Damn!..... I Fell !!
Ingredients:
-One happy to see me 'pup' (active 2 y.o. 13" beagle) -one 62 y.o, 255 lb., PN man, w/balance problems, trying to pivot on one foot, to turn around and walk in another direction. Result: I Fell !! Tripped up legs with a pup underfoot.... causes big oaf to fall down! Damn ! The dog is always very happy & excited when I get home from work- hopping, & jumping around, & thru, & between, my feet & legs. She got me off balance and I couldn't stop it ...... BAM ! (like a log - but flailing, all the way down) My right knee is tender & sore, a bit swollen, & discolored today. When I fell, the pain was excruciating and I felt 'wet' dripping down my shin. I thought it was a fracture and the bone had come thru & I was bleeding. Nope! Just the PN playing tricks. Only a bruised knee & part of the shin -fortunately it was on the w/w carpeting in the hall, but it felt like it was concrete..... PN again.:o I felt like 'Ralph Cramden' (Gleason-'The Honeymooners') doing a pain 'shtick'. Pounding the floor, moaning "Arrrgghhh!.... Owww!!!..... It HURRTTS, IT HURRTTS!!" :Bawling: & trying to catch my breath. My better half sez "should I call an ambulance?" I say....gasping.... "let's get my pants leg up and look at it first" (thinking it was poking thru the skin-a compund fracture- blood - Ewww!!)- "but let me just lie here for a minute, and get my breathing and blood pressure, close to normal-OK?".:Dunno: Upon observation, one would have thought it was 'all in my head', and I shouldn't have made such a big thing out of it- nothing looked wrong....until the knee started to swell, & I iced it down.(20-on, 20-off) I'm not mad at the dog, but I did say... "honey, I tole ya...... that dog will kill me one a these days". :frown: (I must've said it at least once a week, since we adopted her from our local chapter of "Animal Rescue" - last Sept.) I haven't had a fall since I went in the 3 ft. hole on the construction site (it was in a dark place, never saw it til I was 1/2 in & 1/2 out of it) about 2+ yrs ago. I still (and will forever) have the scars from my ankle to my knee - on the shinbone- same leg, the Rt one - it looks terrible when I wear shorts in the summer :(). Damn!....... .....I Fell ! |
You poor thing. http://bestsmileys.com/sad/6.gif
Hope you are on your feet (without the darn dog) soon!!!! lol Mel |
O.K., bright side... nothing is broken, Dog is still alive! Down side, wife has to cater to you for a few days while you heal. Poor dog has to sit by your side and wonder why you keep looking at him like that every time he looks up at you! Up side, dog will probably get more treats sitting by your side as you sit in a chair healing feeling guilty for shooting him dirty looks.
We all wish you well, and if I could order some of Mel's muffins and have them shipped to you I certainly would! (Of course, I can't cook myself, but money can certainly buy some happiness!) Keep us up to date on your healing, and how it affects your PN! You can come here and grumble, we'll listen! Save your wife and dog from a few bad moments. Terri (Seams) |
Sorry to hear about your fall...but
brilliant use of smiley's Bob!!:D
Get better soon, and don't overuse that knee! |
First off, about falling....
You are in VERY good company here.
Second, DON'T DO THAT!!!! Lastly, during your 'recovery' period, it mite be time to talk to yourself [and the dog] about obedience classes? Having fallen on the same knee twice so far, arent' the stars you see amazing? Just like a science fiction movie but for real.. I sure hope you don't have to keep it elevated for weeks on end like I did tho. I really hope not! Get well faster than normal! - j |
Sorry to hear about the fall, Bob--
--and hope you will heal all up real soon.
Until you do--as you've already noticed, whenever you get another injury, peripheral neuropathy will do all sorts of fun things and in around the injury site to convince you that you have a worse injury than you do. I've written before how those of us with neuropathy are thereby far more prone to compressive nerve symptoms than the average person--and selling of any area will certainly compress nerves and produce all sorts of weird sensations. I know that every time I bruise/bang myself heavily (not often, fortunately) I can look forward not only to the "normal" nociceptive pain of the bruising, but a bewildering variety of nreve shoots, pulses, tingles, "liquid running", "banding" in and around the injured area for a while. Fortunately, at least so far, these tend to fade as the injury heals, though it often takes longer for these neural symptoms to depart than it does for the pain caused by swelling/tissue damage. |
Oh, no.... a dreaded fall!
I did one similar... 2 yrs ago it is now. I had terrible pain in the knee, I iced it
and it only bruised-- no lasting damage....BUT....I had damaged my tendons in the leg..the Adductors. These did not blow out until a month later with devastating results. I am still not 100%, although my pain did lessen over a YEAR! So I would watch it.. Stay off it, and let it heal. (I was stupid and continued to work, go to the gym, etc--<kicking myself>). I did not feel anything in the groin at first...that came later. I think the knee pain masked the other pain. You will have to watch the Dog Whisperer on Nat Geo channel and learn to get that dog to stop getting in your way. Falls, I think, are the worst danger to us. They can be fatal (broken hip) or just debilitating like mine was. You have my deepest sympathy. That fall of mine was stupid, and changed my life in a very negative way. I tend to fall/trip at least once a year, but mainly I don't injure myself, like the major one in the bedroom 2 yrs ago on a hard wood floor! |
Whew!
I'm glad you weren't seriously injured.

Ouch!
That could really have been a bad deal. I am glad you are OK. Thankfully, nothing is broken and you didn't fall on the dog... Hopefully, everything will heal up just fine and you will good as new quickly.

I fell on different occasions. Twice in the streets on the ice. No big deal.
Once, after I had washed my ceramic tile floor with Pine Sol (never did that again). I fell on my knee and when you have degenerative joint disease primarily in your knees, well forget it. The pain was horrendous!!! BUT, the most outlandish time I fell anywhere was when we were at a flea market in front of a church. I was walking along, looking at the various tables and such, when all of a sudden, I am in a hole. At least my right leg was in a hole. It seems that they were planting a tree on the sidewalk, and they had dug a hole, but no one covered it up on that particular Sunday. Imagine, looking to your left at a flea market table and in a flick of a second your right leg is in this hole and your left leg is bent up to your neck. I never was so surprised in all my life. I started screaming, Alan comes running. OH, AND IF YOU THINK ANYBODY EXCEPT ALAN CAME TO MY AID, well forget it!!! And this was in front of a church no less. They just looked at me. When Alan got me out of that hole, I was bleeding, scratched and just plain mad. But I recovered, and so will you. And you have this nice little doggie to keep you company. So ice it and pour yourself a cold one!!! melody |
Jeez Bob, you must have come down pretty hard mate to make your knee bruise & swell, one consultation i suppose, its better that it happening inside on the carpet than outside on the concrete  ouch !!
We have an old 18 year cat thats always had a bad habit of walking right in front of ya & getting in between your legs and tripping ya up, but when i come home from hospital with 2 crutches, she done the same trick again but this time i couldn't balance my way out the way and she got all my weight of on one crutch on her little paw, jeeeez, she screamed out and took off like a bullet, she is ok nothing broken thank god, she wouldn't come near me for the rest of that day but the next day, back to her old tricks again. I hope your recovery is quick, mate |
Whoooa
Gosh Bob,
I'm so sorry to hear about this. And like the others I hope you aren't seriously injured. Little dogs can get you, I know. I have 3 of them and am always grabbing a wall or a piece of furniture trying to dodge them. Hope you recover from this fall soon. Billye:) |
Hey Bob,
Sorry to hear about your spill, take care and at 255 you are gonna have a problem fitting into a Hoveround :winky: Lanny |
Bob, Bob, Bob
So, I guess this means you will not be doing any http://bestsmileys.com/dancing/11.gif for awhile. Very glad to hear you did not seriously injure yourself - I'll bet you are very sore today. Take care and take it easy for awhile. http://bestsmileys.com/undersun/4.gif

Hey! I wasn't aware that so many of you would even bother with my post.
I'm grateful for so many well wishes. Mel, your tree hole story sounded exactly like mine with the constructiion site, Leg-up-to-chin and all! ;) Brian, I've a 17 year old cat that's the same way, too. Now I've got a little beagle and a Russian Blue, that are bound & detrermined to kill me! We rescued this ***** from a labrotory cage. She had to be fostered and socialized for 4 months before we got her. She's a loving little pooch that always wants atttention, but we can't figure out exactly how she wants it. She won't cuddle up to us, cause she never had human contact- and really is just learning how to play, cause she was in that cage since she was a puppy. For 2 1/2 years, she only had human contact when they let her out to exercise or 'do her business'. She does sleep on the bed at nite, not in close contact, but she has to be near. I wake with two paws on my chest and a nose in my nose, when she thinks I've slept enough and its time to scratch her ears or her belly. She will hold still for a while for that, but when she doesn't want to walk on her leash or sees a stranger- she lays down on her back with her belly & paws in the air. We hired a professional 'dog whisperer' to help us with her, & she's come a long way since Sept. He can get her to do anything, the very first time- its amazing. All we have to do- is try to get her to do the same thing for us. (practice and time). Lanny, Well.......... I'm kinda sensitive about my weight. I was 220 before Lyrica (and the need for a lot of prune juice)! It helps with the pain, but I've had to compromise. I'm tryin to lose, but its not working well. Thanks a lot for reminding me (.....not) :( Billye, Rose, Mrs D, Glenn ........thankfully I seem to be OK & went back to work today, just no kneeling on that knee for awhile (I tend to 'get down' to my work). I'll keep an eye out to see if there's any residual effects for the next week or so- but I think I'll live. It was just that the experience was so ...... amplified ! Yes, that's the word. Everything was so magnified in the symptoms. Its weird, PN can make me numb and I have to watch out for things- cause I examine my legs and feet every day, and I find scrapes or bruises or cuts or .........whatever - and I've no idea when or how it happened. Total surprise! But this came home..... BIG TME! Didn't realize how severe it would feel. And it was comparatively minor. Boy, I sure hope that I really never have anything happen that is certainly very painful to the 'normal' person. I can't imagine how I'd react. They probably would think I was faking it! But thanks y'all - for your concern. I'm glad I've got this place to come to when I have things like this happen. My wife even really doesn't understand - and she's a R.N. w/a B.S. in nursing, and over 40 years in the profession. I appreciate this community.......greatly. |
Bob,
Well I am late to the uh, party?? - oops - not really. But I just have to say that your attitude is absolutely . . . well, you know . . . just the greatest . . . I am sure there is some word or words that should apply right now - but the applicator is stuck. So, the best I can do at the moment is wish you well. And as long as you maintain that kind of an attitude, I ain't gonna worry. I am sure you will let the group know if we ever need to REALLY worry about you. So far you have handled things that most of the rest of us will, fortunately, never get to experience. rafi |
Bob Promise Me....
ABSOLUTELY PROMISE ME that you will get an x-ray of that knee by an orthopod Monday! My case just before Turkey day is why I hope you will.
Fell, went to 'urgent care' [an oxymoronic misnomer in my book] after 4 hours, it was first determined I'd broken my foot...HUH? I'm here for my KNEE, the foot was LAST YEAR! Huh? OOH! You're right. DUH. Fractured knee-cap. OK. Can deal with that....so I thought. Well, after visit to the orthopedist the next day, all indicated I should be able to put weight on that leg in 10-20 days...No can do? At least, not very happily. Another x-ray, and well what ya know? Fractured the knee bone too! It only showed up once it started to heal. Don't forget ever, that neurontin, lyrica and keppra and all those other things come with the price of CALCIUM DEPLETION...ask any dentist about epileptics and their teeth...that's where it showed up first for me. In the meantime, take whatever painkillers you need, don't brave it, be super duper careful and ASK for F/U pt... Docs never think of it? Till later -  Who of all of us is 'gimpy, gumby or Chester'? I think we all need 'Bones' from Star Trek to 'make us better'! - j |
I hope you make a speedy recovery and you are soon up and about walking your dog
|
Well Bob, I guess we all have stories. Five years ago, I fell over my son's 96# black lab, Ceasar. I had let Ceasar out when I went to bed, it was May and he wanted to lay on the porch. When I woke in the early morning, it was still dark and I walked into the kitchen for something. When I went back to my bedroom, Ceasar had moved to my doorway and I dove right over top of him. I landed on me left knee and my face. The next spring, I got cellulitis in that same knee, never had anything hurt so much in my entire life. So yup, we understand.
Feel better. |
Sorry to hear about your fall Bob. Be super careful, ya hear?!!!
|
Bob, I just couldn't resist!!!
Know what you need????
A VIRTUAL PET!!!! They can't knock you down, make you fall, WHATEVER!!! Here you go!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Digital pet From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Virtual pet) Jump to: navigation, search Tamagotchi was a popular digital pet in the late 1990s.A digital pet, also known as a virtual pet, is a type of artificial human companion. They are usually kept for companionship or enjoyment. People may keep a digital pet in lieu of a real pet. Digital pets are distinct in that they have no concrete physical form other than the hardware they run on. Interaction with virtual pets may or may not be goal oriented. If it is, then the user must keep it alive as long as possible and often help it to grow into higher forms. Keeping the pet alive and growing often requires 'feeding', grooming and playing with the pet. If the interaction is not goal oriented, the user can explore the character of the pet and enjoy the feeling of building a relationship with it. Often these games use realistic visual effects or interaction to make the pet appear alive and give a sense of reality to users. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know people who carry these things around!!!! At least they don't have any broken bones. lol Melody |
I remember those. One of my kids had one on a key chain.
I think I need something real, even if she is over-jealous. I can't remember ever not having a pet, except for the time after my divorce & when I was single for about a year or so. I remember the quiet and peacefulness distinctly. I don't think that I'd do well with one of those digital pets. If I had one, it would probably die! |
You need a pet who makes MUFFINS & PATATAS!!!!
Yes indeed. That's what you need :D |
Mel,
You oughta be a srraight-man for a comic. I can think of at least 3 responses to that, but none of them is printable on this site (hmm....always thinking about... ) ;) |
