Tell me about dropping things

So, I have asked a few questions the last day or so as I am trying to understand what is going on with my body.

Someone in another post had mentioned on of their first MS symptoms was dropping things.

This made me remember something. Maybe 8 years ago, I remember just a few times in this one year I would be holding something, and then as if my brain couldn't multitask, it would just let go of the object, and it would fall to the floor.

There was NO weakness. Just literally my hand would just..let go.

Never had this since then.

My Qs are:

1. Anyone ever drop things like this. No weakness. Just letting go? Is this an MS symptom??

2. Have u had this only to have it go away??

Thanks everyone!!

I have dropped things off and on for years.

My husband, who has carpel tunnel with ulnar nerve involvement also drops things.

I've had the dropping things SX, as far back as I can remember. It
has some to do with weakness, it's more to do with coordination
and messed up signals in the CNS.

Although it's worse on some days and not so bad on others, it
never really goes away.

nine years ago, I was working as a server and would drop glass syrup containers just as you describe...my hand just let go. My boss would cringe, and I'd apologize...
It happens more regularly now, especially since all of my fingertips have fallen permanently asleep:(

It's strange I had this and it hasn't been back since. Does that happen?

There is no rhyme or reason with MS. Symptoms come and go as they please. Seems like the really annoying ones stay longer but I guess it just seems that way because they're SO annoying.

I am 6' 2" tall and was around 225 - 230 pounds when this hit. A weight lifter most of my life, involved in physical labor and had no issues holding heavy items.

I broke every glass glass in the house and started on the coffee cups, one second I had them the next they hit the floor.

I got tired of trying to thread my way thru sharp objects to get to a broom and mop and now drink everything in a plastic cup or travel coffee mug with a lid that doesn't pop off if it hits the floor.

I even dropped me! :D but I am more aware of the issues now and realize I have to concentrate to accomplish certain tasks I could do without much thought in the past?

Did come and go in the past, but as my fingertips lose more of their sensation, I seem to just drop things more often:(

My dropitis has waxed and waned. There was a period 18 years ago when I seemed to drop everything. Then I got more conscious of the problem and did things more slowly and carefully. Ever since, I've been slower and more careful. Occasionally I do drop things just as you describe, without a warning of weakness. But it's fairly rare now. If, as you say, I tried to multitask and do things fast, I'd have more things on the floor.

Yep - dropping things is one of my party tricks too, although I am not doing it as much recently (touch wood) - my last effort was a delightful glass of Shiraz on my new beige carpet (before you ask, it was for my husband not me, so that wasn't the reason).

My left hand just seems to release and I lost whatever I am holding - by the same account, when I have a fall, it usually seems that my left leg just folds and the rest of me follows. No rhyme or reason.

Yes, me too with the droppin or letting go of things. It happens more when the hands are tingling or completely numb. I also have strong jerks that happen in my arm and hand on occasion, which can launch whatever is in my hand across a room.

Hope that you get some answers as to why this is happening to you.

With love, Erika

Thanks everyone for your replies.

It's so hard to know if mine is an actual symptom or not.

I can still remember it happened..maybe 5 times in just this one 6month period and that was it and then once a few years ago. Each time it happened I'd think "did that really just happen?" It's really odd. I second guess myself. It's just so bizarre.

Ughh......I do this, too. Drives me crazy. I especially worry about this symptom whenever I have grandchildren. I'll be afraid to hold them for fear of dropping them!

I know Kell, I make sure that I'm sitting down, when holding
a baby. ~Stinks!!~

Could be an MS symptom; or maybe not. As Snoopy said, her husband drops things due to CTS.

When I drop things it's not so much "letting go" as it is an unoticed lessening in grip. My hand doesn't open on it's own.

Yeah. It's hard to remember exactly how it happened those years go. But i would be, say, in the kitchen holding a cup. The phone would ring and while talking on it my other hand would drop the cup. Or I'd just be standing there holding it and say reading a book and my hand would just let go.

It was like my brain would forget I was holding it. My hand didn't open up either. It just would be in my hand...then on the floor. it just seemed my hand forgot it was holding something.

Kitty 07-12-2013 12:57 PM

I tend to hold thing really tightly because of this. I use plastic cups to drink from and only certain coffee cups with a very specific type of handle.

Kitty, doing this keeps me hyperaware that I am holding something...just like lifting my foot-sometimes I have to really concentrate to avoid dragging the front of my foot and tripping:( Stupid MS..

Erika 07-12-2013 09:27 PM

The dropping things is not too big of a deal for me, as I'm careful and use two hands, along with two eyes when holding something that will make a mess (or get hurt) if dropped.
The jerking hand thingy, now that is mostly why I don't eat out or dine with others, or sit too closely beside anyone. It seems to be more likely to happen when I'm just resting my hand/arm, but the sweep can be pretty wide and no one likes to get a back-hander while dining or from a stranger while sitting in a waiting room. It also happens when I rest my hand on a computer mouse for too long. The 3rd finger insists on hitting the right click button when the hand is left resting there as well.

Stupid disease.

With love, Erika

Lynn 07-12-2013 10:06 PM

So Erika

Remind me not to sit next to you at dinner! :)

Erika 07-13-2013 06:57 AM

The initiated have learned to keep their distance...except Willy the dog...anything that falls on the floor is legally his :D.

With love, Erika
