antibiotics with SFN

Hello everyone,
I think I recall that there are certain antibiotics people with neuropathy should not take. I tried to find something under search but couldn't. Does any know which ones we shouldn't take? I am currently taking Amoxicillin 875mg twice a day for a sinus infx. It seems to really be causing inflammation in my stomach.
Hopeful:)

fluoroquinolones such as avelox, levaquin and cipro,

Sallysblooms 09-20-2012 09:26 PM

I stay away from Mycins, especially Gentamycin. Can be ototoxic. I even have that on a med. bracelet.

Of course the meds listed above also.

Be sure to eat lots of good quality yogurt, kefir, or take probiotics. I got C Diff from Amoxicillin years ago.

Looks like the bases are covered well on this thread so far.

Ditto on the Kefir.... Lifeway has 12 strains to help heal up after antibiotics. It is far better than yogurt.

Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic and kills off alot of
bowel flora. A better choice for upper respiratory infections is Zithromax, which does not do that quite so much.

To avoid if possible:
Cipro
Levaquin
Avelox
other fluoroquinolones
Flagyl
Tindamax
Zyvox (which is usually a drug of last resort)
Macrodantin/Macrobid

Unfortunately this list seems to grow by the year!

Thanks to all of you. I will try the Kefir. I will have to look it up I am not sure what it is. I din't know you could get C-diff form antibiotics. Mrs. D. I am looking at the list of antibiotics you sent. I have had severe allergic reactions to Cipro and Sulfur drugs. Wonder if it is in amy way connected.I'm sure I will never know.
As a side note are any of you gluten free? I am and was wondering if any of you saw the news concerning rice and arsenic. Everything I eat down to my milk is just about rice base. Now I don't know what to do.

This is coming to many stores now. It is not expensive and is very tasty. Kroger's and Costco now have it near me.

I've been now using this instead of yogurt since last Sept 2011.
It has be one of the best things I've tried.

The women here will find extra benefits for female issues as well.
That took about 2 weeks for me.

Mrs. D, I have been taking Kefir (strawberry flavor) for more than 6 months now. I stopped for 2 weeks because of my lactose intolerance diagnosis. However, with the antibiotics that I am on now, I need to protect my digestive system. Although Kefir is 99% lactose free, I still take lactase before drinking it. Anyway, my concern is the sugar content. Do you have any issue on the sugar content of Kefir (i guess its 20grams per cup).

mrsD 09-21-2012 06:45 PM

No it does not bother me. I started with the plain one last year.

Then recently I now use the fruit ones. I don't eat alot of sugar anyway, so this is staying below some tolerance level for me.

I have a small bottle every other day or so, now. I started with 4 oz daily of the plain. These person sizes come 12 to a box from Costco now. A quart can last me almost a week.

I still cannot tolerate alot of sugar, but this seems to be okay for me. I think most of the sugar content is from the fruit in it.

I have some lactose problems too, and avoid ice cream for that reason. I use Lactaid milk too. But I think there is negligible lactose in the Lifeway Kefir.

I do find the lactic acid in it, best tolerated with food however.

Thanks Mrs. D, I looked at the site the products look good. I am going to get some tomorrow. I think I am at the point where I need them. Thanks againe

mrsD, do you consider d-ribose as something that has to be factored in when we assess how much sugar we are eating?

mrsD 09-23-2012 11:50 AM

From what the studies show, ribose is not metabolized as "sugar" with insulin.

One study I saw but that link is now broken did a study up to 10grams a day and there was no increase in blood sugars for diabetics.

This study found some blood glucose lowering effects:
https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q...sk6iO5yyCYjieA

As will all things, moderation is the best way to go. I've never used more than 10 grams a day, and usually keep to 5 grams.
I seem to get "immune" to it after several months, so I go off, and restart a few months later if I feel weak or fatigued. So I don't take it every single day but in spurts of a month or 3.

Here is a new study on risks of retinal detachment and fluoroquinolones:

http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article....icleid=1148331

This may be related to the tendon rupture issues, by affecting connective tissue. That is just my impression.

I buy the 1 quart and its good for 5 days. I have not seen the ones that you mentioned in small sizes. I buy mine from the base because its cheaper and no tax. Sams does not carry the Kefir (and I am not a member of Cosco).

I take Kefir everyday because I think I have more requirements now that I am taking combo antibiotics for the M.Avium.

Mrs. D, my gastro mentioned about Align. I am wondering if you have information about thhis because it has never been mentioned in the posts (or maybe I miss it, if any). I want my digestive system to be healthy because of my other issues and now I am taking the antibiotics.

I am taking Lactaid (fat free) too after I was diagnosed to be lactose intolerant. How I wish my other issues could just show up like this positive lactose intolerant, at least, it is clear what to avoid:)

Its good to know that the sugar content does not bother you. I was just concerned about it. Though I am not diabetic but there was a time before my brochoscopy, my sugar was 106, and that was after fasting. But after that, my sugar has been normal.

mrsD 09-25-2012 08:32 AM

I used the plain Kefir for several months. Then slowly started with the flavored. That was when I was very strict with fructose.

I use the peach flavor in the quart now. But not in large quantities.

The 8oz little bottles of Blueberry and Strawberry are at Costco,
12 to a box. So if I have those, I don't buy the quart size at Kroger's.

I don't have it everyday anymore, but I do have it at least every 2 or 3 days. I may have one for lunch, for example, or a snack.

Align is detailed to doctors by sales reps I believe. It is only one
strain, and IMO is quite expensive. (Bifidobacterium infantis 35624)

If you go here you will see the thrust to professionals:
http://www.aligngi.com/health-care-professionals
There are studies showing this strain helps irritable bowel syndrome. So while it may be healthful in some ways, it is not the only organism that lives in our GI tracts.

Example:
http://lifeway.net/Community/Blog/ta...2/Default.aspx
There is also evidence that multiple strains are also helpful.

hopeful 09-25-2012 11:24 AM

YOur right Mrs. D. I found the align to be very expensive! I stopped using it because of that. Hopeful
