New chatbar + chatrooms

Hi folks,

Due to a change in our chat software, we are no longer able to share chatrooms with our sister site, the Forums at Psych Central. I apologize for this inconvenience. (You're still welcomed to chat over there, you just need to register on that forum separately.)

We've installed new chatbar software at the bottom of your screen that has a few chatrooms on it. It also allows you to chat instantly with other members who are on your Friends list.

You can set your status to be "Invisible" or "Busy" if you prefer not to use this feature.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
DocJohn

Oh, this is nifty... Thanks, Doc!

I just tried it... it brings up screens of the IDs but won't let me type anything. ???? any thoughts,.

DocJohn 05-24-2014 07:42 AM

You have to click on an ID to start a chat with that specific person.

mrsD 05-24-2014 08:10 AM

I did that...

I clicked on an ID---actually back when there were 3 available, and now again on yours--- in your separate box, which comes up, the cursor shows and blinks but I cannot type with it.

It is similar to when your browser gets stuck and you have to leave a page and come back after a reboot. I've had my cursor at rare times stop typing, in the past in other situations.

I can type fine as you can see in this reply box.

Kitty 05-24-2014 08:50 AM

I just tried to chat and I got her icon and the message that she was online but couldn't type anything.

mrsD 05-24-2014 08:54 AM

I did not see the lower type box...before.

This may not have scrolled up or it was in my blur zone...as I wear trifocals. After breakfast and now I can see the zone with the blue icon. But I could not see it before.

Thanks, Doc. Sorry to be a pain.:o

I'm thinking the Chatrooms is more for shared convos and the Chat Now is for private convos like IM.

*The little bug or alien icon is a games section - so try those out for fun..*

mrsD 05-24-2014 12:45 PM

Yes, and it seems that the Chat Now is for people you have friended in your profile, and who log on.

BTW there are jillions of icons/smilies for the main chat room!

Jomar 05-24-2014 12:55 PM

some info about the new Chat system-

Chemar 05-24-2014 01:52 PM

just an alert.....for anyone who goes to the cometchat site to read up....PLEASE do not confuse their own chatrooms and Chat Now box with ours.....they look the same but they are not us ;)

You have to come back to the NT page for our own chat now and chatrooms

Lara 05-24-2014 03:50 PM

Oh, I'm glad I read this message.

Haven't even had a coffee yet this morning and I thought I'd woken up and my computer had been taken over by spybots. :o

mrsD 05-24-2014 03:52 PM

Hi, Lara. Go to Chat Now...and we can talk and you can practice and see how it works. ;)

Chat now is for friends one on one, and private.

Lara 05-24-2014 04:33 PM

Excellent feature!

Thank you very much. :)

and so I was just alerting members that if they go to that site to read up more about our new chat system, they should also be aware that cometchat.com has its own chatrooms and Chat Now box that look just like ours. Members might get confused. (some already have been ;) ) so I was pointing this out to avoid confusion...............

mrsD 05-26-2014 04:24 PM

On the first day, Rosie....we were all chatting and a site was shared that provides this software. It has its own chat for people installing it on their forums to ask questions and one person, mixed them up with us. So some people looked at that site and there was a mix up... That is all. When a person has several windows open and some things look identical...that can happen, you know...;)

Are you confused by the chat itself? If so ask questions and we will try and answer.

Rosie33 05-26-2014 04:32 PM

I think I got it......

I have no idea what cometchat is all about. I never realized there were 2 different sites for Neurotalk forums...totally confused. I did have a problem not being able to open links in messages this morning, but somehow clicked the right thingy to be able to do so now!:yahoo:

mrsD 05-26-2014 04:38 PM

CometChat is a company that provides software to owners of forums to install on their home forums for their members.

Some of us wanted to see more details about how it works etc..so the link was provided here.

It is NOT another NeuroTalk. ;) They use their own software however and that is how the mixup occurred.

DocJohn got us the CometChat software because our old chat didn't work anymore. So now we have the option to chat in real time. The Chat Now feature is for friends one on one to talk like an instant messenger. The Chatrooms on the left of the bar are like the old chats where several people can talk to each other.

You don't have to use it...you can click the down arrow at the far right and the bar can then be hidden.

Living_Dazed 05-26-2014 04:44 PM

Hmmm...digesting all this. ?

Living_Dazed 05-26-2014 04:53 PM

Hi Everyone,

I don't see a chat bar? Is it going to be different because I use an ipad? Laptop screens bother my eyes.

Jace

Jomar 05-26-2014 04:58 PM

Maybe your Chat bar has gotten shrunk down??

If I shrink mine it will only show as a little Icon with a blue circle/bubble on the lower right corner.. then to expand it click it and the bar appears across the bottom of the screen..

Here's the bottom of my screen. Does it look like yours? Should I be on a certain page?

Thanks for the help.Attachment 8267

Chemar 05-26-2014 05:08 PM

The chat bar is not showing on my iPhone so perhaps it is not formatted for phones and tablets

Living_Dazed 05-26-2014 05:13 PM

Thanks for that.

That's a huge disappointment if it can't work on i products.

I wonder if there is an app for our site.

Jo*mar is the stickie up yet with the other stickies in the TBI/concussion rooms for games and chat or am I unable to see it since I use an iPad?

Jace

Thanks for all you Mods do and for helping me.

We usually would only sticky a thread if it is active....that one has only your reply so far. You can see all the stickies and rest of the forums on an iPad.
May be best to ask about that in PM or on that thread to keep this one on topic.

DocJohn 05-27-2014 06:12 AM

It does not work on iPhone and iPads at the moment, but works fine on Macs. We'll see if anything can be done to fix that oversight.

Living_Dazed 05-27-2014 07:23 AM

Thanks DocJohn,

The iPad is the best screen for my brain. Less headaches.

Jace

The developers say there's not enough screen real estate on tablets to let their toolbar function appropriately.

Instead, they recommended downloading the free app:

For iPad/iPhone:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/come...594110077?mt=8

For Android:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ipts.cometchat

On the first line of the login screen, remove the cometchat.com URL and replace it with:

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/chats/

Then enter your Neurotalk username and password. That connects you to the same people using the chatbar on our site.

Sorry if this isn't quite what you had in mind, but given the technical limitations of tablets, I can understand why they went this route.

DocJohn,

It works! :)

It's a great solution. Thank you for taking time out of your schedule to do that.

Peace and wellness,

Jace
