MS and Protandim

I started on Protandim, an herbal supplement, and had a relapse. They tell me it is a detox and I need to stay on the pill and 1/2 only. Anyone use Protandim. Any results. Sure would like to know. Thanks.

SallyC 04-19-2013 06:22 PM

No never heard of it. Sorry..:)

Kitty 04-19-2013 06:31 PM

Never heard of it, either. And who is the "they" that are telling you how to take it?

mrsD 04-19-2013 06:41 PM

If something is not working for you or you suspect it of enabling
a relapse, you should seriously consider not taking it anymore.

ProTandim is expensive, and advertised as a "miracle". If you don't see that then stop taking it. I surely wouldn't continue it if it were me. They charge quite a bit for herbs sold singly that would cost much less, IMO.
Oh, and I see Donny Osmond has replaced Montel as their spokesperson? I wonder how much they pay him?

This is something else to consider:

Voluntary Recall

In December 2012, LifeVantage issued a voluntary recall of select lots (10 in total) of Protandim due to potential health risks arising from the possible inclusion of small metal fragments in the final product.[20] In February 2013, the company announced that it was extending the recall to include additional lots of the product, estimating the total cost of the recall at $5.9 million.[21]

I was on Protandim for a few months. The research seemed fairly promising and I figured it couldn't hurt! I did a great job taking it for the first month or so and didn't see or feel much of a difference. The last two I just wasn't consistent enough with taking it, so I stopped the shipments. I know that wasn't particularly helpful, but I figured I'd share haha.

Protandim and MS

I am still in a relapse and although getting better, I am not as good as I was. I wanted so badly for this pill to give me more energy but not working. I'm done with it. I'd caution people with MS to be careful. Just because of my problems. I know people say it's great, but not for me.

NIH Article on Using Dietary Supplements Wisely

http://nccam.nih.gov/health/supplements/wiseuse.htm
Quote:

Key Points
Dietary supplements contain a variety of ingredients, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs or other botanicals. Research has confirmed health benefits of some dietary supplements but not others.
To use dietary supplements safely, read and follow the label instructions, and recognize that “natural” does not always mean “safe.” Be aware that an herbal supplement may contain dozens of compounds and that all of its ingredients may not be known.
Some dietary supplements may interact with medications or pose risks if you have medical problems or are going to have surgery. Most dietary supplements have not been tested in pregnant women, nursing mothers, or children.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates dietary supplements, but the regulations for dietary supplements are different and less strict than those for prescription or over-the-counter drugs.
Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health approaches you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

I have been taking protandim for 4 months. The only thing I can tell you is my own experiences, I have never seen it advertised as a miracle pill. I am sleeping all night now because of it. My husband can back me up on that. I am post menopausal and was lucky to get 3-4 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night before I started taking protandim. Now I can sleep up to 7-8 hours and for years I never knew what that was like. You can go to Pubmed and research protandim for yourself. I have heard people mention scam but I have never seen a product with so much science and peer reviewed studies behind it. I don't ever want to be without it again.

I have a friend who swears by Protandim - so much so that she is now a rep for them. I looked up the ingredients and decided not to try it as some of the ingredients can cause an adverse reaction with the medicines I take. For me, it just wasn't worth trying.

jackD 05-06-2013 06:51 PM

the real story behind it

I have followed this product(Protandim) development for MANY, MANY, MANY years.

It started life as "Ependymin" and lots of initial hype...

Quote:
SCIENTISTS are to test a miracle drug at Edinburgh University which could help people live to the age of 120.

The new pill is said to slow down the signs of ageing by repairing and
restoring the body's natural defences.

It contains a special protein produced by the brain which stimulates the
body into producing its own disease-fighting enzymes.

Scientists discovered the protein - ependymin - can repair the body's
defences by stimulating it into producing its own anti-oxidant compounds.

Anti-oxidants, which are found naturally in fruit, vegetables and tea, can
combat the damage caused to the body as it ages - but only if taken in huge
quantities.

Now researchers claim the new pill has the equivalent effect of eating 30lb
of fruit and vegetables every single day.

Its US-based creator, pharmaceutical giant CereMedix, says it will boost
average life expectancy from 75 years to 120 years.

Company president Steve Parkinson revealed the first clinical trials of the
drug were planned to be held in Edinburgh University next year.

"All we have to do is prove that it is safe to swallow. As it is just a
sympathetic replica of a natural substance found in the brain, we don't see
that as being an obstacle."

The trials are expected to test the drug on patients with lung disease to
see if it can repair the damage caused by smoking.

Professor Bill Magee, who is based at the university, said the drug could
have a huge effect on the treatment of diseases such as Alzheimer's and with
strokes, which are caused by oxidative stress
There was only one problem, make that ONE BIG PROBLEM.

It also helped abnormal cells grow VERY fast. A Very bad thing if you have cancer.

This whole thing was based upon a Masters Thesis.

http://www.wpi.edu/Pubs/ETD/Availabl...528103-102730/ (URL NO LONGER WORKS)

The bottom line is that they had to get something on the market.

They found a good researcher that said that he could put together a combination of supplements that would do "almost" the same thing.

Thus we got Protandim and all the sales folks were happy.

Here is how THEY presented it...

Quote:
How was Protandim discovered?

Protandim is the result of some breakthrough, "out of the box"
thinking. Lifeline was initially formed to license a synthetic peptide
that we believed might have some effect on the body's antioxidant
defense system.

*** After further research we had some great concerns about the
peptide,***

but it sensitized us to the key things that we needed to search for in
a solution. We wanted to find a natural alternative. Months of
extensive in-house research was spearheaded by one of our principals.
We poured through countless scientific studies and abstracts, looking
for the specific indicators we were interested in - things that may
have only been listed as an "aside" in the observations of studies
addressing other things. Soon, we developed the concept parameters and
initial formulation..."

I'm been dealing with MS over 15 years. In December 2012 I was having new issues with my vision and walking. However no brain activity of new lesions. Only MS acting up. They prescribed Ampyra to improve my walking and steroid for my vision issue. I was improving but in March 25 2013 I started taking protandim, in two days I discontinued the amantadine medication for the fatigue caused by the Ampyra. April 10, I stopped the Ampyra and the medication for high blood pressure " nadolol". Since that day,my blood pressure is normal and I'm stronger than ever. My pain is 50% less. My neurologist is surprised with my improvements. She will follow up next month to see how Protandim is working on me. 100% natural. Love it!!!

Protandim tested in study funded by BG12 maker

My first post here on NeuroTalk so I just learned I can't post the link but I'll guide you to it below. Maybe this will help some understand more about this product and its science. I have been studying Oxidative Stress for 5 years since ERW greatly helped my daughters seizures, Autism, Speech etc. ERW in some med reports was likened to "having SOD like properties", SOD presumably the most potent of Endogenous Antioxidants. I then looked into Protandim an NRF2 activating, herbal supplement for my daughter as well.

NRF2 Activation is a cutting edge new field many bio pharma's are now into. Oxidative Stress is a major contributing factor in many neuro-degenerative diseases, Parkinsons, ALS Autism and Epilepsy to name a few.

In regard to MS I have no experience other than knowing that ROS / Oxidative Stress is out of control. I have heard some say they don't realize how much it helps them... until they stop it.

Protandim proved to be more effective in MS outbreak controls than 3 major big Pharma drugs in a study that appears to have been funded by one of the 3 drug companies. . *edit*

I can say it helped my daughter's cognitive issues and really helped my arthritis. I hope this info helps. Pat D

Protandim ingredients

The following is a list of Protandim ingredients:
Proprietary Blend 675 mg:

•Milk thistle extract (Silybum marianum) (seed)[225 mg]
•Bacopa extract (Bacopa monnieri) (aerial part)[150 mg]
•Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) (root)[150 mg]
•Green tea extract (Camellia sinensis) (leaf)[75 mg]
•Turmeric extract (Curcuma longa) (rhizome)[75 mg]

I believe All these help increase SOD levels.

jackD

p.s. These quantities of the supplements seem a little weak!!! Cheat and get more of most from other sources!!

bettycas, could you give us an update on your current use and experience with Protandim? You started to take it back in 2013. I would value this information so much

I am on Protandim

and here is my story:
Today I am grateful for my health. Strange I know, considering that I have progressive Multiple Sclerosis and Fibromyalgia. I have suffered with MS for several years now, with symptoms ranging from memory loss, inability to walk or talk, significant vision loss, bladder issues, skin issues, numbness of limbs, sleep trouble, all super fun stuff.
Nearly 4 weeks ago I was introduced to an all natural supplement that contains a blend of just 5 herbs, backed by 6 patents, and 16 peer reviews studies with an FDA approved statement " clinically proven to reduce your oxidative stress/inflammation by an average of 40% in 30 days"
I have been taking just 1 pill a day every day for the last 3 1/2 weeks as opposed to the 20 plus pills that a medical doctor prescribed to me and the 20 plus vitamins and supplements I was also taking.
Today I am happy to report that not only have I given up all other medications, including sleeping pills and ibuprofen, I am thinking clearly, speaking clearing (without forgetting my words), My vision (especially my peripheral vision which was completely gone) is returning, my mood has lifted (no longer feeling hopeless), and I have no pain (including the debilitating headaches I was suffering with).
There are no words to explain the joy I feel or how hopeful I have become. Hearing that you will not be able to see your children grow, that will not be able to do the things you love to do anymore, that you will need to leave the work force and that you will have to be taken care of 24 hours a day is a huge blow to a 36 year old mother of 3 special needs children. This one little pill has changed my life and the lives of my family and I simply couldn't be more thankful or grateful.
