Alffe 06-17-2007 07:38 AM

What's on your plate?

Off to a great start..:o I thought it was Monday so took my once weekly fosamax and learned from Mr.Alffe that it's Sunday!

Probably because we went to the Praise Service at church last evening instead to this mornings regular one. Not sure how I feel about people wearing shorts in the sanctuary.....another sign that I'm getting old and cranky. :p

It's going to be in the 90's again today...hope I don't wear out our pump watering the grass seed. Curious could you send us some of that rain?

We had a late supper last night...Mr.Alffe cooked some kind of meat on the grill...the butcher assured me it was tender and it wasn't so we ate a lot of salad.

And what are you all up to???..........

Wren 06-17-2007 08:04 AM

(if I write... I feel like I'm boring or offensive or something .....but I want to talk so very much )
I've gone back to that cleaning house frenzy. I'm emptying closets. Sister and her husband are coming and bringing their truck instead of car. Their neighborhood is having an annual yard sale Friday so they have a great chance to help me. I'm even dumping vast amounts of clothes.
The kitchen cabinets I simply cleaned are now empty. A neighborhood woman came and took a vast amount of books.
It feels good to be rid of stuff.

KathyM 06-17-2007 08:16 AM

Hope the yard sale goes well Wren.

Yep - it looks like another scorcher today. I think my husband is going to take me to a river in Michigan and toss me in. Nah - we're going fishing. :p

I've been trying to push myself lately. I decided to make up for the humiliating incident with the woman walking home from the train station. I took a walk with my husband up to the park the other night. A group of neighbors have been meeting there after dark with their dogs for a few years now. They are all used to seeing me stumble through the park.

As we approached I noticed a new dog in the crowd, and a woman yelled out my name - but used my MAIDEN name. HUH? We went to school together - from kindergarten through high school! She's caring for her elderly mother and recently bought the home next to her mom. Sue and I used to play in that park when we were kids. It was nice having her there with us.

Abbie 06-17-2007 08:30 AM

Good Morning Alffe, Wren, and KathyM!!!!!

Looks like it's going to be another HOT  day here...

Not much going on in my little corner of the world... just sitting here listening to the tv in the other room.

My only plans for today... staying out of the heat!!

Wren... Talk away!!! I have never found your words to be boring, offensive or "something".

Alffe... hope the little seedling grass doesn't get burnt in this heat!!

Kathy... have fun fishing! Sounds like a nice day!!!! Isn't it great when and old friend comes back into your life!!!

Have a GREAT day all!!!

We're going to church then having lunch with my FIL. Later on this afternoon we'll go to dads grave....We had to take my FIL to the hosptial yesterday morning... we suspected appendicitis but it turned out to be him having a UTI and diverticulitis.... {{{HUGS}}}}

Doody 06-17-2007 10:38 AM

Ask me again later when wake up and find some energy. :thud:

befuddled2 06-17-2007 11:50 AM

Hi Alffe, I sometimes get my days mixed up. I got up to go to church but went back to bed. I was depressed this morning and had that feeling that something bad was going to happen so I hid under the covers.

Wren, please write away anytime. I wish I had your energy to clean today.

Kathy, it's hot here to in VA but for some reason it doesn't feel as hot as they said it was going to be. Lake Michigan huh?

Abbie, staying out of the heat sounds like a plan.

Goofy, thank goodness it was not you FIL appendix.

Doody, I can relate to the energy thing.

My path crossed with my neighbor I had the crush on today when he was getting in his car and I was walking down the parking lot. I said hi and he said hi. Mind you, our hi's were mumbled but non the less we spoke to each other which is a start. I mean, why can't everyone get along after all? We are neighbors and shouldn't have to be ignoring one another.

What am I doing today.... well, listing on eBay is on my plate...

phoned son number 2 (25) - he was going thru the drive-thru with his friend who is a Dad (LOL... my God, things have changed - isn't he supposed to be with his baby and wife or at least with their fathers?...) - my Son's Dad is off fishing for the weekend so that excuses him.

My own Dad is in heaven. He has been gone a long time and altho he played a huge emotional role in my life, he wasn't present in the physical sense.

So today I've touched base with a few friends, watched an interview with Elton John (its still on), watched the wind blow the leaves on the trees (inside out - which means its going to rain), watched people go in and out my building and the one across the street (condos for sale in the $400 thousand dollar range - that's what happens when the Olympics come to your city - outrageous prices), checked my bank account online and gasped, and worked on a blanket I am knitting for a baby (my best friend is a gramma). OH, and I changed the kitty litter and did the dishes! LOL

Nice to touch base with all of you here! xoxoxo :grouphug:

Alffe 06-18-2007 07:37 AM

The coffee was a tad strong this morning so I'm starting the day with a jolt. ;)

I had a pm from an old friend inquiring about another old friend from BT and I had no news to share. It occured to me in the looking that we have no cancer forum here, or specifically breast cancer forum. I did find some posts under Womens Health but men also get breast cancer so that seems a little one sided.

I also couldn't find where one can request new forums...perhaps I'm just missing it.

There was a front page article in yesterdays paper about who is going to pick the fruit crops in Michigan if the migrant workers stay away. It's hot, back breaking work that pays little more than minimum wage. Abundant crops at roadside stands are something we take for granted here...my mouth waters just thinking about them.

Still no rain and too hot to work in the yard other than to move the sprinkler.

I wonder if VDW is packing! *grin

My lists of things to take and do are made though.... the suit cases are out of the shed.... but thats as far as i've gotten. thundering in the distance..... how i wish i had the power to send the rain to those who need it.. we've had 2 consecutive years of drought the past couple years, and i understand what its like to need it and not get it :(.
 vicky

Alffe 06-18-2007 07:58 AM

Thank you Abbie...I've put a request there. :D why don't you come for breakfast...fixing a western omlet for Mr.Alffe and there's plenty. :D

Oh Vick....not another ear infection!!! I hope it doesn't interfere with your trip. Hugs

Abbie 06-18-2007 10:13 AM

Man... just my luck... I missed breakfast again and I LOVE western omlets!!!! I had to get to an appointment.

Vicky... I'm sorry you are feeling well today. I hope you were able to get ahold of your doc and he is able to help you out. Feel better soon!

Abbie

KathyM 06-18-2007 10:56 AM

((Vicky)) - YUCK, I can't stand that feeling! I hope your doc will be able to help.

OMG we had so much fun yesterday! We drove out to the St. Joseph River in Michigan - about 100 miles away.

I've never really been into fishing - why kill a fish when you can have pizza or steak? It's my husband's thing, so I went along. He bought me some overall waders a few years ago, and I thought he was NUTS for thinking I'd ever wear them.

Turns out, I can walk better waist deep in water with a cane than I can on dry ground! I caught a big catfish and a big trout. I didn't know if I'd have the strength to reel them in, but I figured out a way. I thanked them for the thrill, removed the hook, then sent them on their way. Fortunately, only fish with slightly pierced lips got thrown into the river yesterday. :D

Geneva, our Bernese Mountain dog, enjoyed herself too. It was a little cooler in Michigan, and our spot was shaded with a sandy spot. Geneva is a little prissy when it comes to water - doesn't like to get her feet wet. She enjoyed the sand though - dug herself a bed in the cool sand under a tree and parked herself for the day.

People were a little freaked out when they passed by her and she barked to say hello. She's a huge dog (135 lbs) and resembles a bear because of a thyroid disorder - she even walks and grunts like a bear.

We got home late last night, and I felt a little bad that my husband hadn't talked with our son. A few minutes later he called, so he got to wish my husband a happy father's day. It was a good day for him. :)

BJ 06-18-2007 11:04 AM

What's on my plate? I wish it was some of those omelettes. :D

I was planning on sitting outside and reading a new book I bought, A Thousand Splendid Suns. Instead I'm really ticked off right now because the Women's Humane Society won't help me. I looked out my window this AM from my family room and saw 5 little kittens. I set out a trap and just a while ago I heard it close. I caught the mother, not the kittens :( so I had to let her go so she can feed them. I've called a couple animal welfare agencies around here and they won't let me borrow any traps. I asked if they could come out and trap them and they said there's not room....they're overflowing with kittens. So what am I supposed to do, let them die? Even more so I've never seen the mother cat around here before and I know them all. I really think someone is dumping these cats and kittens here knowing that I'll take care of them.

Besides that I've got an angry bunch of bees under my patio table and I have no idea how to get rid of them but I have to because I'm allergic.

Vicky I hope you're feeling better soon and this doesn't interfere with your vacation.

Doody 06-18-2007 04:01 PM

Hey BJ. Do you by any chance have a Veterinarian college nearby? Our's here takes in feral animals, but what they do is neuter and spay them and release them where the feral colonies are -- if nobody wants to adopt them. At least that way they help control the pet population.

That really sucks they can't help! Maybe a farm in your area would be interested? Can you advertise them in a free paper maybe?

On a side note...I can't believe my folks! Yesterday for father's day I gave my dad a nice card and a small photo album filled with pictures of Oscar. He loved it. In the afternoon they showed up with a new 37" LCD HDTV and new TV stand for me because they said I deserved it for being both a father and mother to my daughter as she was growing up.

I found myself getting extremely depressed and sad after that that they would do such a thing. They are definitely not wealthy and struggle as much as any low/mid income seniors! I asked dad to take it back and he told me to forget that! He wanted me to have it.

My old Sony 27" bit the dust and for months I've been watching my little 19" TV and I guess they felt sorry for me, lol.

Alffe 06-18-2007 04:08 PM

Just enjoy it Doody....I'm sure it brought them great pleasure to give it to you.

As you well know, that's just a love demonstration...parents do that. :winky:

BJ 06-18-2007 04:23 PM

I've been calling places all day Doody and so far no luck. The nearest college is the University of Pennsylvania but I'm sure they're going to say I have to trap them first. I've been out side all day and I caught the mother 3 times but not the kittens. Now I haven't seen them for over an hour.

I'm waiting to hear back from 2 places and hopefully they'll help me out. I just hate the thought of them out there alone. But I think they found the food I left in the garage. :D I've filled it 3 times today.

I've done way too much today and I'm hurting badly. :thud:

Hey, enjoy that TV Doody. Like Alffe said I'm sure it was from the heart and you couldn't ask for anything more.

KathyM 06-18-2007 05:29 PM

Doody - Little Oscar wouldn't be here if it weren't for you. Besides, regardless of age or circumstance, it feels good to be able to provide for our kids. I can see why that little cutie was named after his grandpa. Your dad sounds like a great man.

BJ - Tough situation with those kittens. The way they breed, they could become a major nuisance in no time at all.

It's a shame a vet school or the Humane Society can't help you out with this. Maybe you should get ahold of that cable TV show "Animal Cops" and have them do a kitty round-up :p

Alffe 06-18-2007 05:30 PM

OMG we had so much fun yesterday...drove out to the St.Joseph River :o ok, so I just failed quoting. Maybe I should just stick with copying pasting.

Wanted to say to KathyM that you were fishing in the same river that runs through South Bend....it's where the St. Joseph River bends to the south....get it? :D Anyway, I'm glad you had fun and your dog sounds fabulous...Cooper would love him.

Curious 06-18-2007 06:05 PM

sadness :(

we have horrible flooding here in north texas. so much destruction and loss of life.

it hit the same town close to me that was recently hit by a tornado.

the news keep showing a precious 4 yr old angel who swept from her mother's arm.

my heart is broken.

Alffe 06-18-2007 06:10 PM

I'm so sorry ....seems like that's all I say to you anymore dear friend. :grouphug:

Curious 06-18-2007 06:16 PM

ty alffe.

it's times like this, that even my own problems seem so minor.

where julie and i live...we got 4 inches of rain. some got over 8. all from one storm that hit at about 2am.

hey bj...does any of your local tv staions have a message board? like a fox staion? you can post about the kitties..and i bet you will get help.

:grouphug:

Julie 06-18-2007 07:41 PM

We got between five and ten inches depending on whose rain gauge on the street didn't blow all the water out. We had six feet of water on our street and knock on wood, it only made it halfway up our yard. Three neighbors weren't so lucky with as much as seven inches of water. We stayed down there until 6:15 helping rip out carpet. Of course since we don't live in a flood plain, there is no insurance. One water remediation wanted 15K just to come out to suck out the water...not rip up the carpet or repair anything. One family had just spent about 50K putting in new carpets and wood floors. Six cars were swamped and all of our trash cans/recycle bins were swept away and the trash is everywhere. Please keep all of them in your prayers.

Alffe 06-19-2007 07:32 AM

I can hardly fathom that much rain from one storm..:( I'm glad you and yours are safe. :grouphug:

Wren 06-19-2007 08:38 AM

I'm so sorry for all of you about that storm. How horrible :(
We're all praying for you.

Doody 06-19-2007 02:10 PM

Prayers going up for you. You guys and that horrible flooding, the 9 firemen, the missing pregnant momma. Lord. I'm going home after work and I think just go straight to bed.

KathyM 06-19-2007 02:44 PM

((Curious and Julie))

Doody - I agree. So much tragedy and human suffering on the news. My heart and prayers go out to the families effected by this.

My ex-husband was a Chicago firefighter. They lost two men from their station in a highrise fire, and I knew them well. The first was a rookie who got off on the wrong floor and fell down an elevator shaft. The second was Joe, a very dear man who was only months away from retirement. He went in later to look for the rookie, but ended up making the same mistake. It felt like we lost family members.

My ex was a jerk of a husband, but I have the utmost respect for firemen. He enjoyed saving people, and didn't hesitate to risk his life to do so. How tragic to lose nine in one single warehouse fire. :(

We also have a woman (wife/mother) out here who has been missing for over a month now - Lisa Stebic. It makes no sense that she would take off and leave her children. Hate to say it, but I suspect the husband (hope I'm wrong). I feel so bad for those children. :(

I understand now why my husband feels the need to take an occasional break to watch SpongeBob. Maybe I'll go blow bubbles and see if I can make a Giraffe. :D

Julie 06-23-2007 09:38 AM

The city was out here and they determined that the water was not six feet deep but by measuring the water line on the houses and the fences, it was eight to twelve feet deep. The city has determined (by placing a camera down the storm drains) that the pretty lakes are to blame. The storm drains are supposed to empty in them and they are all clogged up and the lake level is too high. The water that tried to empty in there just flowed right back because the water couldn't get through the water.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...e/HPIM0285.jpg

Alffe 06-23-2007 09:53 AM

A picture really is worth a thousand words! :( what are they going to do with the "pretty lakes" so it doesn't happen again?

Doody 06-23-2007 05:06 PM

OMG Julie! I remember when it flooded here in '94. It was all over the news.

We had tornadoes yesterday and the day before though I haven't hear any reports of damage. There is a tornado siren just right next to where I live and I shot to shelter in heartbeat. I've been in 3 destructive tornadoes in my life, and when I looked out the window Thursday evening I knew it wasn't good. Luckily, they didn't touch down in town.

I hope you and your's are okay.

Wren 06-23-2007 07:09 PM

:( Julie - OMG - So bad and so sad that something that horrible can happen in an area that's NOT a flood zone. What on earth can be done? What can be done? I'm so sorry that this has happened to you.

Addy 06-23-2007 10:34 PM

Having lived through a massive flood in the 60's, I recall the feeling of helplessness
I was in my early teens. I remember the fear as I tried to run home through the streets of our small downtown area - I couldn't make it and had to to be boated out - thankfully, I was with family.
..................

Now I actually live in one of the world's known rainforests - near Stanley Park in Vancouver, BC. We don't suffer floods because we are by the ocean but it sure rains a lot. It affects everyone's moods. (If Scrabble is reading this - I know she can relate as she's across the water from me) ....
We are a walking neighbourhood so you see a lot of umbrellas and its sometimes difficult to pass by ... sigh, the least of our worries... :rain:

Floods are so devastating... my heart goes out to you and all....
