has anyone used a Ketamine cream?

I just got the cream that my PM had compounded at the pharmacy. It is a Ketamine 10% cream with PLO gel? Has anyone every tried this. I can only use a small amt on my feet because it has the same effect as PCP and the date rape drug? Just wondering? I used today when I got home from grocery shopping. My feet hurt so bad that I don't think anything could have helped. took a percecet and use the cream and went to bed. can't use it again it again until tomorrow afternoon.

cream

My daughter was prescribed a cream that has a mix of 10%ketoprofen,5% ketamine, 5% gabepentin (Neurontin generic), 5% lidocaine, in a lipophylic base. I remembered a thread a while back that people had responded to about creams and how important bases were so when I had the pharmacist create this, I had him make the smallest dose for the prescription and then we could tweak it as necessary. We applied it after warming the foot--usually moist heat and massaged it in for up to four minutes, moistening it as it became tacky. The pharmacists said this was the best way to ensure its absorption. She felt some relief with the cream for breakthrough pain. We also got the socks for lotion as it was a bit greasy. She applied this four times a day.

I searched for a previous thread on this-- it was on page 19--not sure how to hook a link here, sorry. It also referenced an earlier thread to it.

Hope this helps-

RSDMon and Artist.
thank you so much for the information. It does help to know that I'm not the only one using this cream. The doc put the fear into me about the cream. He said use only a small small amt, that if you put too much on then I would be hallucinating. The first day didn't really do anything, but I did get some relief yesterday when the pain started getting real bad.
thanks

I was also prescribed a cream similar to that about 4 months ago. The first one did nothing so the doc told me to stop using it. The second one, unfortunatly, landed me in the er for a few days because of a severe allergic reaction unrelated to the rsd but another disorder. But the allergic reaction to it did cause the rsd to spread (I didn't know rsd could spread from allergic reactions). Sorry I haven't been much of a help with this topic. But I do know someone who had some success with the cream.

I use a Ketamine gel 3 times a day. It's 15% Ketamiine, 10% Lidocaine and 2% Clonidine. I rub it in gently and then wrap my finger (what's left of it) with Saran Wrap so that none of it evaporates. It does help. but it's no magic bullet.

lostmary 05-29-2007 06:47 AM

Does it seem to help. I have to put it on my left foot. Thurs. I misstepted and broke my 2nd toe on my right foot. also ripped all the ligaments apart. I have to keep it taped for 6 weeks to give it a chance to mend. I was thinking of using it on my right foot, but after all the things I've read about misusing drugs, I'm afraid it would be too much or something. I guess I could call my PM and ask. But I know I will not do it. I didn't know about the saran wrap. He said that if I have to go out to wrap it, but I try to use it at nite. which for me is 8.00pm. I guess it would help and not let it get on the sheets. thanks for the advice. I'm gonna try it.

cream

This is just my experience with the ketamine cream. Your reactions could be different.

I use a cream that is 10% ketamine hydrochloride with some other ingredients... I typically use it on the entire top of one foot, about 1/3 of one calf, on one upper arm, and about 75% of my back. I am allowed to use it 4 times a day.

I don't use it right after getting out of the shower, or when my skin temp is really warm, as it seems to work a lot more then... I have had my tongue feel numb before from doing this  but have had no other problems.

Oh... and one time, my massage therapist was putting it on for me after a session. It was the first time she applied it. She was expecting a thicker cream. It is almost a watery liquid. When she went to pour a small amount onto my back, a lot came out, and so she just rubbed it in. Again, I think my skin was warm from the massage.... I did get a light-headed feeling for about half an hour. This was using about 3 times the normal amount. I did not feel really impared... just like I had perhaps a half glass of wine. My massage therapist does apply it with gloves though - she is afraid it might numb her hands - not good for the next patient :D

I like the lidoderm patches because they last longer... a lot of my "areas" are in places I cannot reach, so cannot apply more cream once I am at work. So, I use the patches on those areas, and then use the cream on the places I can easily reach to re-apply. On days I don't work, I use the cream only.

If your read the links to the other posts... you will know that I really believe that the base used for the cream makes ALL the difference.

abbysmom,

It is a prescription compound. I have to go to a special pharmacy to have it made. It really does seem to help. I've learned that I can use more of it that I first thought. It helps other places that hurt also. It does last a long time, but it is kinda expensive. I think the last time I had it made up, it ran about 125 for a jar. It does last several months tho, so I think it is worth it.

Ketamine compound gel

I think I first posted about my gel a couple of years ago. I still use it. at that time it was from custome meds now call snyders. I still use the basic compound and the doctor creted a second mixture for me to treat my lesions with . it has been very effective. Especially for alloydina and the severe pain of lesions. Good luck. Hi I have used the exact cream your using & one that was more expensive with more meds in it. I liked the one you are using betterr & didnt really see any benefit to the other. I could use mine 4 times a day. You just have to rub it in until its gone so the med gets into you good. It helps but I admit I am bad about using it because it kind of smelled funny & was sticky. I am really suprised you can't use it more often. That just seems really strange to me. Hope it works for you.

Hugs,
Denny

Denny,

thanks for the information. I have been using it more, but that is only after I got over my fear of it. I use it on my scs battery site as it hurts so much now. You are so right, it is soooo expensive. but I do take it off on my taxes under medical expense. And there is only one pharmacy that does compounds, and that is about 75 miles on way, so of course, mileage is a deduction also.
hugs

Having compound cream mailed.

Hi All,

I once had the ketamine cream with the meds. in it and the compounding pharmacy would mail the cream to me. I would give them my insurance information over the phone and I would pay what ever co-pay or balance I owed with a credit card over the phone. They may ask you to fax your insurance card. If I remember correctly my doctors office faxed the first RX and they gave them my insurance information. Maybe try this instead of driving. Hope this helps.

Good luck,

Ann

Allanira 02-05-2014 11:59 AM

I've been using a ketamine compound cream for a bit now. The only time it helps is if I use a heating pad and get my leg and foot warmed up really well, put the cream on then back under the heating pad. It's crazy the different reactions we all have to treatments.
