Vitamin D3 and MS

High doses of vitamin D dramatically cut the relapse rate in people with multiple sclerosis, a study shows.

Thanks for posting the article, Kitty. My D level was at 92 when my neuro said "Stop taking so much!". Was taking 5000ius a day, went down to 5000ius twice a week. I don't know what my level is now. Too bad the article didn't mention individual levels, only doses.

Hard for me to comment on the reported benefits. I'm not one to relapse. Is the Vitamin D I take part of that? Could be!

barb02 12-14-2015 10:59 AM

I take 2000 a day. I am going to ask my primary care docotr to have it checked when i see for an appointment in late January. It was below 20 when I was first diagnosed and the last time I had it checked it was only 29, when taking 1000 a day.

Kitty 12-14-2015 11:47 AM

This article was written in 2009 so even 6 years ago they were talking about the good effects of D3 on MS.

I'm not sure why there hasn't been more research on this seemingly simple way to help control MS. Oh wait.......Big Pharma is probably scared that if something natural and easy to use is uncovered their profits will be severely cut. Now I don't know if that's true or not but given Big Pharma's track record and the slew of horrible side effect meds they're pushing on us all the time I'd say that's it's more likely than not that they have their hand in the cookie jar.:mad:

I am beginning this week to take 20,000 IU's per day of D3. I will have my levels checked routinely and will cut back if my 25(OH)D levels get too high.

SallyC 12-15-2015 03:44 PM

I should probably take extra D3, cause of my lack of sun rays. :confused
Who am I kidding. Too late to reverse any damage to my old MS body. LOL!

Starznight 12-15-2015 10:48 PM

My doctor put me on D3, but I ended up suffering with severe side-effects (toxicity to it) so we dropped it down, then down again, then down again.... back to drinking my milk everyday. My body just does not like taking vitamins :(

I had my vitamin D checked and it was just a little low so I've been taking an OTC supplement. I have to laugh because my two sisters who don't have MS have super low vitamin D and have to take large supplements.

EddieF 12-19-2015 03:42 PM

I took 10,000iu per day for a month or 2, swear ms felt more stabil, my level was 120. Liquid pill form i always take.

Doc told me organ failure can happen if level approaches 200 so i take 5000iu per day & stay in the 80's. Everybody absorbs more/less plus i'm tan almost all yr. Love the south.

SallyC 12-20-2015 12:41 PM

Hi Eddie. I used to take a bunch of D3 n felt better too. Never did have my
level checked. Stopped it and most supplements, when all hell broke loose here
A few months ago!!!

I do 4000U a day but I work nights and don't see the sun all winter living in the northeast except when it's 60 degrees and sunny like it is right now!

I just had blood work done for my thyroid and asked if they would check my Vitamin D levels, too. I haven't gotten the results back yet but when I do I'll post them here!

Thought you guys might want to see this: http://multiplesclerosisnewstoday.co...get-new-study/ if you haven't already.

My level was about 30, and I got it up to 77 by taking 10,000 IU a day for about 8 months. I don't think that article I linked to said so, but I've read elsewhere that you want to get your level up to something close to 100 but not over. And anything under 30 is too low.

Where's mrsD? I'd have thought that she'd be all over this thread--she's all about the D! :sunchair:

Got my test results back and my D level is 85. Doctor said that was good.

My thyroid med (Nature Thyroid) has been doubled! I now take two 97.5 mg tablets first thing in the morning.

mrsD 01-25-2016 04:58 PM

Hi there Joan...

The MS doctors try to get their MS patients to a value of 100.
But as with all medical things, this may change, so be alert to
that.

For nonMS folks 50 is considered the new goal. My doctor wanted me at 70, but I never made that milestone.

I use 5000 IU D3 daily. Except for summer when I get tanned up.
Last summer I didn't get out much, so I took the 5000 the whole year 2015.

That's awesome Kitty! Good for you!

I was D deficient and after a year and a half got it up to 65 or 70 using 5000iu. At that point my Neurologist said to drop my dosage down to 2000iu, within 6 months my D level dropped to 19.

I have tried 3000iu then 4000iu and now 5000iu and so far my D level is not going above 27. I have only been at the 5000iu for approximately 3 months so I am hoping when it's rechecked it will have increased. We shall see

Kitty, so you are taking just under 200mg NT? I'm taking 135mg of NT or NP Thyroid which is SO MUCH like the original armour I started with in 2002. NP is now considered the generic for Armour and much less $$$ and they produce it in GA. Armour has gone up in price so much since the company changed owners and they changed the formulation over the years and I didn't like it. I chew my NT or NP.

I felt best at 80 on the Vit D I remember that time and then the hip job and it dropped 40 pts so I've been working my way up over the years since surgery. I know the surgery took a lot out of me and created more pain overall.

How are you doing and feeling MS-wise?

K2 is supposedly important for best D3 absorption. I take both.

I need to get new labs on a couple things in the spring as I didn't do labs last year at my annual.
