The power of fish oil to restore a traumatized young brain!

This is just an amazing story. It does mention that younger people may respond differently to older people, but it does illustrate how effective fish oil can be to damaged nerve tissue!

Wow truly amazing. Both the Fish oil and the power of Love.
Thank you for sharing Mrs. D.

Aussie:)

Yes, amazing video.

I hope fish oil starts doing amazing things for me...though I do believe I will need a bigger hand from God to go along with it.

hopeful 01-20-2014 01:38 PM

Wow!! I wonder if an increase in our daily dose of fish oil but help with nerve pain. What do you think Mrs. D.?

mrsD 01-20-2014 03:46 PM

You can try it. Don't go really high without doctor's supervision though. No more than 5 a day or so. And take with food for best absorption.

Stacy2012 01-20-2014 05:09 PM

If you are going to try it, I would suggest the oil instead of pills. More per tablespoon.

I I take 2 full tablespoons a day of the liquid Carlsons fish oil, which is more the the 2 teaspoons it says to take. I don't feel comfortable taking more than that, but if you do, let us know how it does for you.

I'm a little afraid to try to be honest. I have started on Enbrel is the last two weeks and I don't know if I should try anything else.
I think what I'm going to do at my next apt is ask my doctor if it is ok to do.
Then I will let you all know:)

mrsD 01-21-2014 04:29 PM

You can start eating salmon. We have to have a certain amount of Omega-3's daily to maintain health. If you do not consume any, you are deteriorating. Omega-3's are ESSENTIAL, like Vit C is. We die without them.

Your question should be about amounts in excess of what is needed in the diet already.

Larger than dietary amounts are given by doctors for lowering triglycerides. Lovaza is the name of that product.

hopeful 01-21-2014 05:06 PM

Hi Mrs. D, I just had salmon last night. I eat it at least once a week. I also take 1 krill oil tablet a day. I like that better than the fish oil. I don't have any burping etc. with the krill oil.

mrsD 01-21-2014 05:25 PM

Okay that is okay then. Taking more you should ask about.

I take 2 krills myself. When these are gone, I am going to start the newer larger dose Mega Red. (Costco just started carrying it). ;)

Stacy2012 01-22-2014 11:40 AM

This is a review from a guy who does tons of reviews on supplements at amazon, it's full of a lot of info on krill oil.

hopeful 01-28-2014 07:41 PM

Thanks Stacy I saved this to my favorites!

Stacy2012 01-28-2014 08:09 PM

That guy does a lot of reviews on supplements that seem pretty thourough.

Oddly enough, my fish oil is causing diarrhea. I had no idea it was the fish oil causing me this issue. Oddly it didn't happen the first couple weeks but I know it is the fish oil, when I quit even one day it goes away. I cut back from 1 tablespoon to a teaspoon and its better but loose. I also get stomach pain the first 30 minutes after I take it.

This is my first experience with fish oil so I dunno.

mrsD 01-29-2014 07:52 AM

Stacy...is there Sorbitol sweetener in that liquid fish oil you take?

Sorbitol is a laxative.

When I click on non active ingredients it says:

Sweeteners

Added to make the nutrients more palatable only in chewable tablets or liquids. Sweeteners found naturally in fruits such as fructose and sorbitol are chosen. More information on fructose and sorbitol can be sent to you upon request.

This is disheartening.

Stacy2012 01-29-2014 09:14 AM

Well this sucks.

I pay all this money for carlsons finest fish oil and it has sorbitol. I have about 1/3 left and now I realize my body is not going to get use to this sorbitol and cant take it.

I just ordered more fish oil from amazon a couple days ago, paid even MORE money for nordic natural omega 3 liquid lemon fish oil and now I am worried they have sorbitol. I cant find a list of their non active ingredients so I have no idea if they do or not.

this. sucks.

mrsD 01-29-2014 09:35 AM

I got sick on sorbitol in Hershey's kisses one summer on vacation (where we have only an outhouse!). It was hidden in the ingredients. I called them up and gave them a piece of my mind!

If you search "sorbitol IBS" you'll find sites that blame sorbitol for IBS now. And I believe that.

Sorbitol is in PEZ sugar free candies, which my son discovered when he was 6. I think people develop a sensitivity to it and so smaller amounts become as laxative as the higher amounts.

Sorbitol is hidden in many foods. In the past only dietetic diabetic sugar containing foods/candies. But now it is in everything! I don't like this situation either.
I let the manufacturer know that I am no longer a customer because of this factor! That "moves" them more than anything. (pun intended).

Stacy2012 01-29-2014 09:46 AM

Thanks for the heads up MrsD!

I did no about sorbitol as it is in many low carb bars and I know to only eat ONE or a small amount if I really want it. Like you said it is in everything but i never thought it would be in fish oil.

I can't find it anywhere on nordic but that doesn't mean it is not in there. I guess I will have to contact them.

Sorbitol should have to be plainly marked on products. :(

mrsD 01-29-2014 10:30 AM

When I pointed this out to Hershey's.... they said FDA requires more obvious labeling on 50gram content per serving or more.

Well, the cherry kisses I had were not obviously labeled. And furthermore, when I had purchased them BEFORE about a year before...that ingredient was not in them. So when we left for vacation I saw an endcap of them and thought ok for desserts these are handy and I didn't read the label because I had bought them once before! I'd like to feed the techs these products who decided to do this, and the management of Hershey's and then let them loose in the woods during a thunderstorm like I was!

Sorbitol has long been a compounding aid in pharmacy in making liquid forms of some drugs. It is now in food as a humectant (preserves moisture and chewiness), and sweetener. Some people are quite sensitive to it...and I believe this sensitivity comes from several exposures.

Sorbitol is also used in hospitals and nursing homes to aid constipation of patients on high dose opiates which are extremely constipating.

Stacy2012 01-29-2014 10:54 AM

Well I just called carlsons and she swore there was no sorbitol in their fish oil, she did say they used it in another product, I cant remember which one, but NOT the one I am using.

So I talked to a second person, and she swore the same thing. NO SORBITOL.

Well, that is a relief. Except now I still have a LOOSE problem, lol

MrsD I can sympathize with you. I ate atkins low carb bar, two of them the first time, it was before I really even knew what sorbitol was. OMG sat on toilet all day.

After that, I learned what sorbitol was real fast.

mrsD 01-29-2014 11:12 AM

People lie .... I bet they are lying.

Without getting too graphic... sorbitol poops are messy ...hard to clean up after. (that was another nasty aspect of my experience-- in the woods without running water for easy clean up).

If your looseness is sticky and messy... that would point to Sorbitol. Did they take the lot # and exp. date from you?

If your label says sorbitol or fructose....that is a way out for them.
Both are FDA allowable sweeteners.

Too much of any oil will not be absorbed well, and can cause looseness.
Olive oil is one example... Extra virgin olive oil is used as a laxative too. People taking many fish oil capsules a day can get loose too. It is always best to take the oils with food... as that slows things down and allows for the bile salts to emulsify the oil for absorption. Taken alone on an empty stomach and the bile may not be released, and hence the oil moves on to the large intestine.

Stacy2012 01-29-2014 11:19 AM

The label doesnt say anything.

She said they use natural lemon flavor and nothing else.

I really can't do much more than that, it is not listed on the label. And it was not a carlsons website that I copied that statement from.

I didn't believe the first person so she got a manage team expert to talk to me. Guess I have to take their word.

And no, it was just normal looking, not to get graphic and draw a picture, LOL

Stacy2012 01-31-2014 11:19 AM

MrsD, do you think it is ok to take my fish oil WITH my 2 tablespoons of flaxseed?

I know that you can't take flaxseed near supplements so I usually don't but I thought maybe since its a shared ingredient, omega 3, that I could take these two at the same times.

Yesterday I ate lunch, took my flaxseed in my drink, than took my teaspoon of fish oil, and YIPPPEEE, no bathroom problems.

But I pay too much for this dang fish oil to waste it if I shouldn't take them together.

I am almost out of the carlsons and just got my order in of the Nordic fish oil, maybe that one will not cause me problems.

mrsD 01-31-2014 11:28 AM

It is best to take all oils with food (a meal or snack)

This is so they will get absorbed better.

Stacy2012 01-31-2014 11:57 AM

I take it with food. I was just wondering if its ok to take the flaxseed and the fish oil at the same time...together with a meal.

mrsD 01-31-2014 01:50 PM

I don't see any reason not to.

These oils are nutrients--- actually food.
These supplements are different from vitamins which are
micronutrients.

The oils are macronutrients, meaning they are taken in GRAMS, rather than milligrams. They move around in your body, and are building blocks for cell walls and other tissue.

kidwonder 02-08-2014 09:11 AM

Wow, amazimg story!!! Thanks MrsD!! How much fish oil do you usually recommend taking?

mrsD 02-08-2014 09:37 AM

Most people can get by with 3 fish oil a day. Less if you eat salmon frequently. I use Krill oil now, at 2 a day.

But when I started a decade ago I took only one flax oil, one fish oil and one evening primrose regular strength. This is very moderate but even at these low doses, we all saw huge benefits here.

I wouldn't go above 5 fish oil a day without a doctor's supervision.
