Totally Off Topic: Peppermint Hot Chocolate

I've been getting a lot of peppermint hot chocolate's from McDonald's. At $2.65 for a medium, I started thinking I'm getting ripped off, but I didn't have an alternative. So I've been trying out different things. Cocoa mix + peppermint flavoring (from baking aisle) was gross, candy canes & peppermint discs only dissolve partially. My husband has been hearing all about this b/c I have a sore throat and I want something hot that tastes good.

So he was at Walgreens today for something unrelated and saw these peppermint candies they are called "Peppermint Soft Puffs, Lighter than Air". The brand is "Nice!" The bag was 99 cents and there's about 30 in there. Success! Put 1 packet Swiss Miss milk chocolate cocoa mix + 2 of these candies in your mug. Add 6 oz. hot water and voila! I'm sure people much smarter than me have figured this out a long time ago, but I wanted to share just in case. Because sometimes it's the little things that can add happiness to our day. I even put 2 of these candies in a cup of decaf coffee today and oooh that was good, too.

Anybody want to share their favorite this time of the year treat?

bizi 12-12-2012 11:46 PM

Oh that sounds good and much more affordable over the mcdonalds!

I love lindt dark chocolate truffles, with the creamy inside that melts in your mouth! yum! only 5 carbs for one ball. Have to get the blue wrapper ones, dark chocolate! sorry they are wonderful!

Thank you waves! You like dark chocolate, too? I've been drinking the Nestle Dark Chocolate hot chocolate mix packets. Those candy bars sound good. If I had those I'd probably need to hand them over, too. :)

I heard Brian Williams report on the NBC news a couple of months ago that a little chocolate in moderation is good for you.

Last night I had chocolate Klondike bars.(Chocolate inside, and out)It was yummy. I had some peppermint candy too. I was on the edge of having to much. I've been given a Christmas Basket, and candy canes are sticking out of it. BF:hug::hug::hug:

Yes, it doesn't say dark chocolate on the package... but it actually is. makes them particularly delectable. on some of the boxes it did not look dark. made me wonder if they had changed the formula - that would be a shame. i was afraid the quality would change when i started noticing the Nestle logo on them - Nestle bought them out. But then i found out it had happened years before, i just was to young to be aware of such things.

anyway, i had After Eights maybe 2-3 years ago and they still had dark chocolate then. i'd normally buy them for Christmas but it slipped my mind. and frankly the way everything is going, i'm not going to rush out and buy anything else.

Perhaps i will buy some for Easter... and i will update you on the dark chocolateness.

of course, after staring at all images and talking about them now i have a real hankering, LOL! :D so, who knows, i might get some before. i could scarf them away and eat one a day.

hmmm... we'll see. i have to go to the store tomorrow... eeps.

I saw a box of junior mints at the Dollar Store recently and I thought hmmph, I wonder how those would taste in the freezer? I resisted but may get them next time. I love minty things but had never thought of putting them in the freezer until this thread. Sounds very refreshing!

My review of the frozen York Peppermint Patty!

Hi,

I enjoyed the minty-ness and the texture of the Pattie (chocolate nice and "crisp) but I missed the chocolate flavor
The flavor of chocolate is dulled in the freezer.

Hubby and I have an ongoing dispute about
choc in the fridge
VS
choc at room temperature

Cold chocolate almost has no taste. If he offers me some of his that is cold, I say no thank you.
'Hard to believe I turn down chocolate but that is true.

this is exactly the problem i have with frozen York patties. I've never even tried freezing an After-Eight for the same reason.

Some (but not all) frozen desserts are specially made with chocolate having a different formulation that keeps it "healthy," I've noticed. For instance, i have had some chocolate chip icecream with chocolate bits that were as-though-not-frozen, and others where the chips tasted like soluble plastic! I loooove mint chocolate chip icecream, but this is one of my problems with it... you never know what you're gonna get! ;)

Quote:

yep. i won't eat regular chocolate if it's been refrigerated... this is troublesome in summer when it's hot enough here that chocolate melts. i've never tried keeping it in my med-reserve drawer. that is sheltered enough it may remain cool enough. i'll have to remember next summer.

i heard that the chocolate spread "Nutella" actually is made in two formulations - a winter one and a summer one! i don't know if it is true, i have no official source of confirmation. but i thought it was interesting, plausible, and smart.
