Crash & Burn
I managed to have my first "real" fall in over 4 years. Just turned and started to walk across the kitchen floor, my toes dragged, and next thing I knew I was on the floor. Usually I stumble but catch myself. Scared the whosis out of my husband.
All I could think of for about three seconds was, What if I broke something? My knee took most of the impact, and there's a huge bruise and some swelling (I iced it right away, just in case) I'm a little lame, but no harm done, at least physically. Of course, now my husband thinks I'm going to fall any second--he doesn't want me to go downstairs. Uh...not ever? Hellooooo? What's frustrating is, I don't know how much more careful I can be unless I use a walker in the house and take a step every two seconds. That was a close call and it scared me, too, but I'm trying not to let the "what-ifs" fill up my mind. |
B2Y, I just had a "close call" in the hallway but managed to catch myself on the laundry room door. The cat left a present for me and I stepped in it and slid. YUK, I know. But it's so hard to see things like that on wood floors.
I'm usually very careful and always look down the hall before walking down it. I was fortunate that I didn't fall.....and will probably be hypervigilent for a while.....but my day is coming. I hope you feel better. It can happen to any of us. DH will calm down after he gets tired of running up and down the stairs for a while! ;) |
Hope you are doing O.K. B2U. And also Kitty. Take care you guys. :)
|
B2Y, I hope your knee feels better soon. Your fall sounds similar to mine when I fall when trying to turn. For me, either my toes catch or my upper body turns and the feet stay planted.
After my falls my BF will inevitably say "Be careful!" Like I wasn't? |
That's pretty much what happened to me, Sparky, a combination of both.
I've only had three "big" falls (I've tipped over a few times), and each time I remember my PCP recommending I take calcium because of the MS. I asked him if people with MS are more apt to have osteoporosis. He said, "No, they're more apt to fall." The older I get, the more I think of that. |

Glad you're ok, B2Y...it's kinda goofy how these bodies do this things. Gives ya a lil "Oh my goodness, how did I do that?" moment.
I fell UP the stairs tonight...with a dish in my hand & my DH laughed with me. No harm, no foul. Just every day stuff here. Just don't let anyone tie pillows to your hips & knees...saw that on a movie once...it's funny :D but I don't think it's very fashionable!! :yikes: :grouphug: Be Well!! |
Function before fashion, I always say. Maybe I'll look into a crash helmet.

Blessings & Kitty,
How do you each feel today? ANN |
I'm so-so today physically, lame shoulder, sore knee, stiff muscles. But it's the psychological effects that I'm having trouble with.
|
I'm okay! I'm glad I didn't pull any muscles this time. Last time, when my body moved but my feet stayed firmly planted, I pulled a muscle in my back and boy was that ever painful. We don't realize how man muscles we use until we injure one of them.
B2Y, glad you're not hurt too badly. Don't let it bring you down (no pun intended :o). We've got too much to look forward to. :) |
Sorry to hear about your fall. Hoping things imrove quickly both physically and emotionally.
|
i'm glad you're both doing ok.
b2y, would a cane help with balance? take care you 2. |
I know all about falls too. I had a bad one in October and thought Id broken my hip! Thank God I didnt, but I sure was sore and bruised. I just had a fall last night in the bathroom. Tried to stop myself with my cane and wound up putting the cane thru the bathroom door instead! Nice hole to fix now, but no other damage. Im back to using my walker now around the house. DH insisted, I had to agree. My cane just isnt doing the job now.
Glad to hear you and Kitty are feeling better. Falls can really mess with your mind not to mention the body. |
I fall a lot. I have a walker and I even trip over it. I have broken bones. I am sporting a lovely sprain and bruise on my left thumb and my right shoulder is making it painful to take a deep breath. I dread sneezing!
I am sorry you fell and glad you did not break anything. I am taking oxycodone to sleep, can only sleep on my back right now and that is difficult because I am a side sleeper. Misery loves company and I am just dropping (uh, excuse the pun) in to give you sympathy and virtual tea. |
Thank you, Aarcyn, but may I have virtual chocolate instead?
Judy, I always use a cane (or walker) when I'm out of the house, but have done fairly well with being careful and wall-walking for balance. Guess I'll have to come up with Plan B. Or C, D, E, whatever we're up to now. |
Hi there
That feeling of falling..... when you know it is happening and you feel yourself getting closer and closer to the ground..... and can't do anything....sickening. My last fall, I tore muscles in my leg - no fun at all, six months on and I am still having trouble with it. I hope you are ok, and that there are things you can do to make it less likely to happen again. Lyn |
Ah yes, I know that feeling of falling and the loss of strength to do a darn thing about it. I'm especially afraid of falling, because I'm alone, so have to call 911..:(:o
I hope you are healing quickly, Blessings. |
Kelly, how are you doing? I hope you are stronger and pain free soon..
|
Firsts of all...:hug: Kitty & B2Y...so scary when our bodies don't do what we direct...
I hope that you both use a cane when things might not seem right... don't want you to fall & break something... |
I do take calcium for that reason, with 1000 mg of D3 per day. My bones are said to be good, but I did have an incredible fall two years ago, which put me in the hospital and care centers for 3 months. I broke my kneecap from falling down stairs. The stairs were too shallow, and I was trying to carry something in one hand instead of holding on to both railings. I would never try to live in a house like that again, but that's all I had when I was in Seattle for 9 months. My knee heeled very well without pins, just a long cast.
My feet are numb. I haven't had a foot drop occasion for many years, but the numbness means I must always hold on to railings on stairs. As far as walking around the house, I don't have any rules except keep being aware of where my feet are going, and do exercise my feet (rotate ankles, rise on toes, other PT exercises). I live alone, so falling could be bad for me, but then, I do have those solid bones. Quote:

B2U and Kitty.........Sure hope you're feeling better from your falling experiences. That's one of the worst feelings.....seems like it's all going in slow motion.....until the landing....:eek::eek: PTL nothing was broken.
Like a few others, living alone makes things like that especially scarey. After falling quite a few times, I finally decided to get my first powerchair. Of course there are still times when I have to stand and transfer, so I hang on for dear life and make a conscious effort to keep track of my feet!!!:D Falling, along with the resulting pain, gets "old" really fast. Take care and feel better... |
Sorry you had a fall, B2U. I hope you mend quickly.
When I moved nearly 3 years ago, I knew I'd be worn down from the effort of moving. But in the last 3 years I've had only two falls, and that's not a bad record for me, considering how moving does a person in. I went very easy on myself and even paid the movers to do a lot of the packing, something I've never done before. Since then I've been trying to stay well rested and eat right. I think that's a large part of the battle, but it's surprisingly hard to do. It's been years since I broke a bone. Early in the MS, before I knew what was wrong, I had a few fractures. No fun at all, and you never really recover from them if you're over 30 when they happen. You'll probably have arthritis in the fractured area. So it's good to avoid falls, but it's also very good to exercise. |
