Just Wondering Now

Is the stiffness and burning pain in my right foot all OA issues or PN too. My foot/ankle OA started to hit me about 6 yrs ago and got worse with hip job when knee got worse (shorter leg) and everything just got worse.

In the last couple months or so foot pain in toes would wake me up when sleeping. It would last a short time usually, I would rub my foot and even add some topicals.

Last night the pain in toes woke me up 3 times during night and wouldn't end. I rub it each time the pain came on. Then I thought is this neuropathy.

This horrid pain doesn't come up while I'm up and drinking water etc...but at night when sleeping and not drinking water during the night...except for a little now and then.

As I said I'm now wondering about this foot numbness and pain. Maybe it's both OA and PN....

My PN first began in my big toes, also waking me up several times in the middle of the night with severe stabbing pain. This then progressed very quickly up legs and now affecting fingers, wrists and arms. I have idiopathic PN but my symptoms coincidentally began 2 days following a lumbar epidural steroid injection. Hope this helps.

It could be both. I have had a lousy run of sleep lately, just lousy. I hope we both see a better swing!

What does OA mean?

Well, it's 3 nights since that "burning" pain I reported about. It has not returned at all. So it's a bit of a mystery now but I'm glad it didn't return again. We'll see as time goes on.

I'm using a Comfrey ointment on feet so maybe that's doing something good.

What is Comfrey cream? Are you using it for PN or OA?

DL, here is a good overview of comfrey and it's uses.

I'm using it for PAIN. Whatever is ailing me, I'm using it. It calms my pain.

I'm actually going to be working with a comfrey homeopathic soon primarily for OA pain.

It's called Symphytum Officinale. I've talked about it somewhere here.

Last night the burning pain hit me again in right foot, hip replacement side of body and all the nerve damage I deal with. What I did was rub my foot with Topricin and then saturate it with tea tree oil and this got me back to sleep, no pain after this.

It happens only at night like 3AM, so I'm thinking more, it's neuropathy as well as arthritis which I know for sure, but this burning in toe area now sounds like neuropathy. So Topricin and Tea Tree Oil. TTO has become one of my new best friends.

....

Hi Caroline. I don't think it has anything to do with drinking or not drinking water during the night as long as you are adequately hydrating yourself during the day.

I have read so many reasons for symptoms occurring more at night including: having no distractions, carbon dioxide levels, lactic acid build up, temperature changes at night effect peripheral nerves and others. I have some symptoms that now only occur in the middle of the night. I am pretty sure others would concur.

I mentioned this toe pain to the chiro I'm seeing once a week now and she wanted me to pinpoint the toes and explained it could be piraformis syndrome. My whole side from that muscle down to my toes have been affected due to hip surgery. She is going to work on the piraformis area next week. She said IF it happens again to try to note if I was laying on my right side which is my messed up side of body. I thought this was pretty astute observation on her part.

Well, the toe pain/burning has been continuing since I started this post but for the last 3 nights the pain/burn has not been coming on. Wonder if it's the Alfalfa (chlorophyll) I'm taking now for little over a week. I have a separate post on this treatment. Time will tell if the pain/burn returns.
