DH getting knee replacement tomorrow

On his left knee, I found him an excellent doctor but I am still worried. I'll stay with him overnight at the hospital. This is routine surgery now but things can go wrong. I'll report in after he is safely through.

Thank you for the good thoughts and prayers....

Ok, I got him to the hospital at 8am for his pre-op stuff. He was supposed to have surgery at 10am. They didn't get him in until after 2pm. Then it was after 8pm before they got him to his room after the surgery (a two hour operation). This doctor is supposedly great for joint surgery but this hospital (Central DuPage Hospital) is not on my happy list right now. :( I sat on hard cushioned seats for twelve hours waiting.

He got through the surgery just fine but he was also miffed at the lack of coordination at the hospital. Could it be because he is on medicare? I'm exhausted but thankful he is ok, but my gosh, why have us there so early and not have the surgery until more than six hours later than scheduled?

Dejibo 02-15-2012 08:09 AM

There could have been emergency cases tying up the operating room he had scheduled, and had to give way for. He could have been waiting for the right amount of nurses or anesthesia guys to have on hand so your husband had the right amount of help. After waiting for emergencies to clear they MUST scrub that room like the queen is coming, due to how easily bones can get infected.

I am sorry you had to wait so long. Waiting is very hard whether its for ice cream, or a loved one. I am glad your hardest hours are over. Now ...let the healing begin!

How are you both doing this morning?

I had a similar situation...went in for a repeat wrist fracture surgery that was supposed to occur at 11 am. Got into the OR at 3 pm:eek:
Seems he had a complicated surgery before mine...took hours and hours.

I was so hungry...I wanted to cancel and go home so I could eat, but DH insisted I go through with it:o

He's doing good this morning, just had his first physical therapy. I came home last night instead of sleeping there because I was sore and exhausted from sitting all day. He has a beautiful private room though with a nice view. I wish it was closer to home, it's about an hour away. I have to write a long paper for my class today and clean the house so it will be uncluttered and clean when I bring him home.

He had some pain during the night he said but they put him on a stronger pain medicine in his IV. He makes the nurses laugh so they take good care of him.

karilann 02-15-2012 12:58 PM

Continuing to send positive thoughts your way. Glad everything went well with the operation!

tkrik 02-15-2012 08:08 PM

Glad the surgery went well. I hope he has a quick and uneventful recovery. Thanks for updating us.

So glad it's over and he's doing well. Good for him for getting on the nurse's good side early!

You must be one tired Wiz. Take care of yourself. Glad that all went well once it was done.

Debbie D 02-16-2012 03:53 PM

Yes, sweetie, do take care of yourself...hope he's home and doing well...

ewizabeth 02-16-2012 11:22 PM

He had severe pain yesterday but he had been self medicating before the surgery so he had a high tolerance for the pain meds. Tonight they had him pretty medicated so he sounded better but he was pretty loopy. He might get to come home tomorrow and I have everything all ready so all he has to do is come home and sit in his chair with the kitties. They miss him a lot. I think he might have a walker for awhile until he heals more. It will be good to have him home, I miss the snoring and complaining, lol.

Dejibo 02-17-2012 08:41 AM

The first week to ten days is quite painful, but after that it should start to calm, and become more tolerable. Kitty love always helps. :D

ewizabeth 02-18-2012 08:45 PM

He came home yesterday and feels a bit better but very cranky, I think due to his inability to help himself. He can't shower for now. They came in and changed his dressing and checked on him today. His physical therapy starts Monday. I went and picked up his scripts after work last night and more tonight. He will feel better when he can shower and get off most of those meds. I'm just going to grin and bear it and remind him that he's cranky because he's sick. :plain:

Debbie D 02-20-2012 03:44 PM

My DH hates being sick...and is cranky whenever this occurs...I think you're right...maybe it's feeling vulnerable and unable to do it all...
hope he improves every day...
