Dairy?
Greetings all,
I'm wondering if any of you have gone off all dairy products and what was your response with MS symptoms? I'm really missing ice cream, cow milk for cereal and some baked goods. I'm wondering if it is work it and people with MS thoughts on this issue from your experiences? Thank you all |
I went off all dairy for about 5 years for digestive reasons, which did help that. It didn't change a darn thing with respect to the MS though as I had 2 or 3 flares during that time.
Now I only use a bit of cream in my coffee and the occasional serving of yogurt because I found that being off it for so long, made my system no longer able to tolerate dairy. I've heard of similar experiences from others who have eliminated it for a while and then tried to resume eating it (be forewarned). Hope that it helps you if that is your intention. With love, Erika |
I don't understand the big push to cut cows milk products from
your diet? Everything we eat or drink, is bad for us, if we have too much of it. But milk has always been one of the important parts of our diet. Sure, if you are allergic to it, stay away from it, just as you would, peanuts. Cut down if you are over-consuming, but cutting it out entirely, IMHO. is counter-productive to our good health. Personally, I hated milk as a kid, unless they put chocolate in it.:D. Never drank it. Wasn't too crazy about cheese either. Still don't drink it, don't eat cereal...etc..., but I loves my ice cream/frozen yogurt. I use all skim milk products now... even cheese. Am I completely wrong? |
No, you're not wrong, Sally. I'm the exact same way you are.....never liked milk (only chocolate) and never drank it. I do eat dairy products now but only in very limited amounts. I think anything is excess is not good for us. Even an excessive amount of non-dairy or soy milk products can cause problems.

I agree, unless one is allergic to either the casein protein or the lactose contained in dairy products, it is probably not a problem to consume it. Even for those who are not allergic, dairy products can cause problems for some folks...and theses dairy products are usually the unfermented variety of dairy, as in plain milk (lactose intact). Althought milk is not a necessary part of the adult human diet, it does offer high protein, vitamins and minerals. Most people do OK with reasonable amounts of yogurt, butter milk and cheeses (lactose has been broken down by bacteria).

I love milk!!! But, I had to stop drinking it several years ago. I still have some in my cereal or coffee but I can't drink a whole glass of milk.
Since I stopped drinking milk before I was diagnosed with MS. I still have yogurt but the low fat or non-fat kinds. There are certain brands of yogurt I can tolerate better than others. I took a vacation from yogurt for a while and didn't experience any change in MS symptoms. Based on my own experiences, I don't think dairy products have any effect on MS. If you have GI issues, I can see how dairy would effect those issues. |
I admit I don't drink much milk, but I do use Kefir in the occasional smoothie and I try to eat greek yogurt at least every other day.
I do like cheese, but I am trying to cut down on it...just too much fat for my fat gut;) |
I thought I responded with a big "Thank you" be see I didn't send it. Thank you all for your thoughts on this.

Did we talk you back into having a little milk DOc, or are you allergic? :)

Have you thought of using the almond milk?

I am fine with milk and with wheat. I follow the Swank diet and skim milk and grains are important on that diet, unless one is actually allergic or sensitive to these products. I think skim milk is an important part of low fat protein, and it is also low salt. But I don't overdo it. I felt terrible, in really great pain, when I tried to cut out gluten grains. I actually needed these grains for fiber, I think. There is no reason to cut these things out unless you really have a sensitivity to them. I do not. I have MANY sensitivities, so it's good I can eat some things like this without a problem.

My wife tells me everything she reads, scientific literature says "do not eat dairy." I ate ice cream last week and I was fine.
|
Scientific literature also used to say that "the earth is flat" :D.
I'd listen to your body on the dairy...and especially to your stomach when it comes to ice cream (It would be a shame to give up such a Yummy treat for no reason). With love, Erika |
