New Friend, but concerned
 

Hi Friends,

I just got a precious little dog from the pound 4 days ago. It is part Schnauzer and part Poodle (Schnoodle).

They found her wandering around. She is very thin probably due to not eating, but is sweet as can be. SHe will just sleep in your lap for hours and cuddle with you.

I took her to the vet yesterday to have her checked out. The vet said she figured her to be around 4 years old.

She said she did show signs of whipworm in her stools and they put her on some medication. Other than that they said she looked healthy.

She started though yesterday having direahea really bad and now she just won't eat at all.

I don't know if maybe that is due to changing her food as to what she was eating in the shelter, or not.

Does anyone have any ideas on what you can do to treat direahea in dogs?

I read on the internet that it is important to make sure they are drinking water, which she is some. They also said you can add chicken boullion to it. Has anyone done or heard of that?

Any Advice?

I am just crazy about this little thing and I only hope she is not sick.

If the worm infestation was real bad the meds can cause a die off of them and that may cause the diarrhea :( .

If it lasts more than a day or 2 or is very severe- check back with the vet.

diet really can cause digestive upsets and dogs (as well as cats) can also have allergies and food intolerances, just like us

I suspect one of our kitties to be celiac/gluten intolerant and he cant eat any of the store type petfoods. I order special stuff for him on the web

Our JR Terrier Millie had a very sensitive digestion...and skin! and could only eat very specific things..she got ill from even a tiny amount of turkey or lamb and was best with chicken and beef dried food (she couldnt handle any wet food well) and table scraps of salmon, (which she really loved)

since my kitty got so ill, and the subsequent dietary changes I have made have so improved his health, food intolerance is the first thing I consider.

ps I agree re a trip to the vet if it doesnt stop in a day or two as they can sometimes give a shot or meds to stop if it is bacterial rather than just worm stuff

Hi ((Peggy)). First of all BLESS YOUR HEART for adopting a pound puppy!

I haven't had any animals with whipworm so I don't have firsthand knowledge of that. The last dog I had, when my daughter was little and while she was growing up, was from a pound. She had horrible...oh now I forget! lol She had terrible diarrhea that they called something pound something. It was common for dogs to catch this (whatever it was) resulting in diarrhea.

Whipworms sound just awful from what I've just been reading on the internet. They are long-lasting little stinkers as well and it sounds like your angel will need to have this treatment periodically to get rid of them.

I hope these links help a little, but yes, I agree with the others...call your vet right away tomorrow and ask them about this. I'm wondering if it may be a reaction to the medicine working and starting to kill those buggers in her intestines. Apparently they reside in the large intestine and their cycles are very long.

Chicken and Rice is good for diarrhea in dogs - give them a bland diet for three or four days and then slowly put them back on dog food. Good Luck!

Hi Everyone,

I'm sorry it has taken me awhile to get back to you. Just alot going on in life these days.

My little Tiffany is doing so good since she started on her meds for the whipworms.

She eats so good, is happy and looks to be gaining weight. We can only hope it doesn't come back

She has a repeat of meds on July 27th and then on Sept. 1st.

She is the best little dog I have ever had. So lovable.

Hi Peggy, I just joined this Neurotalk and since I "love" animals (especially dogs) I went to our pets and read about yours. I hope she is well and doing well. One of my two just walked over for some lovin-she's a "little" larger than yours-probably by 50 lbs;) and her sister by 65 lbs:wink: and they are my 8yr old babies :D We, also, saved ours...Thank you for being a caring person.
