I am a new girl
Hello Everyone , I am very new to this and new to neuropathy and very frightened as I am sure you all know well.
I have a question for Mrs D please. I have been reading the forums and you seem such a wonderful person, so helpful and knowledgable. I have had what seems to be neuropathy for 7 weeks after taking metranidazole. I have pain in arms and legs and feed and tingling and burning. I have had nerve conductiion test which was normal plus examination by neurologist with sensory tests normal but I have the symptoms, and I am so frightened of the pain and sensations which seem to be getting worse or at least i feel as if they are. I have low energy and brain fog I have started some supplements and have been checking your advice can I please trouble you to see if I am helping my condition. I am taking two fish oil caps daily 2 magnesium glycinate wich equal 200mg 1 benfotamine 80mg vitaminic C+ mag 2 grams Probiotic with lacobacillus +biffidum I am very sensitive to medication so of course wished I had not taken the doctors damn tablets but it was part of triple therapty for hpylori which also included amoxcillyn and lansaprozole ( i took 4 days of 7 day course but being so sensitive did the damage) I am thining of adding lipoic acid and acetyl l cartnine to my above supplements What else can I do please. Being new to this does the answer ( if of course you have time) come to my email or on the forum. I value your help and any other meembers I wish you all well and send you all my very best wishes |
Welcome lizzieh. :Tip-Hat:
Someone will be along to help. |
Hello lizzieh,
Welcome to the NeuroTalk Support Groups. Just so you know, mrsD is on vacation right now and her internet is somewhat restricted but is able to get online to reply to posts from time to time. I thought I'd let you know that just in case you didn't get a quick reply. :) You also may get more input from others if you repost over on the Peripheral Neuropathy Forum There is also a subforum at PN that has lots of helpful information. Hi , there and welcome to NeuroTalk.
Recovering from metronidazole can take Some time. But some studies do say recovery Is possible. I'd raise the benfotiamine to 300mg for a Couple of months, as this helps with the aldehyde excess metronidazole can cause. Also the damage this drug causes tends to be to the myelin of the axons. Some studies show white spots to the myelin in the brain, for example. So using nutrients that facilitate myelin repair may be useful. omega-3 in fish or Krill oil Methyl cobalamin B 12 Methyl folate as Metafolin 800mcg daily A good magnesium supplement (not oxide type) some activated B6 called P5P All help with this. You can find more suggestions By Googling "supplements for remyelination" I think acetyl carnitine may help too because It is used successfully in other drug induced Nerve damage issues. (Eg:chemo and antiretroviral treatments) Start at 500mg a day and you can increase to 2 grams A day in divided doses . |
Thank you

Dear Mrs D THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH, for your reply especially as you are on holiday. I am so very frightened as I know everyone on this site is or certainly has been and I really due appreciate you taking this time. I am taking B!" methylcobalmin 1000 mg a day Should I take a complex vit b that includes P5P B6 or one on its own Is there anything I can do with diet, I am gluten, yeast and sugar, alcohol free. I am taking 2 EPA fish oil capsules a day. Shall I continue with the alopoic acid. I will start the acetyl l carntnine. I am very sensitive to medication so I am trying to be sensible even with supplement. i I will of course google remylination ThankYou Again, you are so very kiind. I wish you a happy vacation My Very Best Wishes Liz x. |
NOW company makes a good P5P.
It is difficult finding it in mixture products. Make sure you take the B12 on an empty Stomach for best absorption. If you want more I' d chose the acetyl carnitine for now. But keeping thing simple in the beginning is Best. That way you may see improvements And not need other things.;) |
Again THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH

Mrs D, I am very sorry to trouble you again especially on your holiday but I just want to get things right, I am so firightened and at the moment in so much pain. Am I taking enough B12 i am taking 1000mg methcobamin sprayed under tongue. Should I continue with lipoic acid ( i have taken for two days or should I exchange this for the acetyl l cartnine. Should I take a Vit B complex + metfolin. I promise this is the last time i will bother you. Please do no worry about answering quickly you certainly deserve a rest there are so many people wanting your valuable advice and I don't mean to compromise your time. I thank you from the bottom of my heart at this bad time for me Very Best Wishes Liz x |
I would think--
---a 1000mcg Methylcobalamin B12 tablet would be just as effective as any of the "sprayed sublinguals", which are not really appreciably absorbed under the tongue anyway.
The minimum daily requirement for B12 is somewhere in the neighborhood of 2-10 mcg each day, depending on age and absoprtion factors. The reason for "megadosing" with 1000mcg each day, or higher, is so that even if one has lost all the parietal cells in the stomach, one will still passively absorb through the digestive tract somewhere around 1-2% of the dose (10-20mcg) and meet one's requirements that way, and even begin hopefully to replenish stores if one has been deficient for a while (the body will appreciate the extra for repair if needed). Given that methylcobalamin is cheap and easy to find--I buy a 100 pack of 1000mcg through on-line vendors such as Swanson or iherb (depending on what else I'm ordering and what sales I can fold them in with) which lasts 3 months plus and costs about 8-9 dollars total. So it's a very easy and inexpensive insurance policy. I'm actually partial to R-lipoic acid, the active R-isomer form of alpha lipoic acid, for it's blood sugar stabilizing and antioxidant effects--and because one can take much less of it for a roughly similar effect (about 50-100mg of R-lipoic translates roughly into 300-600mg of alpha lipoic in terms of efficacy for most people). Some people find the larger doses of alpha-lipoic acid, well, acidy, and taking the R-lipoic helps to mitigate this. Remember to take the methylcobalamin on an empty stomach, at least an hour before and two hours after eating; the cobalamin molecule is the largest one our body regularly uses as a nutrient and as such it is easy to complex it or interfere with its absorption if other stuff is around to compete with it. |
Since you already have the lipoic you might
As well use it. There are no interactions with the other With your other supplements that I have Seen. Yes, I'd do the methyl folate as insurance in case you have the DNA mutation. There is a good B complex with activated B's in it by Jarrow called B-Right. It is at IHerb.com and Amazon. You would have To use it on an empty stomach to get the Best absorption of the B12 unless you use Another B12 separately. Many people here over the years have used The B-Right and liked it. |

Thank You So Much Mrs D, I have just received my Full blood count and my B12serum level is 429, in the UK our reference margins are between 190 - 700, my folate is 16.3 our UK ref margins 4.50 - 18.50. I really think I have a malabsorption problem, I had my gall bladder out and seem to have problems this last 12 months, I have lost a stone and a half weighing at just under 7 stone which I skeletal for my height Oh Dear. I will take R lipoic acid instead of normal, I need all the help I can get at the moment, I seem to be getting worse, I feel absolutely awful so I am really sorry to keep troubling you I am just desperate as I know many people on this forum have felt. I so thank you for your time and expertise, all the doctors I have seen have not been much help. I am now also being tested for Lyme, as I did have skin and itching issues before the Metranidazole nightmare started but the neuropathy certainly is linked to this goddam drug I am so sorry to moan and here are you trying to enjoy your holiday.. My Very Best Wishes Liz xx |
