer can be a good thing too! ginnie |

Hi Kicker
I have a feeling you don't follow a set path either. If enough of us stirred up the pot, mabe this world would be a better place. ginnie
|
ginnie,
I'm thinking you got some hippie or gypsy blood in you. My brother always maintained I was a gypsy child stolen by a band of roving housewives. |
Hi Kicker
definate about the hippie, not so sure about the gypsie. I am adopted and really don't know where I came from. I was a senior in HS in 69'. A wannna be flower child, my folks put a tight rope around me so I couldn't stray too far. Being adopted I was protected. Hindsight tells me I was a handful to deal with, and I still am. I don't follow a path at all! If the sign says "stay on the path" I am the first to venture off the path. I liked to skydive before all these health issues. I rode a protest train to canada 6 years ago to fight the drug companies and the Governments unwillingness to negeotiate with those companies. I read to the point of the ridiculas, I never stop. What are you like kicker? What are some of the personality traits you have? I know a little about your medical condition (MS) but not alot about you. Since you are invited to my party, I'd like to know about you. Hope this day finds you in good spirits. Looking at the news, that is a challenge initself!:D ginnie you can PM me any time you want.
|
For awhile DH and I would tell people I was in a wheelchair because of the sky-diving accident. DD had a kid sleep here before something, we told him. Tattoo boy (as we named him) said "Righteous". Picture a surfer wann-be with lots of tattoos.
We were shopping at Trader Joe's, DH said to lady in front of us at register that I (me) used to go out with Jon Bon Giovvi  People believe anything you say.:o Harmless stuff. I wanted to be a hippie but was a little too young. (graduated HS '74) |
Re: tattoos
I always wanted to get a tattoo, I just didn't like the idea of needles. I am a bit of a chicken with that. I have made up for that with all the needles I have gotten the past few years! Did you ever surf? I never did much that way, just boogie boarding. I do live on the coast and I watch the sufers, mostly wind surfers where I am at. Occassioally we get the big waves though. My son was born the year you graduated. The 70's were good years. ginnie
