What are you reading?

My husband was sitting reading his newspaper a few days ago whilst I was busy rummaging through these!....

Brain cooling, heat intolerance and cranial veins
http://www.upright-health.com/brain-cooling.html

CNS fatigue provoked by prolonged exercise in the heat
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...?dopt=Abstract

Brain temperature and exercise performance

I´m now also looking for some more good books to curl up with by the fire and get through the long cold winter months that we have here.

Are you reading something good?

Hi Anacrusis

What are your interests? If you have any interest in Science, please consider
Physics Of The Universe by Michio Kaku, some really facinating future things. I am a book worm, no quesion about it. Send me what your favorites are. "State of Wonder" was my favorite so far this year, by Ann Patchett. Hope to hear from you. ginnie:hug:

pingpongman 11-08-2012 06:31 PM

I spend hours on my computer working on Family history. I enjoy the old photos the most. Second helping others find their "cousins".

ginnie 11-08-2012 07:28 PM

Hi Ping pong man

I read with interest that you like doing family history. Is there any chance you could help me? I am adopted. Laws are not retroactive, and I was always told I had to go to court for my adoption history. I know my mothers real name, and the location of my birth, little else. I was not ever told the medical situation of my family, nor anything about possible sibblings. My folks that adopted me, never prevented me from trying to find out. It was the cost of going to court. If you can't, or don't care to, I certainly understand. I have always held out hope, that someday I would find out the truth. ginnie:hug:

Send me a PM with what details you know. You can't give me too many details. I'll see what I can find.

Good post, Anacrusis. I'm currently reading my eyelids.

When I can read - though not usually books because holding them is difficult and printer's ink makes me sneeze - I'm like you. Anything historical, science-related or, well, pretty much anything that I can learn about the world. My most recent book was, "The Source Field Investigations" by David Wilcock. Just the chapter about research on plants being hooked up to polygraph machines to see if they elicit an emotional response was worth the price of the book.

Be cautious of Ancestry.com because they will fool you into believing you are having a one-month only subscription but then keep charging you month after month. You literally have to cancel before the end of that first month to not be charged!

Ginnie, I'm sorry you don't know where your ancestors are from. I don't know the laws in the state you're in but there must be a way you can get your adoption records! I'll bet a lawyer - even a pro bono one - could get them for you! BTW, I like Michio Kaku too!

Annie

ginnie 11-08-2012 10:28 PM

Thanks Pingpongman

I will dig out my adoption records tomorrow. I appreciate you even taking a look at it. I am 61, and my chances that my mom is still on earth...well you know the issue. Never too late to try. Thank you ever so much for even considering this. ginnie:hug:

ginnie 11-08-2012 10:34 PM

Hi Anne

It was always due to lack of money. I was never in my birth state all that much. Private adoption agiencies are very hard to deal with. Pro bono, very hard to get, as most of the agiencies are broke, I tried with other issues. Went to this adoption agency when my daughter was born with birth defects. My son also has health issues as do I. From just a medical point of view, I wanted to know all these years. I will keep hope alive with pingpongman, God bless him just for trying....ginnie:hug:

So excited to have these. I am SO glad I did not write down my preferences, Ginnie as I would have limited myself to my normal parameters in reading. I´m a tabula rasa person really. I´m so excited to listen to Kaku and I´ve been down the Amazon so already have a little connection there. I´m wishing you the best of luck with your really BIG questions

That is truly fascinating, Pingpongman! I hope you only got good surprises. A teacher who was extremely posh and always picked on me presumed she was related to royalty but they later traced her immediate ancestors to being sheep stealers. I heard all our records were destroyed in the 2nd world war, otherwise I would have been on it already :laptop:

Hi Annie – I don´t have enough eye problems or sensitivities to not make me read books but it is interesting to hear how other manage too, for example Stellatum´s post about Kindle´s etc. I only have minor problems reading on computer I get motion sickness and some tracking issues but otherwise I have no excuse! I will definitely get that book by Wilcock , go straight to that chapter and see if there´s a valid reason for me to continue talking to my plants  Hey! hope you are feeling better...:)

AnnieB3 11-09-2012 03:12 AM

David's book is so jammed pack full of research. It's amazing how much we don't know about our world and universe. If you have an open mind, you'll love it. Left-brained, controlling individuals might pooh-pooh everything in the book and call it "pseudo science." ;) I was going to go to a conference he's having this weekend but my MG had other plans.

ginnie 11-09-2012 08:01 AM

Hi Anacrusis

I love to meet other readers. This excites me. Keep talking to your plants, they do feel. I am not sure what, but there is something going on there.
I read alot of physics, and over the course of the years, this unusual habbit has turned serious. I am understanding more now, than I ever did as a kid. Better late then never. If you have other reading interests let me know what they are.
It is exciting to know, someone may be able to figure out at least what nationalatiy I am, that would be cool all by itself! Life sure throws some twists and turns in it, and some of them are good!
Take care, ginnie:hug:

Audiobooks

I have started buying (and receiving) audiobooks because vision issues. I would be happy to pass along after i am done - is there a way to setup thread to post what i have, wuld be willing to pass on? I received bossy pants by tina fey and not my usual taste but very light, entertaining and nice change of pace from my normal legal, educational reading.

Stellatum 11-09-2012 12:07 PM

Many libraries lend out audio books, and you can download them from home, so you don't even have to leave the house. See if yours does!

:(.......I´m going to a conference in a few days and am planning to meet my first live MG friend. I think I have overplanned :Crowded: but am very excited :yahoo: The conference is the stable element that is always going to be there - But I´m just thinking, what are the chances of two myasthenics feeling well enough to meet each other on the same day at
exactly the same time!!!

pingpongman 11-09-2012 04:50 PM

Oh you are going to love it!!! I can't really describe the feeling but it is good.
Mike

StephC 11-09-2012 07:53 PM

I agree, it is nice to meet someone else with MG! Sending good thghts your way that both of you are feeling great at that time!

So sorry about MG overruling your week-end plans, Annie.

The only thing predictable about MG is its unpredictability.
This is one of the factors of MG that I have difficulties with = especially when I am forced to miss an event or opportunity I had been looking forward to. :Sigh:

Take care of yourself, Annie. :grouphug:

p.s. An interesting book I just finished is:

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell

My opinion is that some of our over-thinking, over-analyzying physicians (mostly neuros) might benefit from reading this book.

LOL - don't quote me though.

I happen to be pretty "okay" with my current neuro's treatment plan and the professional and respectful manner in which I am treated.

It's just a couple of those other guys who I have dealt with who might be receiving free copies anonymously from me. :D

Yep Blink is good book

Yes, read that book. i believe Malcomn has another out. ginnie

I now have ALL the books in this thread sitting in front of me, looking fwd 2 reading them all :) :) :)

The one I absolutely must start with first is this one:

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell ..............

´But Gottman, it turns out, can teach us a great deal about a critical part of rapid cognition known as thin-slicing.
"Thin-slicing" refers to the ability of our unconscious to find patterns in situations and behavior based on very narrow slices of experience´

A good friend also recommended another one which hasn´t arrived yet:

Hi Anacrusis

Yes keep on reading! Currently I just finished a whopper called "Partical At The End of The Universe" I have read physics for about 10 years, and this one went way deeper into all the particles, how they fit together, and just what the Higgs field and Higgs partical is. Very in depth reading and well over my head. I started "Cloud Atlas" last night. Interesting beginning.... the language is very different.

Have a good holiday, and let me know what you read. I won't live long enough to read all the books I want to! take care, ginnie:hug:

Thanks Ginnie! I looked up both of those but would probably need another lifetime to read & understand them!!!!!!!
BTW... I´m worried I won´t live long enough to learn all that I´d like to learn!

For example:

:grouphug:......be a pop star
:doctor:.....study medicine full time
:nopity:.......study violin full time
:Clever:.......Phd studies
:Dancing-Chilli:.......become proficient in at least 3 dances
:sing:.......voice lessons
:stirthepot:.....become a gourmet chef
:laptop:........get a degree in IT
:Hum:........study neuroscience
:Viking:........study history
:Demonstration:.......politics
:Mexican:.......sociology
:Red eyes:.......psychology

Take care U2

ginnie 12-20-2012 04:13 PM

loved your post!

Yep, I want to learn more too! Make a bucket list, and start checking them off. Even if you did just a couple of them, it makes you feel so much better!
I think some of those on your list may just be doable! ginnie:hug:

Brain change

I looked up those books you posted. I think the ones about the brain would interest me. I go back to "Cloud Atlas" tonight. Very odd but interesting read once you figure out the language of the first character. Have a good night happily engaged with reading. It is cold even in Fla. perfect night to read. ginnie

If you only read only one of the brain ones, read ´The Brain that Changes itself´

Interesting, hopeful, uses a lot of real people examples in real and fascinating situations.

Thinking about what you are reading now, another one you or others might like:

Love of Stones – Tobias Hill

Happy New Year 2 U :)

Good reading conditions as well over here in Europe at the moment

Anacrusis

PS. I also got to read some writing that hasn´t been published yet by a couple of forum friends
and that reading experience is the most memorable one of all :)

ginnie 12-27-2012 12:23 PM

Hi Anacrusis

Thanks for telling me about those books. I am still trying to figure out "Cloud Atlas" as I go through it, it becomes more confusing! I am glad I did not see the movie. I can read physics, but this book confuses the heck out of me. Just out of shear stubborness, I will finish it.
Have a happy New Year too. ginnie

Anacrusis 01-02-2013 07:04 AM

I´m feeling quite fantastic lately but that has nothing to do with my good attitude or any process of spiritual introspection.
In fact my good attitude came after I started feeling better…..

A while ago a friend of mine recommended me a book by Louise L. Hay boldly pronouncing that most people create their illness themselves
and I really should read through one of her books and get control of my symptoms using my own thought processes somewhere near the root cause!

I was somewhat provoked by this announcement, nevertheless I will read through a little,
and more than likely am sure I will find something or other like I usually do.

Had I read the book in 2005 I may actually have even avoided 5 years of progressive myasthenic weakness
as I would have intercepted it just in time and perhaps used proactive measures against contracting any illness in the first place.......right?

Seriously any one read this stuff???

Gotten any good use out of other books out there that actually helped with how you look at things and handle your own symptoms?

Anacrusis

PS.... Ginnie, I liked the Physics Of The Universe Michio Kaku guy. Nice, clean presentations - and just how I like my information delivered!

Maiden8680 01-02-2013 11:31 PM

I maybe a minority here but, I actually read manga (japanese comic books) and it's what I've been doing the last few days since I have a very sore back :(

That sounds rather intriguing :)
Do you not also read them when you have a good back?

Re: Book

Yes, I read Physics of the Universe too. Yes good reading and pretty easy to understand. The author also goes on Nova and the science channel now and then. Finished Cloud Atlas, terrible.....as was the movie from what I heard. Now reading several to see which one to stick with! have a great new year. ginnie

If ever there were someone out there with a rather large inheritance and looking for a good cause to invest in, I would first help to allocate a large percentage into MG research, another percentage to creative projects with an MG basis initiated by forum members, and then a small amount to make people with MG´s lives a little more comfortable.

Maiden you would thus be entitled to receive a year´s subscription of free mangas from the fund!

PS Am now starting on ´Source field Investigations´ :)

And I did get through Louise Hay and read it just like I planned to. If there is only one thing I remember after reading this book it´s that during a period of symptoms I could imagine and project thoughts about myself as a healthier person in the future instead of remembering back and referring to how healthy I was in the past.....
