UK storm coming in....

Hi everyone,

I'm here in England waiting for this massive storm to come in. We're in Gloucestershire, and apparently it's heading right for us - a massive low pressure system, obviously it's completely playing havoc with my CRPS symptoms tonight, particularly my wrist, hand and arm...

Just wanted to wish any other Brits good luck for tonight, particularly if you live in the south like me! Here's hoping its not as bad as they're forecasting!

Sleep might be in short supply tonight as the winds get up and the rain lashes down...

Bram.

Nanc 10-27-2013 05:18 PM

Hey Bram!

I sure hope the storm is not so bad for you. Sorry the pressure is playing havoc on you. Weather where I am is pretty good right now, really cold in the mornings, but I am inside so I am ok with it at this time. I am hoping it stays that way for a while! I am having enough issues with this, I don't need weather changes to aggravate things.

Hope you make it thru ok.

Nanc

I hope everyone in the UK gets through the storm as well as can be expected.

I am still in the US. I'll be coming home later in a few days.

Hang in there everyone.

:grouphug:

SloRian 10-28-2013 12:04 AM

Batten down the hatches! I hope the storm comes in a lot calmer than expected, and only gives you enough rain to sleep well by :)

Brambledog 10-28-2013 03:31 AM

I slept ok in the end thankfully, and the worst of the storm only missed us by about ten miles! It was pretty bad in lots of areas, so I'm glad we were lucky - my youngest is disappointed though! :D

Take care everyone, and have a good day x

Bram.

Lol, we are in the interesting position of being at the top of one region (the south west) and the bottom edge of another (the midlands). According to the met office, Gloucestershire is in the south-west...:winky:

Nowt seems to have happened in a lot of places, for which I'm very glad! The areas that were affected have seen a fair amount of damage. I'm very glad not to have been one of those 220,000 homes without power today!

Good luck with the storm coming in Bram. I hope you'll be okay. My thoughts are with you.

It seems to have passed us by here in North East Derbyshire. It was sad to hear about the people who lost their lives.
I am rather new to this forum. Have you any idea which section I should be looking at. I have developed a problem with my eyes.

Hey Bram,

I had been watching the news and thinking about you and this storm. Hurricane winds, yikes! It sounds like the worst is behind you now. So glad you're okay hon! Sorry I'm so late on this.

Brambledog 11-03-2013 06:58 AM

Lol Vrae! :D

Thanks for finding this at all! Yes we're fine thanks, we just missed it...

Take care yourself chick

Hey Bram
Now that is a storm:winky:

At least two people have died as one of the most powerful typhoons on record slams into the Philippines, with wind gusts up to 235mph

gus

Brambledog 11-08-2013 04:14 AM

I know gus, it's horrific. Makes you realise how lucky we in the UK are to live in an area of the world where although the weather is chaotic, it is very rarely life-threatening. Those poor people in the Phillipines were so lucky to escape with their lives, and will probably lose so much of what they had - home, possessions and livelihood.

I've been thinking of them. I can't imagine winds of 235mph. I remember that video of three people on the streets in Denmark being blown over by winds at least half that...it's incredible anyone survived at all in the Phillipines.

Bram.

RSD ME 11-08-2013 04:23 AM

Hi Bram and Gus, I can't sleep so I thought I'd just say hi. That is an awful storm. I feel so bad for those people in the Phillipines. I hope no one else dies from it. Well I hope you have better weather by you and have a better day. Take care.

Brambledog 11-08-2013 05:10 AM

Hey Renee :) I hope you get to sleep soon.... I'm sending you some Zzzzz's.....

You know what, it never ceases to amaze me how other countries cope with bad weather and how here in the UK every time something unusual happens everything goes into meltdown.
Wettest country in Europe yet every year hose pipe banns
10cm of snow and ice traffic grid lock
Strong winds and rail disruptions for days.
Why can't we cope with bad weather?
Okay ignore me I am wondering when I will get back my normal sight:)

Brambledog 11-08-2013 11:23 AM

I know gus! :D

It's so embarrassing - I always think everyone on the continent and Scandinavian countries must be in hysterics at us every winter, the way we shut down in panic at a bit of ice and snow! When I was a kid we got snowed in every winter for at least two weeks, and people coped much better. I blame this suing culture we have now...

To be fair, that storm was pretty destructive in the end down in the south, it was just weird how it affected such a small area of the country. The trouble is that the UK has some of the most chaotic and least predictable weather patterns anywhere on the globe, and it could have been worse than it was. Our weather men can't win now - if they warn us of bad weather and it doesn't happen, we all get angry, and if they don't warn us and something hits us, we go mad. Lol.

Hope you're feeling better now. Have a good day :)

Bram.

Brambledog 12-23-2013 08:09 AM

Just wanted to say I hope any UK folk here stay safe and dry in these nasty storms we've got coming in over Christmas week... The river here is very high, and the ground completely saturated, and I know there will be a lot of nervous households over the next few days. Flooding always happens in winter, but it's particularly harsh to have the threat of it over Christmas itself  We are lucky to be on a bit of a hill, but there is a lot of low ground in this area.

Take care and tie outside things down! I know our storms are pretty small compared to the likes of the Phillipines storm recently, but they can still cause a lot of problems...

Good luck and Happy Christmas!

Bram.

RSD ME 12-23-2013 09:35 AM

Good luck with the storm Bram. We are just getting some flurries here for Christmas. The weather during the last few days has been pretty mild, but it's supposed to get colder again later in the week. I hope the storm doesn't head your way and takes a detour instead. Try to stay warm and have that heating pad handy for possible rsd flares because of weather changes. Take care my friend.

Bram good luck with the weather praying for you. Actually just did. You have helped so many with your kind words. Wishing you the best. Getting ready for my home therapy which includes scrubbing the floor with a brush with my bad hand!!!!

Brambledog 12-26-2013 06:21 PM

Another one hotting up outside now.....the wind is really rising fast.... It's been one storm after another recently. The river near us is really high and has burst its banks now, the water is close to coming over the road nearby (luckily we are safely on a bit of a hill). More rain now is the last thing a lot of folk will be wanting, and I feel so sorry for all those who have had their Christmas completely ruined by the weather in one way or another....

Losing our power on Christmas afternoon really brought it home to us how awful it must be to have no power for days on end. No heat, no lights, basic cooking at best, no hot water... I know many folk in the world are dealing with far worse, but it makes you think how much we all rely on this complex energy system, and how little it takes for everything to just break down.

Take care again UK folk, and good luck if you're getting these high winds tonight.

Bram.

Lottie 12-26-2013 08:02 PM

Stay safe everyone in the UK. Sorry to hear you are dealing with so much stormy weather. If you have a fireplace, keep it blazing!

Brambledog 12-27-2013 03:21 AM

Lol Lottie, I love my fireplace :D cosy cosy thing... We've shut the back plate to reduce draughts last night (we'd been out all day so it wasn't lit), but my chimney is still making mournful comedy noises with all this wind!

I have been totally lacking on posting and I am tonight at some crazy 3 a.m. hour getting caught up on everyone. Gosh I love insomnia! Anywho, how are things now Bram? Are things settling down now and all cylinders firing? I sure hope that you, your property and everything / everyone else is all okay. Gosh, sounds like the rains we had here this fall. It can be quite frightening.... and on Christmas no less.. ugh!

Brambledog 12-30-2013 07:27 AM

Helloooooooo Vrae :)

Sorry you're up at such a bizarre time of the night girl, hope you got some sleep in the end! Hope it's not been too bad CRPS-wise for you to be up and posting at that hour...

I'm ok thanks, we're just having one storm after another this last couple of weeks, and all the ground is just waterlogged. There's nowhere else for the rain to go, so the river levels just keep rising. It's been really odd - we have one storm with high winds and rain, then a couple of quiet days with clear blue skies and cold weather, and then another storm comes in. It's getting a bit old! We're lucky to be up on a hill, so we won't be flooded unless its the end of the world type flooding

I wouldn't say all cylinders are firing lol, but I'm doing ok :winky:

Bram.

LOL... sorry, now that I think about it, I guess that was a bad term to have used but I was thinking the electricity and such in your home when I said "all cylinders are firing". :) Well, at least you're at the top of a hill. End of the world type flooding... I sure hope not too, but should that come to pass, make friends with people who have boats... quick! Hi, you have a boat and you're my new best friend!

All kidding aside, the weather has been really, really weird here too. Subarctic one day and near 60 (omg in Dec? in Denver?) degrees the next. I feel for those on the east coast here as many have been without electricity for many days due to ice storms and unrelenting cold.

Thanks for asking, but no, my insomnia was because my husband made these delish cappuccinos, and I had two late in the evening. What the hell was I thinking?!

Lottie 12-31-2013 12:03 AM

Hi Bram, sounds like crummy weather. I hate cold rain, that is the worst for my symptoms. Does your region get snow? We got about 4 inches recently but its gone already.

Brambledog 12-31-2013 06:05 AM

Morning' Lottie :)

We don't really do proper snow in the UK now :D. The deep, dig-out-of-the-door, can't drive in it, can't shop without a sledge snows of my childhood winters seem to have disappeared from the south where I am...good old global warming (not good at all). What we are good at is mild, wet, windy, miserable, can't-plan-anything weather lol. That's what we have going on at the moment...not freezing cold, but unpredictable, mild, and wet, with the barometer going up and down like a pea in a glass of water :winky: and of course the floods we are getting very good at. I live in a very low area near a river, and quite often at the moment we have a small sea around us!

Crummy weather is an absolutely perfect definition :) in fact I'll contact the Met Office and suggest they redefine our climate in general as 'crummy'. Haha.

Bram.

Brambledog 02-07-2014 05:16 AM

I am so tired of this now. We are between storms this afternoon, with another due this evening, and a biggie over the weekend. Where I am nearly all the green fields around us are under an inland sea since Christmas, everything is just soaked through. We have standing water on our patio where the ground beneath just can't take any more water.... There is so much real misery out there, and communities in much of the country who have been under water for weeks. Farmland that will take years to recover, crops and livelihoods lost, and countless thousands of wild creatures drowned and starving. It's horrible. We might not get the visually impressive weather like tornadoes, but when it comes to miserable weather we can really go some. We've never had a run of storms like this, one after the other for weeks on end. Sea walls built of granite three hundred years ago have been punched through and scattered like pebbles.

The pain is just up and down all the time. It is the air pressure changes that cause the worst of the pain and symptoms for me, and at the moment the weather here is like a roller coaster and has been for weeks. My tolerance to it is just getting less by the day. This morning we are between two big low pressure systems, the skies have cleared in a bizarre taunting move, and the sun is out. The air pressure has risen for a while. And I hurt. I hurt everywhere. My hips and my calves, my back, my shoulder, my side, my knee, my thigh, my feet, my ankle. My skin burns. Last night I had a strange new repeating muscle spasm in the left side of my back that made me jump and arch my back. Good grief. I feel like I need three days solid sleep...

I dread this evening. The pressure will plummet again, and my spirits with it. I mean FFS when will this end? :(

Sorry to moan on.

Bram.

Nanc 02-07-2014 01:23 PM

Don't apologize for moaning Bram, seriously you have every right to moan all you want. And we will be here for you to listen! That weather you are having does sound horrible. Is it supposed to continue for a while? We keep having weather changes, but not so much rain. It is warm one day and freezing (and snowing) the next. We have had several systems coming in this next week. It is nice, sunny and warmer today and messy stuff is coming this weekend and most of next week. I think this is one thing that is not helping me too much!

My niece's baby shower is Sunday and I hope that I am in better shape there then than I am now. It is gonna be at my mom's house and I ordered the gifts online an had them shipped to my mom so we wouldn't have to transport them.

I am so frustrated too Bram. Hope your weather and pain lightens up soon!

Nanc

Brambledog 02-07-2014 02:18 PM

Thanks Nanc :)

The storms aren't due to let up any time soon - we are getting all these storms coming off the US east coast, they are then travelling across the Atlantic and picking up lots of warm moisture, then dumping it on us in a big swirl of high winds and heavy rain....such fun. Not.

Good idea to order the baby shower gifts online and have them delivery there - very wise :winky: Hope you're feeling a lot better then and can really enjoy it rather than just enduring a social occasion. It's always horrible when your smile is stuck on for the benefit of those around you, rather than coming from your heart.

I've just got back from work, and I'm so glad I managed to go. I was tempted to cancel but didn't, and had a really nice session and a bit of a laugh too. Always cheers me up a bit. I warned her I was having a bad pain day and she was really nice about it. Bless. I love my job. Once I'm there lol.

Leg is going mad now though, got the bee stings thing going on. I had a quick five minute game of ping pong with my lovely understanding husband (he came back, phew) which always cheers me a bit, but tonight I think I will pay. Sigh.

Thanks so much Nanc.

Bram

AZ-Di 02-07-2014 02:33 PM

Oh Bram,
Don't apologize for moaning especially because you're always here for
us too!
I had no idea of what is happening there. That all sounds so devastating!
The low pressure along with all that humidity would just amp up all the
pain. Then add in all the worries over flooding, you poor thing.
I hope you can rest and try to get some dry heat.
We'll be thinking of you

Brambledog 02-07-2014 03:01 PM

Thanks Di :)

We are lucky to be on a hill so we won't flood in a direct way unless the patio fills up again like it did in 2007, and even then it didn't come in the house, just the garage... I just feel so sorry for the countryside. It's one thing after another for them, and so many British farmers are living on a knife edge anyway. And the poor animals :( so many dead creatures in the flood water.

No let up for at least the next couple of weeks. One storm tonight, more rain than anything else, and another really bad one over Saturday afternoon with high winds and even more rain. The floods here have been rising again through today after last night's rain, then we've had this bizarrely nice sunny spring day today, then it's due to start chucking it down again in about an hour. What a miserable winter we're having!

I'm a right mopey muppet tonight lol . Ouch, ouch and thrice ouch.

The water will go one day and all will be well. Fingers crossed.

Bram.

anon6715 02-07-2014 04:37 PM

Bram, I'm sorry you are having such a hard time. I keep telling myself that spring is just around the corner. And I have a box of Celebrations, which helps. :)

Brambledog 02-07-2014 05:16 PM

Chocolate always helps Kim :) I've destroyed a large bag this evening...

I held it together until the children went to bed and then just fell apart and blubbed all over my husband's shoulder. Bad evening.

Thanks and hope you're doing ok yourself.

Bram.

anon6715 02-07-2014 05:26 PM

I had physio this morning, then went straight to work, so I'm pretty shattered and extra-burny.

I'm contemplating ridin' the tram tonight (or, as normal people call it, taking a tramadol).

Brambledog 02-12-2014 06:08 AM

I just have to wish everyone well out there in the sodden and storm-battered UK, from Cornwall to the Shetlands....

Winds are due to hit 100 mph in some areas, horrific rain (a months worth in the next 3 days) and the floods just spread and spread. A force 12 gale is forecast for the Irish Sea. Even the coast guards were shocked at that.

There is a lot of misery out there. If you're in the UK, good luck and I hope you are (and stay) dry and warm. If you're in the US or anywhere else, and think we're making a fuss about it all ;) then have a look at the BBC News or the recently posted YouTube videos of parts of the UK.

The Thames Valley is seeing unprecedented flooding. Cornwall and the south west are battered and broken, with storm force winds again today and enormous seas. The Welsh coast is going to suffer again after massive damage to towns like Aberystwyth. The Severn valley through the Severn Estuary all the way through Gloucester, Tewkesbury, Worcester and up to Shrewsbury are having a very wet and tough time of it. The waters are rising in my town :(

I'm lucky to be on a hillside and no flood water can get to us, but I know plenty who have the sandbags out, and roads nearby are becoming blocked by water again. It's just awful. The wind is rising fast here, possibly up to 80mph. Yikes.

Needless to say, all of this wet and wind, and the huge low pressure system that brings it, are playing havoc with all my CRPS symptoms. Such a miserable time.

Take care everyone, and stay safe.

Bram.

Vrae 02-12-2014 09:46 AM

Hey Bram! I did hear about the epic rain and flooding the UK is having on NPR news yesterday. A woman there in the UK was saying that it's flooding on the opposite side of flood plane areas... weird. Gosh, we've had our share of weather too. Massive flooding last summer that we're still dealing with damages, fires, brutal Arctic cold this winter, and what has seemed like daily snow and gloom. One more weather system and my life will be complete!
It friggin HURTS!!! Weeks and weeks of pain, flares and spasms.

I'm so sorry for all that you guys are having to endure! Hang in there! Surely all this will pass...surely...right?!

Hi Bram,
I'm in the Smokie Mnts. of western North Carolina (USA) in the middle of a storm called Pax. I'm in the same boat as you with the weather playing havoc on me. My left hand and wrist hurts with sharp pain from the cold just opening the door to let my dog in. She loves the snow!
I've noticed that my pain is worse when the barometric pressure is 30.0 or higher and when the humidity is 60%% or more. When both are in the higher numbers so goes up my pain level. Both feet are very cold and burning too.
I wish you luck my friend...

Brambledog 02-12-2014 04:53 PM

Completely agree Russell - it's that combo of very low pressure and high humidity that really trips the crips-switch... Add in low temperatures and/or high winds, and you're really ramping things up a notch.

I'm just so tired of it all. Could do with a holiday from the whole country tbh! It's lovely usually, but not when it's like this.

Still horrible out there, big gusts and rain. Mmm lovely. Hope you're doing ok yourself tonight, we don't have snow here, just lots of mild very wet weather.

Bram.
