Withdrawal issues, any tips

My SCS is buzzing the pain away but having a lot of withdrawal issues. I have dropped from 250er nucynta and 4 15mg roxy to 200er nucynta (2 x daily) and 2 15 mg roxy (split in half or quarter) daily for first taper.

Any tips, thoughts. Having rough time sleeping and other issues.

Over the years, I have been able to have major reductions or elimination of the meds. What worked best for me was to do a slow taper off of the er med first and then address the breakthroughs. I did it slowly to avoid major withdrawal and aggravation of the fibro. Since the fibro is an ongoing problem, I always kept a modest amount off BT on hand to control a major flare. This should not be a race. What does your doc suggest?. Best wishes.

The dr asked me to try to avoid the breakthrough BUT she did refill the breakthrough for 4x a day (15 mg roxy) which I cut in half or quarters. Seeing her tomorrow because of insurance issues with ER meds today. Thank you.

Be easy on yourself!

Maybe try tapering with one med at a time?

Agree with Rae - do one at a time, and in smaller increments if possible. Not sure how long you have been on Narcotics...but I am currently tapering off of mine, and it has been a few months of just tapering my ER meds...and am almost to the point of starting my IR meds. Doing them both at the same time is a recipe for disaster :(

In my thread around Aug 2010

my doc managed my withdrawal to NOTHING. Can't do this alone safely. Need oversight.
Please,
M

My doc decided to give me 30 days at 200mg ER twice a day so it looks like she is going to take it slow. I have been on narcotics for about 6 1/2 years and hoping to get off the ER meds at least. Thanks everyone.

Isn't it amazing that you are in this position to be doing this, after almost 7 yrs! I know it can be a very 'uncertain' time for you.....I was gonna say 'frightening', but that doesn't really fit. I'm glad doc is taking it slow. That's the key.
I'm very susceptible to depression and when I'm in a bad flare and on day 3 of my fentanyl patch (when it starts to wear off), it's like a big dark, ominous cloud settles in like a 'black fog'. I hate it! I just do the best I can to keep my eyes on God and continuously pray for peace of mind.

You'll be fine, I'm sure. You're a tuffie

Clonidine is working great but putting me to sleep! Any ideas?

Drowsiness and Clonidine

Not exactly what I wanted to hear! But thanks!

Rrae 02-16-2013 02:23 PM

Some of the meds I take make me drowsy and I know how this can be a nuisance. I'm not familiar with clonidine or how you take it, so I'm not much help here, but if I have something going on which requires being fully alert, I try my best to wait to take the med until I'm at home and hopefully later in the day.
I have become used to a couple of the meds and can tolerate them better than I did at first.
9 times outta 10, I end up falling asleep during a movie me and my husband are watching. .....not such a fun date :o

I also notice that if I have eaten, I tend to get sleepier easier when I take the drousy meds.
Drinking a fizzy soda sometimes helps as a 'kicker'.

That reminds me

Of fizzy lifting drink!! Yeah from the wonka movie years ago..... it would perk a person right up:D

Hi njbackpain

Just try to go slow in scaling down the meds. Hope you are being helped enough. I would rather be sleepy, than jittery as I was for 6 months coming off morphine. It is worth the trouble to reduce the medications. I will be thinking of you and hoping it doesn't last long. All of us are behind you. ginnie:grouphug:

Njbackpain 02-16-2013 04:27 PM

Clonidine has helped ALOT with the withdrawal (.1 mg twice daily) but so sleepy. Tried the energy drinks (5 hour type) but not working. I did call the doc but sleepiness is better than the other issues. Thank you all again for thoughts and prayers.

Njbackpain 02-16-2013 04:29 PM

Oh, btw, next week I taper down to 150 mg nucynta. So, only 4 more steps, I hope.

Mark56 02-16-2013 06:16 PM

It will work

This is definitely one of those items regarding which the wait is well worth it. Getting there carefully and with doc's care as you are is the only prudent way. Pulling for you, praying for you!!:grouphug:
