Sewing projects

Thought I'd share some pics of things I have sewn either by hand or on the machine. I am working on a rag quilt now but it's a bigger project.

This is my leopard print embellished Walmart Faded Glory denim Jacket, my mother crocheted the corkscrew fringe in black at my request and I sewed it to the jacket over the leopard print panel I created for the back:

Here's the hats I've made:

And the skull caps I've made for my son and his dad:

I also made a lot of denim purses last year:

What fun eh? What do you like to sew? I've posted pics in the quilting thread of my project in its presewn state. :D Love to hear what you've made!

Those look great. Man you have talent with sewing. My favorite thing to do in Cross stitching. Keep up the good job.

Pamster 02-01-2014 06:45 AM

Thank you Darlene! I've never tried cross stitching but I bet it's relaxing huh? :D ♥

Those purses have some nice features; they look like they'd be adaptable into bookbags/backpacks/satchels.

Our machine is in the shop, which is driving us bonkers. DW is cranking out crocheted flowers & leaves. She dyed a stash of silk ribbon for embroidery, and is working up to trying that too.

Wow that's too bad your machine is in the shop, I really understand about it driving you up the wall to be without it. I am glad you liked the hand bags! They were a blast to make! I was busy yesterday, I managed to get the 165 blocks for my son's special quilt sewn with the X design they needed before I was able to sew together two rows of the blocks to make the start of the actual rag quilt he and I are making together. He has autism, and so that's why I chose the fabrics I did. :D

Here is my set up with the blue blocks on the desk being sewn with X's. I like to chain stitch them, much easier IMO.

Here's the pile of blocks I cut out this weekend, there's a layer of denim in the middle peeking out to help it rag and bloom nicely, as well as adding a little extra warmth to it:

And here's my blocks cut and assembled, and ready to sew X's on:

I have a pretty complex (for me anyway for my first and second attempted quilts) pattern to work with, each of my blocks is denim, leopard flannel on the other outside and brown flannel on the inside peeking out:

It will end up looking like this:

I am really enjoying sewing, only been at it for a LONG time, mostly by hand, used a machine in high school and used my mother's old singer before that as a girl making doll clothes. But this machine, the Necchi Supernova, MAN it's a DREAM machine!! So loving using it. It was my mother's husband's mother's. And it has the cams to do the decorative stitches and the buttonhole cam wrench to do those too! I haven't had the nerve yet to attempt those things with it, but I definitely appreciate it's raw power. :D What kind of machine do you and your DW have Dr. Smith? LOVE the name btw, he was always my fav character on Lost in Space too. :D

Pamster 02-04-2014 07:49 AM

Oh yeah, in case you missed it (LOL) I have a big thing for Leopard prints....LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AND guess what??

I finished the quilt today! All except for snipping the seams with my spring loaded scissors and laundering it! :D (I will be making some kind of sheet bag to put it in and then work on taking it to a laundromat to do it there since i don't want to overload my machine, this sucker is HEAVY! :D

It's an older Bernina. The gears in the embroidery unit are worn out; I'm a bit concerned it may be too old to get parts, and I'm sure the unit can't be replaced either. We called today and they haven't even started it yet. :(

Doc

Pamster 02-05-2014 06:39 AM

Oh no. I really hope they have a parts machine around there. I bet that's about the only way. :( I'd be just sick over that loss. :(

Pamster 02-05-2014 07:07 PM

I shouldn't have spoken sew soon, mine needs to go to the repair shop tomorrow, the tech who does my machine work reasonably and is the only one I trust frankly, said he'd fix it while we waited...I sure hope it's okay. It's clicking now, still sews, but it's clicking.

Before this happened that this clicking started, well I managed to get two rows done and sewn together, along with getting all the x's done on the blocks for the rag quilt:

Wish me luck tomorrow with my machine....Hope it can be fixed....

Pamster 02-06-2014 12:22 PM

All fixed now! BACK to the Leppard Quilt! :D :D :D

I didn't finish the entire quilt yet, this was my pattern checking with it laid on the bed, I did pretty well maintaining the overall pattern I think. Hope you like it! I did sew up all 15 rows of 11, but they aren't attached to one another yet, only the top two are. :D

Pamster 02-07-2014 07:47 PM

I can't edit now, so here's the latest! I finished! :D

Hooray!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Raigne 02-12-2014 07:03 PM

WOW! You are amazing with that sewing machine! I recently had to make hats for a Mad Hatter birthday party and I used poster board and felt. Let's just say while it looked ok on the outside it looked terrible inside. I LOVE how yours look so clean and professional inside and out.

And the quilts are seriously impressive. I tell myself that "one day" I will learn how to quilt. But since I draw and paint and only "sort of" sew, I have to wait til I get sick of drawing and painting to take the quilting class. I tend to go nuts buying supplies so I need to use up what I have before I start buying fabric like a crazy woman.

Pamster 02-21-2014 09:04 AM

Thanks Raigne! Quilting takes precision in the cutting for the sewing to go well. I did well on mine but I am going to attempt the Fun & Done quilting as you go style next, so it will have all finished edges, and no ragging effect. :D There's a AWESOME free Mini class on Craftsy you can take on quilting basics, I really enjoyed it! It's awesome to see this teacher, Gail Kessler teaches it: http://www.craftsy.com/class/piece-p...ing-skills/369 It's a great class! :D SO happy you liked my sewing projects! :D I wish I could draw or paint, those are big time skills to possess! :D

That, and geometry/math skills. ;) Fortunately (Raigne—sorry, I don't know how much you do/don't know about quilting) there are many techniques (such as 'fun & done', 'stack-n-whack', paper-piecing, & many more) to explore and find your aptitude.

Some things carry over from drawing & painting, e.g. landscape quilting... ;)

Doc

Raigne 02-22-2014 05:06 PM

Ok, my quilting skills are NIL. Once I was told there was math involved my brain shut off. I just smile and nod when I'm told how easy it is. LOLOL I can see the details are what matters most to make a beautiful quilt and my brain no longer operates in the details.

I may want to try the "wing it" type methods. LOL That's me in so many ways. I'm self-taught in everything: painting, sewing, drawing, etc. I think for quilting I will have to take that class you shared the link to, Pam. Thank you so much for that!

I appreciate both of you taking the time to respond. :)

Pamster 02-26-2014 08:26 PM

I got a LOT out of the class Raigne, I hope it helps you too! It was well worth watching. :D I am gearing up to start a new quilt, just bought fabric today as a matter of fact. :) So we'll see how it goes. :) I am doing the Quilt as you Go/Fun & Done style of quilting for it though. Praying I can make it work....

Pamster 02-27-2014 08:32 PM

Made two more skull caps today!
