Healthy Diet is IKCY

As a result of having CRPS, I have been eating quite healthily. I only have one problem. Every once in a while I allow myself to eat whatever I want. When I do this, my body is so used to eating right that I just don't feel well physically for a day or so after I eat that way. Outside of giving up completely on "freely" eating, do any of you know how to do this without feeling so yucky afterwards?

Healthy diet is ICKY

I can not say that I have any good recommendations, other than try looking at some of the ingredients of things that you eat on your "free" days. The more natural the diet, and the more ingredients that are in it that your body is used to, the easier it is for your body to break things down. Your body has become unfamiliar with things that you may have cut out, or cut back on, such as hydrogenated oils, complex sugars, red meats, whatever you have cut back on, that it just does not know what to do with them. As a result, you feel bloated, sick to your stomach, lethargic...

I'm not sure if that helps at all. Hope you are still having a decent day.

Same thing happens to me...I can tell when I cheat on my 4 Fs diet...which usually happens when I am unable to make food for myself because of pain...making me actuallly feel even worse...vicious cycle. I will say I am not the most strict on the diet and allow myself a few freedoms but selective ones so that it doesn't hit me like having a full on cheat day does.

Those bad pain days are the hardest to eat correctly during. What is worse is when the bad pain day hits, and the cupboard is bare. I don't keep a lot of junk food in the house, but, when those bad pain days occur I grab anything that is quick and close.

I have a question: How does your little one deal with the reality of your having CRPS? and.. Please, if you'd rather not answer, I certainly understand.

catra121 02-27-2016 10:37 PM

We don't have hardly any junk food in the house usually...amybe tortilla chips and popcorn most days. What happens to me is that I end up ordering food...usually from dominos or some place like that and the food is definitely not good for me and my RSD.

I used to love piZZa. It doesn't agree with me at all anymore. And flare ups! whoa! Big time after I eat that stuff.

I try to eat healthy but like everyone else on the bad days I just eat whatever is easiest to prepare.

I love soup and I love my crock pot so on days I am feeling better I make a huge pot of soup. I separate it into at least 4 portions and freeze them so all I have to do is take it out of the freezer and heat it up. This morning I pulled out some chicken noodle soup for dinner.

Interesting that you mention this...in January I started making frozen crock pot meals. I order all the ingredients from PeaPod to be delivered to the house for 6-10 meals. Then I prep them into gallon size freezer bags, freeze them, and then each morning I toss one in thhe crock pot for lunch/dinner that day. It's taken some time but I have found meals that are really easy to prep and have found that I can make 2 days of crock pot meals then have leftovers for a day or two, etc. So 7 or 8 meals easily last about 2 weeks for us. I started this mostly because I found myself ordering out food for not just me...but the baby too and that's not how I want her to eat. So the crock pot meals ensure she is eating better and me too.

The only problems with this are that 1) the prep takes a lot out of me so I have had to not make certain meals a second time because the prep was too much, 2) if I run out of freezer meals and I don't feel up to prepping that can result in ordering out again, 3) sometimes I don't even feel up to heating up leftovers, and 4) washing the crock pot is a painful task each morning. But...it's working out a lot better than anything else I've tried and everyone in the house is eating better most of the time. I will definitely continue this and can see where once I get back to work it will be especially helpful because after a day of work I really don't feel up to any cooking.

I find that moderation is key for me. And sometimes this is so hard! I can handle small amounts of the foods that I flare on if I choose just one or really minimize it. A full smorgasboard causes too much trouble.

Though I did make the choice to enjoy ALL the things that set me off out at dinner around New Year's at this fabulous little Italian taverna. And boy was it good! :D

Spike, I am very curious what happens when you eat pizza if you don't mind sharing. This sets me off too. So unfair!

I am lucky that in Austin we have both Whole Foods and several little places nearby that have healthy meals ready to go, so when I know I'm not going to feel like cooking (ketamine, scar injections, crummy day, so many reasons) I get prepared or send my hubby by....:)

I bought disposable crock pot liners once and I have been hooked ever since! It has made things so much easier.

Because I am such a Pinterest junkie I have so many recipes. I have Weight Watchers, vegetarian, Paleo, and anything else you can think of. I was just going over my recipes yesterday while trying to come up with a grocery list for my husband. I love him but he is not a good cook!

I may have to look into those liners to make my life easier. The first time I did the big shopping list for meals I sent my boyfriend to the store with a list. Big mistake...I was grilled on why I needed each ingredient and then spent a good 30 mins on the phone with him while he was at the store talking about pineapple juice...lol. Peapod grocery delivery works much better and is actually cheaper since I can sort ingredients by price.

I have thought about using PeaPod. I have to force myself to get up and go to the grocery store, due to pain, which is hard. I think it is pretty hip to drive around those carts up and down the aisles though. Verrrroooom, veroooooooom..... Can't get any of the staff there to race against me though. Kind of bums me out.

They look like clear plastic bags, almost like the oven bags, and I couldn't imagine not using them.

I never thought about using Peapod but I will have to look into it. My husband does a pretty good job when it comes to shopping, as long as I give him a list. But he's a firefighter so he works 24 hour shift and he has been working overtime so he is pretty busy.

When my son was sick I used PeaPod a LOT. Best thing ever! I wish they had it where I currently live.

With my daughter getting ready to move back to TN, I collected a binder of recipes and my mom, my daughter & I pre-made them and froze them in single servings so I can easily make something on my own. Took almost all day, ~$200 but I have ~40-50 meals all ready to throw in the oven/crock pot/microwave. Of course I haven't actually tried them yet...we don't want to waste them while she's still here and can cook :p

I've had to pretty much give up wheat and gluten and most grains. I totally love them and miss them, but they ultimately made me feel awful! It took me probably a decade or more to figure this out. Maybe try a gluten free pizza crust, or actually I usually use gluten free tortillas as the base as they have fewer calories. You can still put all the yummy toppings on, but you don't have the wheat (or additives) that may be stressing your system. Hope that helps :)

You know, I've been thinking. Wouldn't it be such a shame *SMIRK* for your mom to have to rush home right away after she left after spending time with you. I mean, think about it. Why not zip on over and see Spike, make him- Oh, let's say- 80 to 100 meals- and then head on home afterwards? Doesn't that sound like a GREAT idea?

GRIN

(Now, on the serious side: Wow, smart move on your part. I bet those are going to taste great. I truly am so very happy for you. I find it very difficult to cook or make something to eat, when I'm hurting. You were so very smart! Way to go!)

I've tried the gluten free stuff. I'd rather not eat the grain based meals in that case. I just can't do the gluten free. I don't like the taste.

Thanks everyone for all these great ideas - think I'm going to have to buy a crock pot for this winter - easier than the large saucepan I currently use. Sadly don't think I'll be able to get those disposable liners down here in NZ.

Re the flare-ups from Pizza - it may be due to the tomato sauce - ie: concentrated tomato - tomato is from the nightshade family of plants. Also a lot of commercial tomato paste is imported in bulk from China and then repackaged for supply in the US - you never know what might be in it eg: MSG.

I would be happy to send her your way! Be warned: she's an almost 80 year old farm girl raised by a German mother who is also the wife of an alcoholic (aka She isn't afraid to speak her mind and does so often :winky:)

I actually put all my recipes on my 'regular' blog :D

My goodness. Hmmm.. Imagine that. I seem to be suffering from short term memory loss due to CRPS. What was my address again? Oh it all seems just so far out of the way for her! I mean, it is so slippery with the ice and snow and such, as a person moves from place to place during the winter. Oh, And the candy gram lady lives 2 doors down, so there is that to think about. Oh well, and I certainly don't want to put your mom out any! Oh, and then there is the neighbors dog. You know, the one that wags it's tail and licks people. So there is that to think about. Oh and Hey, you know what? It's good. It's all good. he he. cough.. I'm good.. I'm good. See you in Miami Mom of Always Believe. Enjoy! Be Good!

knottywheelz 03-10-2016 01:57 AM

Hey Spike,

I literally have pretty much the same exact issues. I completely changed up my diet by eating much healthier, not such big portions and not eating till I felt full. At first I cut out junk foods, soda, fast foods, etc. Then slowly once in awhile I would treat myself but with much smaller portions than before. But man, when I cheat and treat myself to something, I am almost immediately regretting it. No need to go into detail, since we have all had our share of these occurances, lets just say that I have spent way too many nights on the floor from the nausea(which has been pretty frequent for me). But I am a foodie, through and through. Always have been and always will be. However now, I really try to either have very little of that "cheat treat" or try to replace it with something else thats similar. Honestly for me its a difficult battle because I have other stomach/complexities that add to it.
I do wonder sometimes if I have a problem with gluten, that maybe something you also want to look into as I have been.
But I will say that a huge help has been Peppermint Tea. Hot or cold. I like to buy it in its natural form(crushed up dryed leaves/stems), I also grow it in my home and outside garden, so that I always have it in the house. Plus it has some other positive benefits for your internal systems. Just add honey or sugar, but I find that the honey has a better affect.
I also began smoking medical marijuana(which I absolutely feel helps tremendously, especially when the pain and or nausea is just way to much to bare)as well as making butter and oil to cook with my food.
So if you are a tea person, I would definitely give this a try, do a little experiment or a few. Especially before and after you eat those "cheat treats." Hopefully you find some relief.
