Holiday blues & paybacks

Well, the holidays are over.

THANK GOD.

I over indulged in sugar/carbs soo much. :(

Now the payback. I tried to start over so many times and all the awesome food around made it impossible. I have never been so happy to see the holidays end. I refuse to step on the scale for the next week until I detox, decarb, and exercise for a week first.

Anyone else blow it and looking forward to starting fresh now???

Edit to add: I have to say my feet could be way worse. Yes they are flaring more as a consequence however I still believe the zyflamend has really helped so much and made it easier.

Susanne C. 01-02-2014 10:48 AM

Well, I am also determined to stop eating sweets and carbs. I can't honestly say they affect my pain- hereditary neuropathy is what it is, regardless, but I like my clothes to be loose and let's just say they are fitting rather snugly. What it does to my triglycerides is another story but I ignore that. I baked more than usual this year, and sampled way too much of it. There is a ton of stuff left from last nights party, the young and middle aged adults drank more than they ate and the kids played outside and never came in for food. I tried to send some home, one guest forgot hers, but I am determined not to eat the cakes!
So I am with you in the resolve to eat better starting today! In fact I plan to start with a modified juice fast detox since I have been overdoing it and my activity level will be so low for a while.
Exercise is not an option right now as I am trying to rest as much as possible to see if it helps my sciatica.
Any other New Year's resolvers?

AussieDebbie 01-02-2014 10:51 AM

I'm with you there. It's 2am here and I am unable to sleep. Usually an extra dose or two of Tramadol takes the edge off the pain, but I somehow feel the need to experience this pain in full force. Not to punish myself, but to remind myself to be a good girl over Easter.

Ohhhh but I'm doomed to failure. Chocolates are my weakness. :p

You are not alone Stacey. :)

Kitt 01-02-2014 02:24 PM

I do not make resolutions. I eat a little more during the holidays but not that much more than I normally eat.

My husband would agree with you on both accounts. I can't entirely blame the holidays for my transgressions, I was stress eating for the past few months, and not able to walk as much as usual.
I enjoy making resolutions, although I cannot point to one I've ever really kept, or that was life changing. Just a diversion.
I do believe I will resolve not to play fetch when I am alone and the yard is under two inches of water.

Stacy2012 01-02-2014 03:51 PM

I don't make resolutions.

It is just a matter of getting back on track after a blowout month of holiday eating.

I just got off the treadmill, only 2 miles. Might as well have been 20. Felt like I was being killed, lol. Oh so easy to get out of shape after a couple weeks off. My feet are worse than ever, I think it is because I have been keeping them soo cool now that it is winter that putting on tight shoes and running them hot was worse than in the summer. Yikes.

Took 4 hours of contemplating doing it before I actually got up and did it. All I can say it, glad it is over. I will never enjoy it but I do like how I feel afterwards. Now me and my swollen toes are gonna drink some chlorophyll and collapse, lol

ElaineD 01-02-2014 04:33 PM

No resolutions now, or ever.

Resolutions just get broken, anyway. It's fun to be part of some group related to resolutions (fitness, weight loss) and see the membership jump for about 6 weeks after January 1! Hard to find a place to park!

By mid February, everything goes back to normal.

And I suppose those with resolutions did undo the excesses of the Holidays, so relaxed a bit.

Anyway, I try to eat about the same amount every day........watching calories and timing of intake. I really love food, so nothing is off limits, but limits are there! I use one of those on line food trackers and it is very helpful to write down everything I eat.

I never quite exercise as much as I'd like, but I do more than my temperament warrants (complete couch potato). And I have the best hours for my health club on my calendar every day, so I have a good reminder.

The best part about being 71 is that I no longer expect to transform myself into anything better.

Right now I'm on a regular dose of prednisone (methylprednisolone actually) so I am feeling very good, with very little pain. This won't last of course, eventually I'll have to come off of the 4mg I take each day as part of my attempt to adjust to my IVIG treatments.

But I take it all a day at a time.

Happy New Year!

Hugs, Elaine

Happy New Year Everyone!!
I'm with you Stacey. I ate way too much over the holidays and probably for a month before. I just went food shopping today and picked good foods.
I'm also the same as you Aussie dark chocolate is my weakness. Even though I asked him not to my husband filled my stocking with all types of it. Of course I'm eating it.

Hopefully, I'll start doing better but I don't think I'll ever give up my dark chocolate. I'll just cut back on the amount I eat. After all, it's said dark chocolate is good for you! HaHa!!!!

mrsD 01-02-2014 08:26 PM

hint: Dark chocolate provides magnesium....;)

Stacy2012 01-02-2014 09:09 PM

I have gone 24 hours without carbs and boy am I feeling it. The withdraw headache...yuck.

Just another price for over indulgence.

CeCe55 01-02-2014 09:11 PM

My one resolution is to eat more dark chocolate, now that I know it is good for me!

Kitt 01-02-2014 09:30 PM

Only eat one little block of it each day. Love it. :)

I like that, it's how it is for me too.

Not that I really indulged, but I haven't been eating properly in December. The scales were still mild this morning (95kg coming from 93 beginning of December), but it just doesn't feel right.

Starting next Monday I'll resume my role of "houseman" and do the cooking. My wife is not ill and is very slim, but she misses the healthy food as well, it made her feel better too.

Stacy2012 01-03-2014 09:24 AM

Yes Wide-O!!! (what does your name mean, lol? It seems wrong to call you wide-o during a weight discussion, lololol)

For me, it isn't what the scale says, it is how I feel, and weight distribution. Even if the scale says the same number, if I have stopped exercising it moves around and FEELS heavier. As you know muscle weighs more that fat, and I feel that difference.

OK..will I get on the dreaded treadmill today? Let's hope, lol. They say it takes a week to make it a habit again...I believe that.

codyc 01-03-2014 09:48 AM

During the holidays I eat more sugar than normal as well. I too am feeling it.

Also realize that most of the weight gain during the holidays, from my experience, is due to water retention. Eating more sugar/simple carbs causes the body to retain more water.

Within a week of getting off of the sugars and back to my normal routine my weight goes back down to normal.

Happy New Year!

It's a nickname/term of endearment (ahem) given by my Scottish friends: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=wideo

Heheh, that was the first thing I thought: "Probably lost 5 kg of muscle and gained 7 kg of fat." :D

I was watching a program yesterday about people who lost a lot of weight, then gained it all back - and then some. That was exactly the motivator I needed. I can see how easy it is to slip back. And for me sugar is truly addictive it seems.

Stacy2012 01-03-2014 12:25 PM

I lost 100 pounds back in 1996 after having twins and then gaining so much. I swore I would never gain it back.

I gained it back over the years.

I lost 60 of it again, have kept it off a year now.

Lesson? Never say never. :(

hopeful 01-04-2014 12:18 PM

Good for you Stacy! Wide-O I too have an addictive tendency to sugars. Once I have that first piece of chocolate I keep going back for more. I can't wait until all the candy is eaten and out of my house.
I have gained 13lbs. since the summer. I really can't understand it. I have mostly always been able to eat what I wanted. If I did gain some wait I could take it right back off again. My daughter said it is because I am less active now. I'm trying to get back into doing the treadmill. I did it the other day. Only a regular walk. My having family over for the football game today. My two granddaughters are coming so I'll be busy. No treadmill today.
Don't know where everyone lives but I have to say GO EALGLES for my home team!!
Have a good day everyone!! Mrs. D. I forgot to say I like the magnesium and chocolate idea!!

Husband and I are native Philadelphians, living in exile in Delaware. My youngest got a McCoy jersey for Christmas and has only taken it off to wash it. Big Eagles fans, but much bigger Phillies fans. All I hear about this time of year is when pitchers and catchers report.
Son in law is a big Flyers fan, but unless he is here we do not watch hockey. Or soccer. My husband rants about all these kids playing soccer being un-American. He is otherwise a sane, intellectual man.
I lost about 50 pounds and kept it off but gave gained at least ten pounds since thanksgiving. I have been much more sedentary by necessity and have not adjusted my eating accordingly. Should be on track in another month. At 6'2" it isn't as much as it sounds but I really don't need the stress on weakened muscles and arthritic joints.

Kitt 01-04-2014 02:03 PM

Hope the Eagles win. Not my home team but I certainly hope that they win. :)

That is so true. I was just thinking,......... If I turned my FAT into MUSCLE, I would weigh even more than I do now??? Sounds like a good excuse for me to stay FAT. :) Just kidding. My sense of humor goes a little haywire sometimes.

Hi Susanne,
I don't know if you watched last night but we were going crazy in my house. My kids all came with spouses and spent the night. Needless, to say we were very disappointed. Then we realized in the beginning of season we never expected them to go anywhere so it was a good season.
In my house we watch the Phillies and Eagles. My son and husband use to have season tickets for the Phillies. My son still lives home and watches hockey. My husband says soccer is not a sport for guys. Men!!

You are lucky to be 6'2". I'm only 5'2". You can only imagine what an extra 13lbs looks like on me.

Sorry you are living in exile but I hope you like it!

I didn't watch the last quarter as I thought we were going to lose, it was worse to find out how close it really was.
You are exactly right, no one expected the season to be this exciting, and beating the Cowboys is always the highlight of the year!

Kitt 01-05-2014 04:28 PM

I watched it all. Too bad about the Eagles. It was a close one. :winky:
