Is it normal to relapse on symptoms for no reason?

I'm about 3 months PCS and I have been doing great this past week. Barely any symptoms other than minor grogginess and feeling a little off. No headaches or foggy thinking or anything like that. Then all of a sudden today I am extremely groggy and got a bit anxious earlier for absolutely no reason. I got 10 hours of sleep last night and did not over-exert myself recently. Is this normal to relapse on some symptoms for no reason? I'm very frustrated because I felt like I was making great progress and now I'm heading back into the wrong direction

Too much sleep? Something else?

There may be some reason that you relapsed and you're just not aware of what it is. Can you describe your last 24 hours? Otherwise, too much sleep would be bad for me. Between 7 and 8 hours was all I needed. MorE than that could make me have a migraIne or make me lethargic.

Nothing out of the ordinary. I went to my parents house after work and helped my sister e-file her taxes on-line. Then just watched some baseball on TV and went home and went to bed. Slept about 10 hours. Woke up, felt okay. Made my breakfast smoothie, drank a cup of coffee, took a shower, and got ready to go out for lunch. Starting feeling groggy as heck while getting ready. Then when I was in Costco I got extremely dizzy to the point I felt like I was going to pass out. I had extreme fatigue all day. Still tired. I had to bail on going out with my one buddy tonight because I just felt I needed to rest.

Any recent changes in meds?

Twice, I've had symptoms as the result of a change in my mEdicine. Topamax made me have facial twitches and mood swings. Too much Adderall made me lightheaded and pass out. Just making sure a medication wasn't at fault!

Costco could cause a relapse! Lights, noise, movement, lots of visual stimulation, moving head from side to side. I can go now...but it still it tough.
I would take it easy because you can still have neurochemical changes 3 months after hurting your brain. I had a good few weeks after two 1/2 months, and then a full force wham of symptoms....and the rest is history (i.e still suffering!). Rest.

My biggest triggers are grocery stores

I agree that Costco may have been the trigger. I can be having a good day but if I go to a grocery store it almost always ruins it. Too much stimuli. And I'm at 6 months pcs.

Dear Mokey,

I've noticed that you've been taking Reversatol. What are your experiences with it?

Thank you

Yes, I think Costco definitely made everything worse. I remember I just wanted to get out of there. I even felt a little anxiety in there, like I just wanted to leave. I am claustrophobic too and it was crowded that day.

I do have another question for those of you who have recovered. I have not had a headache in over a week now. I believed this to be a great step in my recovery. I have NEVER went a week since my concussion without a headache. Is no more headaches a sign that I am on the towards the end of my recovery? I still feel a little off and I do get irritable easily, but I feel better overall. Anyone have a similar type recovery where the headaches stopped but still was not 100%?

A week without a symptom is meaningless as far as recovery goes. A few weeks without a symptom can start to mean something. These symptoms or lack of them are just trends. The longer a trend, the more it means. A week means very little except that you are learning to minimize stressors that cause head aches. Good for you.

bluehiroko,

If you are going to try all of these different substances, you need to add one at a time. Wait a few weeks to see if there is a difference then add another substance.

Did you read my review of your regimen ? It is my "let's discuss nutrition..." thread.

Congratulations on losing your headaches! I say it's a really great sign and evidence you are moving more swiftly toward recovery now, but that doesn't mean you are at the finish line. Keep taking good care of yourself and ease up your activity levels slooooowly. Keep listening to what your body is telling you. Don't ignore that voice telling you you are doing too much.

Thanks this is great advice. My problem before was that I was getting too physical too fast (going back to weightlifting right after I felt better). I stopped all physical activity other than light walking for short periods of time. I just hope that I can keep getting better. I feel better everyday, but I still feel a little off. At times the brain fog is worse, but overall I feel I'm heading in the right direction. Hopefully I can keep this up! :)

Nice to hear that you are getting better. I think when you are getting better on a daily basis rather than going from week to week with slight improvement, then you are getting there. I too feel that I am getting better every day, this is a great sign!
