April 2012 exercise thread
Are you wiggling in public?
I have been so sick for so long, and have missed so many chances to wiggle myself in public. I put on 5 pounds! Its a beautiful day out there. (yesterday was above 90 in NH!) so, we went out for a short morning walk. 1 mile. Our normal route is between 3 and 5, but I am just not able to give what I normally give, so I am back to baby steps. Saw an ab glider thing (eliz hasselhoff version) in Walmart and almost got it, but the more I pondered the more I realized I would use it twice, and throw in the towel. Wanted a treadmill, but the more I stand the worse I feel. A sitting bike? well...they were cheap and awkward. so, I came home with new shorts instead. I really need to motivate myself. I am extremely far down the ladder on get up and go, and I figured this bunch is exactly what I need. To see others out there will inspire me. so, what did you wiggle in public today? |
Sorry I don't have anything to inspire you. But just wanted to let you know you are not alone. I don't wiggle anything, I stumble.
|
Well, I DID work out yesterday. Did 5 min of treadmill to warm up, then 30 min of weight machines. I was so tired I just couldn't get back on the treadmill or elliptical.
I haven't been working out much since the hospital visit last month. I did some swimming while in Hawaii, because I had worked out and wrenched my knee, so I needed some low impact exercise. I get so tired when I even walk nowadays. I think it's because I'm so out of shape...:( Dej, do you have a Y or some place where you can swim? My neuro told me it's the best exercise for MS patients. |

I wiggled my everything for the Spirit world today, and they all applauded loudly..;) |
We have a pool in the motel that is about 20 minutes away, and its so popular that its crowded, and I hate crowds! Have a huge lake behind my house, but its not the cleanest thing I have seen, and they keep adding chemicals to treat milfoil and sending out warnings to not water your lawn with it, or allow your animals to drink from it, so...that scares me. I would love to get a pool of my own, and someday I will.
For now, I will just leave early in the AM when its cool and everyone else is quiet, and I can walk and enjoy the birds, and a wake up conversation with DH. Bought a new pair of walking shoes, so that should motivate me. I came home and mopped the bathrooms and kitchen. now, im gonna seek a cool place to lay down. |
I rode 75 miles weekend before last and 43 miles last weekend. This coming weekend is the big ride and the weather forecast is looking about as bad as it can get in turns of making the riding difficult. Right now they are predicting a 20-25 mph headwind blowing against us all the way to Austin. I can't imagine how bad it is going to suck trying to pedal 95 miles into that on day one. I just pray that the weather guy is totally wrong this time!

Did my lowly mile today. It was a slow mile and I have a ways to go before I have the pep and drive to want to go further, but at least I am able to get the mile down. I need rest after and it takes a few hours to get my legs back under me, but im trying.
What did you wiggle in public today? Anyone try Zumba? what did you think? |
I went for a very short bike ride. Was still a bit unsteady.

New to MS
I learned I had MS a few months ago, but I have exercised since I was a teen. Now I'm 67 and it is a habit in my life just like brushing my teeth. Often I don't feel like working out, yet once I start it makes me feel better. If nothing else, I feel righteous. Sore muscles feel good because they are a sign of growing strength.
How does a person handle exercise with MS? Are there times when you should not exercise? I've noticed that sometimes I'm really tired, so I slow down and watch my heart rate. My foot drags so I hang on tight. Some things that help me exercise are to pair up with a friend, try different types of exercise to find one you enjoy, give yourself a treat when you finish, play music that pumps your mood, get a dog who needs to be walked, or buy a cool outfit to wear while you exercise. |
Welcome Comstockgal. Nice to meet you.:)
I don't know if I'd go as far as to say, sore muscles feel good, but know what you mean. Exercise with MS is a give and take operation between keeping muscles and nerves strong and working together - and - MSfatigue. Don't push yourself to exhaustion. Rest between exercises..pace yourself. Glad you joined us. |

Most of us start off slow, and build our way up to our normal routines after a flare up of MS. I find I am wiped out, and feel like I havent exercised in years after a flare, so I will take my 5 mile walk and chop it down to 1 mile or even a half if I feel that I am pushing to hard. Please speak to your MD if you find the exercise makes you so tired you cant think or function. Start slow, build your way up. Exercise is so good for you. it gets blood flowing to your heart, your brain, and helps burn calories. We find we slow down and many of us put on some weight since the diagnosis since we are not as active as we used to be. Good to meet ya keep wiggling! |
Walked 1 mile today. I felt let down that I couldnt turn that corner, and keep going, but I know to do so would wreck me, so I stuck at the one mile mark. maybe next week I will take it a few steps further.
Get out there and wiggle something in public! :grouphug: |

But I did 50 chair dips and 50 wall sitting wide leg calf raises, each in sets of 10 today. I have been working out really hard for about a month, I was running for 45 minutes three times a week. With strength training three of the other days and one day of rest. Then for the last week I started feeling really bad, with worsening of old symptoms and new symptoms added in. So I backed off, I actually hadn't worked out at all since Tuesday, until today. I've been trying to lose weight for just over a month. As of Tuesday I had lost a whole 4 pounds  :( Saw the neuro on Tuesday, she says don't lose any faster than that! Okay, well I backed off working out because of the way I feel.... I have lost three pounds since Tuesday! I was loving running, I want so bad to do it again. Hopefully before too long I will be able to do it again! Glad to see you are stopping when you need to instead of pushing too hard and hurting yourself. I have a hard time stopping when I should. |
Running!!!!! What's that?????
|
Oh My Goodness! I simply did not want to get out there today. I tricked myself! I bribed myself and I lied! I allowed myself to have the Ipod 4s and told myself I could hear any songs currently on it. Then I promised myself to download a new one when we got home. I promised myself a walk alone, but when I looked back, DH was shadowing me.
I did my mile. I did it begrudgingly and out of spite, and stomping like a small child. I did not want to go, and I am having massive panic/anxiety attacks which kept telling me things that are not true. LIARS! So, I soldiered thru it. now im going to wiggle myself back to bed for a bit. yesterday was a bad bad day and I am going to ease myself into tomorrow. |
I did 15 minutes of weeding the garden today (it's gorgeous outside today) then I came in and couldn't get out of the chair for hours! Now I'm trying to build the energy to clean house and cook
Edit: Okay, I made a very simple dinner, did a little laundry... Then the neighbor took the kids and me to the beach so our kids could play, then she took us all for ice cream. So I also got a few minutes of walking on dry sand chasing after kids! |
joined about 13000 other riders and rode 161 miles on my bike over the last two days from Houston to Austin. Still carrying the batdanna, and I think it is up to about 20 signatures now, if not more.
|
its raining. im staying inside. :)
|
Wow, do I have energy!!
Started out by taking the pup for a 20 minute walk. Then went to the gym. I did as an MS video about exercise suggested: I worked on elliptical for 10 minutes. Then I did 15 minutes of upper body weight training. Hopped on a treadmill and walked for 10 minutes. Then did 15 minutes of lower body weight training. Then I was done...whew!!:) |
Did my usual PT stuff :). I've been a bit slow due to humid yet cold weather.. yuckyyyy!!!
|
it spit snow and rained. I hid in the house yesterday.
Today is nicer. I will take a short walk. |
It spit a little snow here too, early this morning. It's sunny and about 50 right now and my body must be adjusting..as I felt strong enough to charge right into my PT OT BS:D

The last several days I have walked my little legs off! DH wants a new truck (or a used one) and asked permission to sell MY car so we can be a one car family. We have been talking lease vs buy, and figured out that if we lease, we can get a much better car for the same price than if we bought a used one. There are great incentives out there for you to be the one to rent their car and roll the depreciation off of it. I can make a car dealer cry, so off we went. We hunted the lots till we found something I knew I could get in his budget, and full of the toys I want. Long story short we signed an agreement for them to bring a SUV in from NY for us to see. its exactly the one we want, with the upgrades we want. So, I have walked car lots for days! Used all of my mental energy to whittle down bad deals into good deals. In the end its a GREAT deal!
Saturday a friend is coming from out of state to buy DHs current truck, and that means house cleaning! I have avoided going out for walks because I know I am spending tons of energy right here under my own roof. the cars are both spotless, the potty is ready for company and I have good food planned out. (crock pot style) Im beat! Im so happy that the search is over, and the DH got what he wanted. I never drive anymore anyway, so having two cars is silly. Taxes, insurance, reg, inspections, bla bla. So, we got a hybrid SUV. NICE! Are the rest of you wiggling things in public? |
I'm wiggling for you getting a new car. I'm going to drive mine until it can't be brought back to life for a reasonable fee. Then I'll find a nice used car where I won't mind the dings and people parking to close to me.
|
The give up of my car is huge! its truly means MS has won. I am an amazing driver! I am well trained, and can drive fire engines, big rigs, motor cycles, and tiny sports cars with ease. now...it sits to rot in the driveway. its been an ongoing discussion for years. I gave up.
I didnt wiggle a thing! I slept in! We have company company and that will be wiggle enough for me. |
Did my usual....move it or lose it.
Weather sucks the big one today.. Dej. I don't drive my mini anymore either...it drives me. Having it in my garage is both good and bad. It's there if I need it:) and yet a reminder of how independebt I used to be.:( Wiggling where noone can see me..:D:Dancing-Chilli: |
Took a needed break from working on my car for 20 physical laps in the pool.
|
DH went to an out of state family fishing trip, so I am home alone. I promised to not walk without him here. I will do some Wii yoga and other things, but I want wander the neighborhood alone till I am more stable on my feet.
What did you wiggle today? |

None a yer dang bizzness.:D |
Things wiggle on me that shouldn't :o and what should.....doesn't.
|
its a beautiful day here. I snuck out (ssshhh don't tell) and had an early morning walk. I did one mile. I had my cell phone on me, and stayed on the main road. it was nice to be out at MY pace, and listening to MY tunes, without feeling like the DH was on a forced march.
The cats are happy. There was a bird stuck in the catio yesterday and the chickens came running in like it was an alligator! I had to go let the poor thing out. then the cats got all brave and went out like they were going to tear it up. chickens! I have chickens for cats. Scared of a birdie. |
