Razzle...sorry I'm so late...

in catching your post...I've been on Keppra for about 3+ years now...With little bad in the way of s/e's UNLESS I forget my AM pill or fall asleep before my PM ones...Making up for missed doses, or worse the missed doses themselves is one strange adventure?

I couldn't tolerate the Neurontin AT ALL...sleeping 16-18 hours each day, only in 3-4 hour intervals, not dreaming, and then hallucinations...well. What good is being half dead, to with lowered pain? Life for 6-8 hours each day only? NOT! I was switched to Tramadol, didn't do anything for the pain, but I did get my brain back? I then traded off to Keppra and I have my brain and SOME, not lots of pain control...tramadol helps there when really needed. I try not to, so the pain killers can really work when really truly needed. Sigh.
Neurotin, I couldn't finish any sentence started - couldn't remember.
Keppra I can, and my mind at times goes too fast for my mouth to keep up?
Some folks complain of a 'rage'? If I've had RAGE, it was upon the addition of other meds for other things.

Just, don't forget a dose....I find myself getting foggy and off kilter for want of better words when I do. Once I get that dose into me..within 45 minutes I am much bette. I hope this helps! - j

Is keppra an opiod? I've tried several other opiods

Just curious - I think I read about this drug somewhere. I've tried over 40 drugs (too many to list) at highest doses. No help for pain of FM, RSD and TMJ as well as burning lips mouth and aching teeth from a medication(neuropathic mouth pain).
Desperate for any ideas.

fiberowendy2000 06-01-2007 07:02 AM

Keppra is like Neurontin...not an opoid Sydney.

razzle51 06-02-2007 03:52 PM

drug

I would say Keppra is nothing like Neurontin . No weight gain , no brain fog . Nothing

fiberowendy2000 06-03-2007 05:30 AM

Raz, I meant it was in the same family. Geez if the docs gave me Keppra instead of Neurontin I wouldn't weigh as much as I do.

razzle51 06-03-2007 12:04 PM

neurontin and weight gain

:) thats a big 10/4

Is keppra an anti convulsant?

I am curious about keppra. I am already on lyrica for the 2nd time but going up to doses above those usually used. (above 400). I am so desperate.
Just wondering about keppra. Haven't tried that drug. I also am reading about tramadol. Is that ultram? I've tried that too. Now on skelaxin but it makes me nauseated. Also on aleve as I now have TMJ pain. Add this to the Fibro and RSD , meralgia paresthetica - gosh I can't imagine one person can have all these conditons which cause chronic pain as well as disability.
I am not too hopeful about the TMJ being resolved (I got it a few months ago) as my joint is now popping and aches like crazy along with a constant terrible earache. Difficulty chewing - so sick of soup and a soft diet. Best wishes to all for pain free days. I haven't had one in so long I can't remember.

pono 06-29-2007 08:23 AM

Keppra

is anticonvulsant , w/ other uses besides seizures.
Razzle, are you taking for pain or something else??
How did you begin--dosage-- if I recall you take 1000mg--2day??

Keppra was just prescribed to me, per my request to try--for several issues inc. headaches & nerve pain. I may have seizures too --have "Sx" but tests were negative, so not a confirmed Dx.

My Hx w/ meds has been problematic-- I don't usually give up like many may, try to endure side f/x , for benefits, while body adjusts.
Keppra seems to have fewer side f/x indicated than other meds.I've tried.

Dr gave low starting dose--250mg- 2xday; since I seem to be so senstive since last TBi-- he even said I don't know If will work RE: dose. but this DR wasn't very familiar w/ Keppra--he knows & prefers Lyrica, Cymbalta, Nuerontin & topamax---all have been tried.

any info you'd care to share, appreciated.

dahlek 06-29-2007 10:59 AM

Neurontin and Lyrica are first-

cousins of same formula...Keppra is in the same neighborhood but different formula. Neither I believe are SSRI's [things I do NOT do well on BTW] All three are in the anti-seizure family and the hows/whys of the way they short circuit the pain cycle is a mystery to the mfrs, researchers and all that.
Tramadol, ultracet and ultram are all similarly connected as well..
Ultracet is Tramadol and Acetaminofen together, at times thought to have an extra 'Punch' [again not known why] with the tramadol.
They are all closely related, but the ultracet has the acetaminofen as a one-two punch so one can take a lower dose of the narcotic and get a better result due to the extra asorbtion -I think. I read up on this all a long time ago and all I know is that they KICK IN big time when needed. I try not to take on a regular basis because of potential s/e's especially on the digestive tract.. Since I have a working one...I want to keep it that way.
I did not have any indications of what's known as 'keppra rage' until I went on an AI for cancer issues..[THAT med also is known for 'attitude changes'...MANY] I believe the combo aggravated or increased stress and stress related coping mechanisms... Does this all help?
I DO know that I was wholly, totally and completely a miserable soul on neurontin. Topamax did absolutely zero good or bad for me, but Keppra got my mind back and keeps the pain levels down a notch or two. - j

They do seem to help the pain a little, but i`m also on neurontin, tegretol.
methadone & amytrytaline but also have seizures.
The neurontin caused me a lot of weight gain, but no appetite, been on these drugs 5-6 yrs now.
I am due to have another nerve block 3rd sept before i go on hols 26th
but feeling very unsure at the moment abought having it done.

Keppra...yep!

I had posted something like this on the TOS forum.... I take Keppra 500mg 2x and 1000mg 1x daily. I tried Neurontin with only slight luck. Doc then put me on Lyrica.... 10 days later I was in the ER; they think I had an allergic reaction to that. SO, when I started seeing my pain mgmt doc, we tried Keppra. 9 months, so far, so good (except that i still have to take it).

Sydney 07-20-2007 12:22 PM

Off lyrica - would keppra help fibro pain or RSD pain?

OK - first I thought this Dr. was going to go above 400mg with the lyrica as I have been on it before at this dose with no help. At the last visit now he says I am maxed out at 400 and to discontinue it. Thanks - after gaining 10 pounds. I am so frustrated. I think he forgot and I had so many other issues at the time with my new TMJ diagnosis that I forgot also.
Now I am back on methadone for the 3rd time. Made me nauseated before so I'll try some compazine with it and see if that helps.
So - anyone know if keppra could help with fibromyalgia pain? I already tried ultram and it did nothing. Also tried all the heavy hitters: ms contin, oxy, ketamine, dialaudid, etc. etc.
My body doesn't even know I am taking them. No reaction at all to the lyrica and others - except weight gain and nausea from codeine and acetamenophin.
Thanks,
Sydney

Sydney - I have been taking Keppra for ~10 months now. Neurontin didn't do anything to me except make me feel out of it. Keppra helps the neuropathy, not in a HUGE way though. If I forget to take it, however, I KNOW that I didn't take it.

razzle51 08-06-2007 02:01 PM

Keppra

I thought you could only go up to 1500 mg twice aday . If you can go more where does it say that . thanks

johnston1 09-18-2011 09:53 AM

Keppra

I take 500mg twice a day on the brand Keppra and Tegretol xr 400mg twice a day. I hadn't has a seizure in 11 years. I've heard bad things about the gentric keppra from what I have read I think I'm just going stick wtih the brand. Even though our health insurance is going up. I just hope the insurance don't force me to go generic.

Hi, razzle51:

I do not know if you saw the very important information Sue provided about Keppra in the epilepsy thread. Maybe you could take a look at it.

kittycapucine1974 09-22-2011 02:11 PM

Hi, razzle51:

I also take Keppra (two 500 mg tablets twice daily), but I take it for epilepsy. It does not really do anything for my severe chronic full body RSD pain, which is better controlled by Duragesic, MSIR, and Tambocor.

kittycapucine1974 09-22-2011 02:20 PM

Hi, dabbo:

Quote: "Neurontin didn't do anything to me except make me feel out of it. Keppra helps the neuropathy, not in a HUGE way though. If I forget to take it, however, I KNOW that I didn't take it."

If you had not mentioned this, I think I would have asked my neurologist to switch me to Neurontin because I thought Neurontin was better than Keppra at controlling neuropathic pain.

BTW, are you a member of Phi Theta Kappa? I thought you could be because of the saying you put at the end of your message. I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa in two different colleges.

keppra

where is sue s post ? I have been on Keppra now going on 5 years and its the generic . also I did Miss 4 days of Keppra when my luggage was lost on a flight and nothing happen . druggist said it was ok but if it went into a week I would need to get some , but my luggage was found . and lesson learned carry medications with you on the plane . I have read that crazy med site and to each his own. all I know it helps me and I will not get off unless something happens . If that were to happen I think I will try Savelle . and yes my pain is nerve pain. hope I answered all questons. R

kittycapucine1974 09-30-2011 02:59 PM

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread129441.html

I found Sue's post on Keppra there.

I only accept Keppra brand name from the pharmacist. On generic Keppra, not only did my seizures increased, but also my pain. My neurologist told me that someone who started on brand name Keppra should continue taking brand name Keppra instead of switching to generic Keppra. He said it is okay for a person who always took generic Keppra to continue taking generic Keppra.

My dosage of Keppra was increased from two tablets twice daily to three tablets twice daily. With all the medications I am taking, I really have the feeling of being a walking pharmacy.

razzle51 10-12-2011 06:19 AM

read sues post . Everyone is different . I am on 1000mg 2 times aday with no problem and will continue .

kittycapucine1974 10-14-2011 07:04 PM

Hi, razzle51:

I take brand name Keppra without any problems. I take three 500 mg tablets (=1,500 mg) twice daily. The night time dose is taken with a 2 mg Klonopin tablet, without any problems either. I still have some seizures, but no medications in the world is 100% effective, whatever the disease treated is.
