Downtown Abbey Thread -- lots of spoilers
It good that Cora has something interesting going on this season.
We also got to hear a little about what she was like before she married Lord Grantham. ;) |
Looks like she had some "work" done on her face too... also they are photographing her from certain angles alot. She was becoming somewhat simpering, so yes, expanding her part, is a nice relief from the other tensions.
I liked the comment from Lord Grantham about the painting man stealing his dog's affections! That was really funny! There are some pretty funny statements being aired this season. Many of the scenes seem much darker this season, even hubby noticed it was harder to see some things than before. |
I had to turn up the volume.
loved the show! bizi |
and how she said that he should be watching the flirting going on......or something like that.

What happened to tony and lady mary? I feel like I missed something.
Maybe I missed last sundays show....I did not know that the sergeant visited them about green. is it just me? sigh |
Quote:
Now she has decided that Tony is good in bed but that they have not much else in common. Also, she kind of grew up with Tony as a child remember . . … and that she gets bored easily. == The sergeant visited last week too but it was very quick. |
Thank you mari.
It is so funny I was reading your post back to me with lady marys voice for yours lol Jeff preordered and paid for this seasons 5 series. can't wait for it to come in the end of this month so we can watch it again ASAP!:) |
It is weird that Charles is going out with the same woman that
Tony dumped last season -- Mabel Lane Fox. M |
I talked with jeff about my questions and gave him a report of this weeks show that he missed. he said nothing new really just further developement of last weeks show. which I don't remember, probably from drinking too much.
sigh:( love the show and yes interesting about charles. I think mary really likes him. bizi |
About Barrows.... is what he up to what I think he is up to?
At first I was confused, but the hints of the "magazine" seems like he is doing something not approved of at that time? He looked awful coming back home... I couldn't get a real look at the ad that was flashed for one second in the magazine, but I suspect it was something an adolescent male would read and try? or "hooking" up? |
I have no idea what is up with Barrow.
I thought it was something to change his sexual orientation???? I thought the magazine article said something about it is your choice or maybe decision. bizi |
The movie Road to Wellville had many electrical gadgets of that nature in it. I mistakenly took my early teen son to see it thinking it was about the history of Kellogg's...but but...:o
I should have researched it. (we didn't have a computer then). Boy did I get the questions after THAT! LOL He thought it was a great movie too... I less so.:o |

Elizabeth McGovern's accent on the show.
Quote:
Thanks for that, Bizi, I find Elizabethan McGovern's accent on the show interesting. She is an American who moved to England about twenty or or thirty years ago to marry a Brit director. -- sounds somewhat American and somewhat British on Downtown Abbey Here she is mostly American https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtRnCHuNQXM Here is she is with her British band: Sadie & The Hotheads https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bZL0sPQq2o M |
That was a great spoof. I enjoyed it.
The gal who played Cora did a wonderful job! |
I am looking on Downton forums for other peoples' take on Thomas.
One person provided a screen capture of the magazine (whose on air time was too short for me to see well). Here it is: http://downtonabbey.wikia.com/wiki/T...mphletS5E4.png Many people have speculated that he may have diabetes...since Isobel mentioned it in a recent episode...the new insulin availablity etc. Another said that one old treatment for homosexuality (conversion) was injection of apomorphine..to cause vomiting, connected to conversion to conventional straight behavior. So we will just have to wait and see what evolves on the show. I think his scene with Anna, on "not being liked", had more to do with his horrible sneaky troublemaking behaviors, rather than his sexual orientation. But it might be both in fact. He seems to be an antisocial type, with a poor conscience. There is a "spoiler" here that it is something else: http://downtonabbey.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:16905 (and everyone is wrong so far in the speculations) |
Got our season 5 dvd in!!!!
Rewatched episode one...seemed vaguely familiar...must have been tipsy when I watched it the first time several weeks ago. sigh I was clear headed last night and appreciated all of the subtleties that I missed when I watched it the first time, also their accents seemed heavier, harder to listen to. poor edith.... bizi |
good episode tonight!
I thought robert was going to kill him! Do you think tom will see miss bunting again? bizi love the show....we own the 5th season so we watched it when we came home. still not sure what is up with barrow. bizi |

I seem to recall seeing a trailer commercial for the 5th season, where Tom tells them he is going to America... that led me to think, he will be taking Ms. Bunting with him. But I may be mistaken.
|
I won't spoil it but something happens that is really shocking!:)

I think Tom is having second thoughts about letting her out of his life. So wouldn't be surprised if we see the two of them together, at least for a time. Gerry |
I recorded it but did not watch it this weekend because I got some work done instead.
I read ahead all the recaps including the Christmas special (the season V finale) so I will get around to watching it. I am still angry that Dan Stevens / Matthew Crawley got killed off at the end of season three. There has been no reason to watch it . . . . so I kind of put up with the show but am not excited about it. I am lost without Matthew  Mari |
I miss mathew too.
be patient things get interesting in the next 2 episodes. We are saving the last episode for later, maybe valentines day??? Which is this saturday. bizi |
I read all the spoilers. So i know what happens.
Violet and Rose are fun. Edith also. M |
Michelle Dockery
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...g-romance.html
Michele Dockery is getting married in real life. In the photo she is beautiful. ==== I am watching for how Edith's story gets played out. She deserves peace and happiness. Also thankful that Cora is doing stuff this season.:) M |
Yes edith has had such misery over the years...happy she is getting some happiness now. mary is getting married! Is it true that next year will be the end of downton abbey?
bizi |
Quote:
Maybe they will tie up some plot lines and make everyone happy at the end of season VI. And some of the actors hope to get jobs in the US -- they will be free to do other work. |
DVR ---not recording!!
Downton Abbey did not record.
I got on the phone with the cable company. Hubby and I spent 35 mins rebooting/resetting the cable "box." Everything is fine except that that show and some others are not recorded. 'Will watch them when they come back in re-runs. Mari |
we watched the final episode tonight. happiness abounds.
I am so sorry mari about your recorder yes you can watch this weeks next week 2 hours earlier than the next episode comes on. bizi |
I watched the episode with Cora and Lord Grantham putting the dog on the bed to die during the night while lying between them.
Cora said she would want to die next to her loved one like the dog will. I am crying. === I have to cancel the sleep doc appt. for what feels like a few hours from now. Everything is too hard. |
Omg!

Something happened to me during my combat tour in Iraq. I came back with absolutely no compassion for human life - HOWEVER anything to do with animal cruelty or animals dying I break down into big time tears and shaking. My shrink said she is seeing more of this with Vets coming back from last two wars and its due to seeing and doing things that involve other humans killing each other, and that animals are helpless and rely on us to help them live. When my last Service Dog died I was more broken up than losing Marines in Iraq! TOTAL MESS for at least a year ! Anyway- I do think ISIS is going to pas away and hope they get another dog. These rich folks barely notice the dog but I am glad they showed Lord Grantham being concerned about her during this show. Breaks my heart . |
welcome to the forums gunny, I want to thank you for your service to this great country you are a true american.
Having said that I want to tell you how sorry I am that you are suffering with the debilitating aftermath of war. I am sorry that you are in pain. I noticed that you have been posting a bit in other forums, please be patient as some of them are slow to respond which is frustrating. Feel free to continue to post here, we welcome anyone, not every one is bipolar who posts here. It is good to cry...very cathartic. My husband also cries / gets upset about animals. He is just sensitive and has never served in the war. hugs to you today.(((((HUGS)))) bizi I use a memory foam pillow it is a firm support, I have undiagnosed neck issues. |
spoiler
I saw the last ten minutes:
Mrs Patmore's nephew gets a plaque for his sacrifice. James Barrow takes care of something but I do not know what it is. Mary is completely rid of her suitor what's his name -- the boring guy from old money (but not a lot ) and a family who will not be part of the new England Lord Grantham recognizes Edith's child as his grandchild. We get to see Matthew Goode next week :D And the Ana and Bates story line is awful. Maybe those two should move to another country. |
Maybe Anna and Bates could move to Canada? And be in Toronto with William Murdoch?
Anyone here who is not watching this Canadian series, The Artful Detective (aka Murdoch Mysteries), is missing a similarly enjoyable time, if they love Downton. Set in the same time period, using tons of authentic looking sets etc, it is an entertaining historical fictional account of forensics and culture. Many of the shows have historical figures showing up...and their inventions. Henry Ford, Winston Churchill, Oliver Hoyle, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Emma Goldman, Alexander Graham Bell, just to mention a few. Yannick, who plays Murdoch is as handsome as can be, and his constable associate George is funny and entertaining(he often steals the show). The ME is a woman, and currently embroiled in some suffragette activities. And the Inspector of the station is also very well played. They just started season 7 on Sat night on Ovation. But during the day they repeat older episodes, and season 5 and 6 are available on cable onDemand if you receive Ovation (it is an art channel). We are totally hooked on this show... totally! The show is beginning to "modernize" which dilutes the history a bit. So if you can find older seasons, before #7....you'll see a slightly more Victorian setting. |
thanks mrsd
we would have to watch it from season one and am not that sure we would do that. sounds good though! glad that you enjoy it! bizi |
We came in at season 5... you really can watch them jumbled up..
some of the story lines go thru a couple of episodes, or rarely thru a whole season. But the main story in each episode is stand alone for the most part. However, the series does change quite a bit beginning in season 7. I am not sure I like this plot change, and the more modern focus on politics but I did really like season 5 and 6. I haven't seen the earlier ones yet. I imagine Ovation will start the series over eventually. Reading IMDB, the series was cancelled at the end of season 4, but somehow was resurrected to continue. Its vintage appearances including all the medical props are just fascinating to me. I've been buying modestly some vintage pharmaceutical things, on Ebay, and I saw some of the items, that I have collected! In some episodes Murdoch has a mortar and pestle on his desk.;) The writing is very good...and sometimes hysterically funny. |
