Doctor Who

I grew up watching some Tom Baker when PBS programming bled over from programs as a child.

My wife is a bit of a Whovian, so it brought me back into the fold. I am enraptured with Peter Capaldi's take. I am excited for the next season.

Anyone else ready?

KnowNothingJon 08-24-2015 01:29 PM

No Doctor Who fans?!??!?

Hey Jon,
I watched it in the late 60s. :)
Most of it was still showing here in Australia in black and white even though the film was in colour because we didn't have colour television. I quite liked it in black and white, especially those old daleks. It also originally had an "A" rating, meaning at that time it was only suitable for adults which is quite hilarious I think. I'm surprised I was allowed to watch it.

There's an interesting but very long wiki page about Doctor Who in Australia describing what they call "the history and culture" of the show in Australia since January 1965. Some of it is quite funny with decriptions of the film being shipped from city to city after it originally aired. It was very BIG here.

Hi Jon,

Missed your Post first time, sorry. I am a huge Dr Who fan, Classic and Modern.

Of the Classics, Tom Baker was my Favourite, but I watched them all. Moderns, Ecclestone was the best, Smith grew into the role, Tennant had good storylines. Capaldi is different, much older, as were the 2 original Doctors William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton.

I reserve judgement until a second Season and a Christmas Special.

Dave.

Capaldi time!

woohoo! I can't wait for the premiere tonight!

EnglishDave 09-19-2015 04:15 PM

Ooh, they are showing it there on the same night we get it!!!

I have recorded it so I can watch in peace.

Did you see the 2 minute Teaser Prologue?

Thanks for the link, I'm checking it out now. I picked up some special snacks for tonight.

I really am fond of his take and I can't wait to see hiw the 12th Doctor grows.

Hmmmm! Interesting storyline. Look forward to seeing how the Capaldi Doctor deals with this dilemma - it may define him.

Always good to see the greatest enemy back.

Dave.

The teaser for next week has me concerned he is crossing a line, but I am guessing it is not the case. I am being obtuse on purpose in case someone who is interested in watching has yet to see the episode.

I liked it, but plan to watch again as the second half of it felt a tad off to me.

KnowNothingJon 09-27-2015 06:54 PM

Interesting. I wonder if they should allow another writer in at some point, though, just to break it up a bit.

EnglishDave 09-28-2015 10:35 AM

There are other writers involved, including Toby Whithouse and Mark Gatiss. I agree these changes will be needed.

As for Part 2, very much 'In a single bound, he was free…' writing.

Dave.

Ugh, these two parters. I really hope they throw me a curve, because I think I see where this is going.

My major issue with these two parters is the natural cliffhanger. Enough of it, already. It is so Pavlovian at this point, both the bell and the response.

We shall see, though.

My daughter, who is nine has taken to watching the first half of some episodes with us. She won me over for the opening shot, when we paused.

I had checked bbcamerica.com earlier in the day and recalled it had some sort of ghost/being hunted by ghosts theme. Off to bed with her.

No one was going to enjoy the episode with her watching.

I was correct, too.

Besides the cliffhanger I enjoyed it, though.

KnowNothingJon 10-15-2015 11:53 PM

Part 2 different writer!

I liked it. It was nice.

I still dislike cliffhangers...

EnglishDave 10-17-2015 11:17 AM

I enjoyed the episode, saw the resolution of the cliffhanger coming.

Looking forward to the return of River Song. The dynamic between that character and Capaldi's Doctor should be interesting.

Eye boogers?

Weakest Capaldi episode by a mile, er kilometer.

I found portions okay, but easily the weakest episode of his run.

EnglishDave 11-20-2015 01:27 PM

Not caught up quite yet, will lower expectations further - my sister found it laughable, but she is a cynic.

In other news: Tennant/Tate as Doctor 10/Donna returning in 3 audio episodes 2016.

Dave.

KnowNothingJon 12-03-2015 07:32 AM

Oh my. Who knewthat eye boogers would be a sorbet of sorts to break up the heavy, weighty meal.
