Went to Neurologist yesterday

He did dx me with pcs, he doesn't believe in pain meds, instead tries to heal you naturally and told me to start a diet that cut out certain foods saying that everything was related to serotonin, he also prescribed me topamax which I thought was a migraine preventive, not for relief

when i asked he said it was for both and the only side effects were minimal, although looking around I see alot of people have had adverse effects

Because of the fact that Ive had the same headache for almost a month now that never goes away how would topamax help me? and I believe it actually caused my insomnia to get worse as I haven't slept all night and I became very irritable and angry which I haven't really experienced before I took it

could i notice side effects from just a 25mg dose that easily? and he also told me that sleep will come back naturally and to not worry about it because no one can die from sleep deprivation

How hopeless of a Dr's visit was this?

Hmm, sounds a bit flippant, eh? Regarding sleep and healing.

I can't speak about the experience you had with topomax.
I was one of us for whom topomax was not good thing; was rx'd topomax by neurologist, given a glossy manufacturer's coupon + couple sample bottles along with the handwritten rx.
Topomax was not right for me. Your experience may vary of course.

That in itself seems to be a result these days.

if you don't mind me asking what sort of examintaiton did he give you ?

Abel_in_Fl 11-02-2012 09:21 AM

the only test he gave was a basic motor function test, squeeze/pull my hand, stand on your heels/tiptoes walk a line with one foot in front of the other etc, very basic, although he diagnosed me with it before even doing any of that, just by me saying how I been feeling

also the fact that i already had a loss of appetite only eating once or twice a day and that was a main side effects of the topamax isnt helping, now I dont feel like eating at all

my mother was so happy to hear that I should be fine and i tried to show optimism for her but shes oblivous to what really needs to done and just took his word, I feel hopeless now because that cost 300 dollars and I have absolutely no money and I have a feeling that it was just a huge waste of time and money

I know for a fact that I haven't slept for 5+hours since my accident on the 30 of september, i cant go to sleep until 5 or 6 in the morning and wake up every 45 min to an hour until 9 or 10 and just lay around until noon, I know I can't recover at all at this rate

on top of that im expected to start a new job next week and I know i won't be able to at this rate and will probably be counter productive in recovery

sorry to be such a downer but I don't know what to do

Many here have had not so good experience with nuerologist. My first encounter I felt was good. It quickly went down hill. Every visit after the first became a frustrating test of my patience. I would give my laundry list of symptoms. I kept a health journal so when my memory failed me I could go to a written record.

Not all nueros are of this opinion but the really good ones are as rare as hens teeth. It did not take me long to realize that the nuero subscribed to the opinion that if I just rested I would get better.

While I have certainly healed I still have issues. Not to be all gloom and doom, I have returned to work on a limited schedule. I no longer feel that I have totally lost my mind.

Initially for me the changes were so deep and profound even my family thought I would not work again. My father in law even told me that if it was needed he would support me the rest of his life. Do not despair. Be patient with yourself. GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO HEAL.

Many try to do too much too soon. Frequently this results in a relapse of the worse symptoms. Or as I found out a ER visit and sometimes hospital stay.

Hi Abel

Who did you see down here? Not all neurologist are great as you know. If your heahaches don't go away, maybe I can suggest someone OK? You need your sleep, and a doctor who has some compassion. Maybe meds. arn't the answer, but someone who understand headaches can do more for you than what this doctor did. PM me, there is help out there, you just have to go find it. It took me alot of years to find the right physicians. it really did. ginnie:hug:

I went to Stephen Norris ginny off state road 64, have you heard of him?

ginnie 11-04-2012 01:04 AM

Hi Abel

I first saw King, then Tesse, who did my first surgery. Followed by research and patient to patient talks with the results from Dr. Kevan Boyer, on Cortez. Dr. Boyer was fabulous, bed side mannor and caring dispostion were the best I have ever known. I have not heard of your doctor. Seek Boyer for the TLC and brillant mind. Watch out for his nurse however, that one leaves something to be desired..... You need a referral for Dr. Keven Boyer. PCP can and will, if you are not getting the help you need from your current doc. I hope you can find some compassion and relief Abel. I am here to listen anytime you need. Let me know how it goes for you. ginnie( I can do some research on your physician if you want.....)

What is the nature of the work, the new job that you were to start this week, Abel?

Abel_in_Fl 11-13-2012 01:12 PM

It was for a family dollar, I went to the interview and got the job but was like a zombie the whole time, I was overwhelmed just being there for an hour or 2

I think I need to get this sleep thing figured out before I even consider 34+hour work weeks

ginnie 11-13-2012 04:11 PM

Hi Abel

I agree with you 100%. Get the sleep thing figured out. If you attempt to work with this situation, your immune system will NOT function right, and your healing cannot take place. Get to the sleep clinic, see Dr. emese Simon, don't attempt work. I know someone who works at the family dollar, the responsibilities grew and so did the hours he had to maintain, until he was the only one there from opening to close. Sometimes these jobs wind up being more than you bargained for. Gosh I hope you find answers real soon. ginnie
