Angle of the collar bones

Is there a "correct" or normal angle for the collar bones? Or maybe a range? And what is it? I didn't find much on the subject when poking around.

I've been told in an ideal, perfect world, your collarbones should be about parallel to the ground. Obviously, there are ranges and variances.

If you have some pre-TOS collarbone pictures of yourself, it's a good way to see if there are any differences - more defined, angled differently, symmetrical, etc.

One thing I've noticed since surgery is that clavicle has receded, so it doesn't really match my left side. I guess the first rib pushes the collarbone out and makes it more visible. I guess if I wore plunging necklines this would be more of an issue! :D

I was looking for images of normal clavicle/collarbones , you're right, not much out there.
I can't believe all the collar bone piercings images I saw..
And the broken /malformed ones.

Weird I was just comparing pictures of mine last night

Mine crack all the time. I think they move

mspennyloafer 05-19-2012 11:50 AM

Im thin so it sticks way out

How can you tell if it is parallel to the ground:confused:

There's such a thing as actual bone piercing? Egads.

Ms.PennyLoafer, you could probably take a leveler (from a hardware store) and look in the mirror. It never occurred to me to wonder if they were parallel to the ground!

The latest PT is saw said ideally they should be at about a 30 degree angle up towards the shoulders. Mine are horizontal (so parallel to ground), and he said that was contributing to my tos, putting a stretch on the BP and also narrowing the space between clavicle and first rib. That was his theory anyway.

okay i got this angles app on my droid

i am messing around with it, but mine are actually very angled, still trying to measure. i believe that relates to the shoulder somehow

my rib cage is majorly twisted too.

im going to read this later

25-30°

My collarbones angle up 25-30°. I had an angle finder in my toolbox and I laid it on there. I have no idea what normal is.

mspennyloafer 05-21-2012 12:53 PM

it seems like everyone here is different,

does that mean it doesnt really affect things?

Jomar 05-21-2012 01:54 PM

I can't hardy find mine:o, but they do angle up/out to shoulder area, not level.

Very few images on Google had level collar bones.
Probably one of those maybe it plays a part, and maybe it doesn't things.

Look at a skeletal image. I had one from a TOS link, but having problems uploading.

Looking at old pictures, mine were symmetrical and somewhere between horizontal and 30 degrees. Both were very prominent. When my TOS was at the worst, my left probably angled at 60 degrees and was barely visible. Today, they both seem to reside at 45 degrees, but the left outer 1/3 is hard to see.

I'm slightly obsessed with looking at people's clavicles and the Academy Awards and Emmy type shows provide excellent clavicle viewing :D.

Jomar 05-21-2012 05:24 PM

LOL yes they are all so slim...some are really noticeable too.

mspennyloafer 05-22-2012 07:23 AM

My collarbone on my right side is angled more and sticks out which makes sense because that shoulder isnt stable and sticks off my back

But my other side has the elevated rib :(

chroma 05-22-2012 03:46 PM

My TOS is primarily on my left. When it was at its worst in summer of 2011, it was tilted ever so slightly down.

I'm guessing that tilted slightly up is the correct anatomy and that going to far in either direction causes problems or is a sign of problems. But I don't yet know what the healthy range of the angle is.
