After reading your post, I want to try walking in my town's pool. Thank you for the idea. Sorry I don't have any advice : (

I have walked in the pool at the gym. I push through the water in a lunging style. I would walk for 45 minutes to an hour. It calculated to almost a mile. It felt great. But, the gym does not accept my Medicare Pass anymore.
One benefit of swimming is how it stimulates blood flow without raising your pulse or BP. Plus, the refreshing feeling is very therapeutic. |
Wow. I too went into the pool and it felt wonderful. I was able to do a couple of laps. I was afraid to go under but I'll take it. I'm trying new old things slowly to see what I can and cant do. We dont know until we try.

I am so happy you were able to have that experience!!!! Which leads to:
Ohhh I am sooo excited! I got invited to my friends pool this saturday and I am going to try to swim too! :p Did u just walk or did you do like the overarm swimming? |
Swimming is a good activity. But if you are swimming laps, your HR can rise quite quickly. I find it best to take time between laps, and to change strokes. Try to build yourself up little by little. Don't go overboard.

Thats good to hear. The only time I have felt relatively normal and active was on a boat trip in Egypt when I got in the sea and went snorkelling with my kids. I was concerned about the facemask putting pressure on my injury site but can safely say it was the most refrreshing and satisfying thing I have done. The wetsuit gavee me buoyancy so I didn't have to work too hard and it made a nice change to be able to join my kids for an activity.

Snorkeling in Egypt sounds amazing :)

I have been going to an outdoor pool with the kids a lot this summer. At first I was very apprehensive. A pool with lots of screaming kids was a guaranteed headache I thought. Surprisingly, it's almost turned out to have the opposite effect. Sometimes I arrive with a slight headache, and it disappears after jumping in the cool, refreshing water.... despite the fact I'm surrounded by kids yelling, splashing, and clinging to me. I've found it very therapeutic, as others have mentioned.

Wow, this is great to come across this thread and hear people's experiences, because I just went swimming today for the first time in a very long time (since before my accident 2+ years ago). It felt great and can't wait to go back later in the week. My time in the pool was only 10 min of simple laps, partly with a kick board. It didn't occur to me that this might help my ongoing symptoms, but everyone here seems to have at least had a positive thing with swimming, great!! :-)
