Neurotin

So I've been taking this medication for 2 days now. Yesterday it made me cry a lot and today it made me hyper and I was also laughing hysterically.

I know what these crazy meds can do to people, I've taken antidepressants before and yeah...they make you crazy when you first start taking them. I guess all the meds that are related to the nervous system do the same thing.

No improvement in pain lvl yet...is anyone here currently on it?

Jomar 12-20-2013 11:45 PM

Weekends & Holiday's are usually slow for replies, but you can do a forum search to find past posts about meds ..

Nelly, please do some research on any meds given to u. I've taken neurotin, and I experience the side effects. I was given all types of meds, but they didn't help, and the side effects were horrible. I stay away from doctors meds, take Tylenol for pain. Neurologists always prescribe all types of meds, so be careful. I would stay away from them, because my years of experience with them was not helpful. They didn't know that much about TOS, so they would have u take a bunch of test, and then prescribe more meds. Do research before u take those meds. I hope u feel better.

cyclobenzaprine ( muscle relaxant and It works by blocking nerve impulses ) and ibuprofene together is save and efficient. drowsiness is one of the side effect which is good for us.

I have to give them a try, I can't dismiss them completely. What if they help me? I know people that would not touch antidepressants if their life depended on it, but I still think they are great, I could not have made it out of my depression without them.

I just hope these weird side effects subside in time and I can see some benefits. My doc did not say anything about muscle relaxants. He said all my pain is nerve pain and I guess that's why he gave me these. I will give him a chance before I dismiss anything he prescribes.

Any medicine who whork with CNS ( central nervous system ) usually make a differance, and i say usually. I would say it work with 90% of people. Usually good to help sleeping too. Antidepressant is tricky a bit but usually work as well. Parts of the TOS is neurologic so thats why i think hypnose could work. Waiting for more feedback from you Nellyzen!!!

I think muscle relaxants work on the nervous system as well, right? They are not drugs for the muscle tissue, but drugs for the nerves that stimulate the muscles to tense.

Regarding TOS nerve pain, it's caused by compression that is caused either directly by muscles or by muscles pulling on bones (first rib and collar bone). Anything that can safely reduce that tension is often helpful to TOS.

I do have to warn that if you just kill the pain without relaxing the muscles and/or adjusting the bones, then the irritation to your nerves may continue which could make things worse over time. Sorry if I sound like a downer, but I think it's a real concern and had to share it.

Jomar 12-21-2013 12:49 PM

That is the main concern for me, if the pain is reduced by medication, it isn't fixing anything, just covering up the pain signals.
So if the pain is less then a person may be tempted to return to activities ,with no PT, and possibly end up in a much worse predicament..

But if you are in very high pain and take meds so you can do your therapy & posture and manage daily activities then that is the way to do it.

But meds alone with no physical therapy /self care/alternative care at all is a bad road IMO.

I think the treatment he gave me is somewhat "temporary" until he figures out more about my situation. I have a nerve test on the 6th of Jan and he also wants me to see a neurologist because my legs went numb when he tested me. So I guess after all the gazillion tests I will finally get a more comprehensive plan of attack.

husky601 12-21-2013 08:07 PM

Yes muscle relaxants work on the nervous system but obviously if you don't do any treatment ( what ever what is best for you ) you probably not gonna make your condition beter.

I want to stop Neurontin. I think my lower back pain is related to it as it started after taking it and also today I have a massive panic attack and unbearable muscle pain in entire body. It sucks because it really helps with the hand pain but I can't take the side effects. I've been taking 600 mg a day, my dr hasn't called me back yet. Can I just stop since I only took it for 4 days?

Nellyzen 12-25-2013 04:13 PM

So yep, I stopped and it almost made me lose my mind. Dr called me back and said the next step is Elavil.

Why is nobody mentioning muscle relaxants if they are so useful? Anyways, clearly I need to wait until the 6th and then have a chat with him, about PT also. I don't feel like the exercises I'm doing at home are going to "cure" me.

Hi
I have had NTOS for four yrs now. I have been on Neurontin the whole time. I will admit it wasrough in the beginning getting use to it but without it today I realize I would be in masdive pain. It took about two weeks to get past some side effects and to frel the benefits n relief of pain. I also take cymbalta at beftime. The combination for me works well. I still have my flairs n I am in some pain everyday but I also have other DXs. Just my input for you. Good luck n hang in there with whatever u decide... Hugs...

Hi Nellyzen

Hello, and I hope you are having a good Holiday. Lots of folks have problems with that medication. What I did was keep a record (written) of all the side effects for a month. Then made an appointment to talk to my doctor. I didn't do very well on, as the side effects for me were not worth it, as I didn't get anything in the way of relief. That record will help your doctor tell if this medication is right for you. Wish you all the best. ginnie:grouphug:

Unfortunately I had to stop taking it, the pain in my body was unbearable plus the mental part which was very scary. I will try something else.

I'm glad it's working for some people though. It seems like I had the more rare side effects.

meds

I had a BAD experience with Neurontin - depression, brain fog, worse headaches, passed out (even on a very low dose). I tried this med for about 5 months. It seems to be very popular with doctors as a pain med and although some people don't have horrible side effects, many others do. I also had a similarly bad experience with Lyrica. See:

http://www.askapatient.com/viewratin...name=NEURONTIN

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/114859.php

A low dose of Tramadol helps relieve nerve pain for me, without nasty side effects. But we're each different and Tramadol might not work well for others.

Eight 12-29-2013 12:38 PM

Started taking neurotic again after reading this - nice reminder that it helped. I had the fuzzy thinking , drooling reaction to Lyrica. Other people swear by Lyrica. Dry mouth was rotting my teeth before with neurotic that is why I stopped it. Since u plan on only taking it six months or so to get me through surgery, my teeth will survive.

Nellyzen 12-29-2013 12:56 PM

Neurontin made me suicidal. Never again.

Tos made me suicidal. Never again!?!
