Peripheral Neuropathy

I have been suffering from this since Nov. It came right after I had back and sciatic pain. MRI showed L4 L5 S1 were herniated. I say a surgeon and he seems to be not to worried about the herniated disc's and budging disc's and bone spurs. He was more interested in my leg in just where a 50 lbs wooden skid cause a massive hematoma on the left leg. So he ordered a EMG test for only the left leg. Meanwhile and hand and feet are so bad. My hand are so red and swollen I can't wear rings, they are frozen most of the time, or burning. Same with my feet. I also noticed my toe nail are curling into the skin. I go back on the 16 for the EMG test results. Not sure if he will operate on the back, try more test for my hands and feet. Who know!!!!

My hands just seem to be getting worst.. they are numb for the most of the day and wake me at night. Pain seems to be going up to elbows now..

This could be carpal tunnel. I'd suggest you sleep with the splints made for carpal tunnel. They will stop you from flexing the wrist and compressing the nerves. Give it a try.

I was thinking it is someway tied in with herniated discs. It started with red and swelling, a dr said it was a blood disorder where the blood does not reach my hand and feet and will get worst.

mrsD 04-06-2013 08:08 AM

The carpal tunnel also constricts blood flow.

When my carpal tunnel flared up seriously, (from hypothyroidism) during my pregnancy years ago, the pain
went up my arm just like you describe. Most drugstores and
even WalMart have the wrist splints affordably. They can help quite a bit. They are worth a try when pain is a huge issue. Often more than one thing can be going on you know. ;)

I will try tonight. I have splints from CTS before and this pain and swelling is very different. I have never had surgury for this but use to wear the splints. I will have my Dr, Check this out. Thank you for you explainations, very imformative.

There is another thing that can cause swelling with pain.

It is called angioedema.

Here are some very informative links. The information on this is quite new and many doctors have not been trained to recognize or treat it properly.

Somewhere on this link are photos of the swollen hands and other body parts that can occur.

more here too:

The splints are helpful... to take the pressure off that compression point.

I had a huge angioedema attack from a common drug..lisinopril, for blood pressure. Now I am recovering, and soon will get the testing for angioedema, which my doctor thinks I have had all along! My hands will swell up sometimes, for "no reason" as well. It was finally attributed to hypothyroidism, but even with the levothyroxine I now use, my hands (esp the right) will swell some days.

Mrs. D no my hands are not like this. The swelling starts just after the knuckle. I have like lumps on my fingers and red and swelling . The numbness some days are fromelbow to end of finger tips all ofmy fingers both hands.

I see the nero surgeon this Tuesday. I wish he did a full emg test..oh well at least he did the left leg, thats the injured leg. No meds are working.I still have numbness in my fingers and feet, and all down the left leg.

Peripheral Neuropathy

I was diagnosed with Diabetes a little over a year ago, and when i began studying it, i learned about peripheral neuropathy. I too have a herniated disk, but did not experience any stabbing pains or numbness from that, that i remember. However, now I am beginning to have stabbing pains all over my body, not just my feet! It was so bad last night that i began a search and found this site and this thread.

My cousin had it for no known reason, so badly she could not put her feet on the ground. I researched natural cures for her and found one listed on *edit*, called "Nerve Support Formula for Relief of Peripheral, Diabetic & Poly Neuropathy Nerve Pain", by WSN. We researched the ingredients, which are all natural, and she made her own tea and did gain great relief. I am considering buying it, if i can find the $$ (it's about $44/mo).

I am reducing my weight and monitoring my blood sugars and taking my meds with rarely a miss. I have lost over 40 pounds in the past year, and hope to continue with that. Ultimately i hope to go off the diabetic meds and reverse the effects which include peripheral neuropathy. Please, wish me well.

Well done! Amazing 40 pounds thats a lot of weight to lose. You most certainly have taken your life back by taking such a control of your health situation. I know you will have the tenacity and strength to get off the medication. You have proved that by slimming down. That must have been so hard at times - especially when you are in pain, you feel like giving up. Hey - you will soon be running a marathon by the sounds of it;). I pray that your PN will soon be gone- lots of reversal stories on here which are sso encouraging. Keep going. Stay strong. Ive sent you a friend link so you can let me know how you get on. ((((((((Big hug))))))))). God bless x

Wow thats awesome the weight loss. I am losing now to. I am on green coffee bean extract.
Got my EMG test back that they did on 1 leg. No abnormalities. So no surgery and he cant fix my hands or feet. What a waste of time. Now I don't know what to do.

cindylou_38 04-20-2013 07:02 AM

Hi Cindylou

I am so sorry you are in such pain. Other than a pain specialist, there is another branch of medicine I recommend, based solely on my own experience.
I too am a pain patient. Physiatrist, is a branch of medicine that is first, for pain. Then they go a step further, and try to treat the whole body on a cellular level. I have PN and it was greatly reduced by seeing this kind of specialist.

I also read about what MrsD said about Angeoedema. I too have had this, and what triggers it remains a mystery for me. In my case, it wasn't pain, but big red swollen patches on parts of my body. The worst was my lips, eyes, tongue, and face. The hospital said it was probably do to an alergic reaction. The swelling didn't feel good, but it wasn't like PN or RSD, or joint pain. It was treated with a number of IV's and it went away withing a few hours. Your doctor would know at once if you had this. No EMG is needed for this DX,

I hope you get some relief soon. Dealing with pain is awful and we all need support to get through it. Thats why I came to neruo talk too.

I am here any time to talk . ginnie

cindylou_38 04-26-2013 06:53 AM

Maybe I will book another appointment with Physiatrist. Its bee a long time since I say him.:)
