How is everyone doing now that it is hot???

I just thought I would check in on everyone and see how everyone's doing with this horrible heat...I know I keep my home at 72 and usually have a fan blowing in my direction. I do have a cooling vest but have discovered it is no help in this heat. Twenty minutes in this heat of coastal southeast Georgia with my vest and I am done for 2 more days.

I certainly hope everyone is doing okay. :grouphug:

Hi bddouglas,

I've been in Georgia in summer, and the heat is beastly there!

Not much heat here just now (in Oregon) but there was a hot spell with temps around 100' for a couple of days. It can get like that here at times.

After many years of trying to avoid the heat, nowadays I mostly stay home and do nothing and hide from it when it hits. Luckily I have good fans and even air conditioning. All set as long as I don't go anywhere or try to do much.

Starznight 06-16-2016 03:06 PM

The heat is killing me, I'm also here in southeast ga, the heat isn't even the worst of it, but it's sooo humid and no breezes :(. Even the pool we bought for the GB is more like a hot tub right now, so it isn't helping to cool anyone down. I never thought I'd be happy for a sick GB but at least it's keeping her inside during the heat. The poor thing got dehydrated at some point and mommy's diet of quick foods and not much liquids got a blockage started in her little belly :(.

She's still bouncing and running around, doctor's cure for it is lots of juices, fruit and whole grains. No cheese, milk, bread or processed foods. Which works great for while she's at my house. In this heat about all I want to eat is fruit and salads. Nothing cooked... Too hot for it. But I do worry about the GB when she goes back home to mommy. My DSD doesn't have much money nor experience in budgeting so getting the kid what she needs at home, I find myself sending the GB home with little baggies of fruit and veggies from the garden.

i live in FL & have to be very careful in the heat. i need to do things in the AM & schedule appts early in the day. i drink a lot & also find that cooling collars work well.

if i don't plan well i can get almost paralyzed. i get very weak & fatigued.
my vision can even change. it's just bad. and, running too many errands where i have to get in & out of the car is bad for me.

take care out there guys. ps....walmart has these cooling collars & i thought they used to be about 5 or 6 dollars.

tkrik 06-16-2016 08:38 PM

I too have the a/c set to 72!!! I even drop it down to 70 sometimes. Of course, I'm so afraid of it freezing up on me though. :( I have 1 ceiling fan and 2 stand alone fans. I have them running too. Well, I turn the living room fans off at night and turn the fan in my bedroom on when I go to bed. I also have been showering before bed as it cools me down and helps me sleep better. I have been doing that for a while now and it really helps.

I am now in hibernation and will come out only if necessary. :D

Kitty 06-17-2016 04:24 AM

I'm in GA and it's been in the mid 90's here for the past week. This weekend is supposed to be cooler (mid 80's) with lower humidity. I have been staying inside. I even cancelled an appt I had yesterday because of the heat. :thud:

Starznight 06-17-2016 03:36 PM

Up to 98 degrees here, not including the heat index... so I have a very unhappy and ancient kitty who wants to go out to play but is being kept inside for the day. Funny how it's not only myself that needs to hibernate from the cold but, I have to force it on my 17 year old cat as well :p. Well just what 6 more months of this and we'll be into December where it might be a little cooler... Praying for an early and freezing winter :p

bddouglas 06-17-2016 11:18 PM

I didn't even go out to check the mail today. I stepped out into the garage to wash a load of clothes and then put them in the dryer. By the time the dryer was done, I was not going to step into the garage so my 7 year old grandson brought them in from the dryer.

Everyone take care with this and the worsening upcoming heat as summer peaks. My son and my significant other have told me that I should not be going out with out one of them in this heat. They are worried I will have real memory and vision problems, I guess.

Here's to cooler temps in about 5 or 6 months.

I don't know about you but my vision problems get very much worse in the heat, and my mind turns to mush too. I sometimes wonder if I'm overdoing my dislike of heat when I cross a street just to get to a bit of shade on a hot day, then cross the same street again to find a bit of shade on the other side.

Then I remember what heat does to me, and I don't have to be in it long at all.<---sunglasses somehow make it seem a bit cooler

:Viking:<---wearing a hat is supposed to help too but the hat itself is hot though the brim does create some shade.

I find that staying inside in the a/c helps the most. :D:D

You are right, a hat is supposed to help but it does make my head hotter. The same is true for cooling vests, at least for me. When I was on Copaxone I'd save the ice packs that came as part of the packaging. I used to bring them with me everywhere. They last a while.

I did that too--they were very handy.

I wore my hat out today for the first time this year--and regretted it. It did prevent the sun from baking my head but as soon as I got home and took it off I realized how hot my head was getting anyway.

bddouglas 07-02-2016 09:50 AM

Hats often make me feel the heat more. I have begun carrying a cane with me everywhere, we all know we never know what to expect when MS and the heat clash. It is in the mid to high 90's on a daily basis without the heat index here. Everyone please take care of yourself in this heat. :grouphug:

Kitty 07-02-2016 10:35 AM

It's oppressively hot here in GA. I haven't been outside for any length of time in a month. It just wears me out.

I have a Neuro appt towards the end of the month and I'm already dreading it.

We haven't had any measurable rain in so long I've forgotten when the last time it rained was. We need rain so badly....the trees and grass are getting crunchy!

I'm nervous for the 4th of July fireworks....especially the ones people get to set off in their driveway or yard. Prime conditions for a fast fire!

agate 07-02-2016 01:23 PM

Summer can be hard on people with disabilities, particularly MS disabilities. So far the summer here has been cool except for a few unspeakably hot days with temps around 100'. There may be more of those days as the summer goes on but for now I'm enjoying days in the 70s and wish I could send them to everyone who is suffering.

I dread the neighborhood fireworks every year. There are houses all around the building I live in and some of the residents in those houses just LOVE their fireworks. Some are so loud that they sound as if they're right under my windows.

Having diminished hearing helps a little but not much. I still feel the jarring impact of the louder explosions and definitely hear them even without the hearing aids.

I almost jump out of my skin with any loud sudden noise.

Cats I've had have gone into hiding at this season, and around here it is a season, not just a day. The fireworks can go on for weeks.

Public fireworks displays can be lovely, and I've been to some of them. They're well regulated, usually away from pets, and everyone hearing the noise is probably there voluntarily. Nobody will get hurt.

But every year there are news stories about somebody who is badly injured by fireworks.:Soapbox:

bddouglas 07-03-2016 10:18 PM

@Kitty, I wish I could send you some of our rain...Season thunderstorms and downpours pretty much every afternoon and evening...That is part of the beauty of living in southeast GA, the weather changes quickly and often but it does stay hot and humid.

@agate, I hope your temperatures stay milder for you. I am very sensitive to the concussion from the fireworks, I can completely relate. I wear my earplugs, but I will still be left in bed on Tuesday morning with my nerves zapping and jerking from head to toe.

Here's to all of us getting through each day, one day at a time and surviving the heat of the summer. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Independence Day!

I like fall and winter too!! The weather is perfect. Cold doesn't bother me as much as heat.

agate 07-12-2016 10:20 AM

I prefer any season to summer, but winter's cold bothers me too. It just isn't as much of a problem as summer heat.

Fall and spring are great, and I live in an area that often has a long spring.

bddouglas 07-12-2016 03:49 PM

Unfortunately, we often have a very short fall, winter, and spring. Our summer temperatures often range from March to October or into November. I have seen Thanksgiving come with temps in the 80's. December has had temps in the 70's and 80's. Our winter often only lasts a few weeks. No snow, just 30's at night and 40-s-60's during the day.

The heat absolutely drains me and makes me feel like I should be dying. I feel effects from the cold when it's really cold. I have Fibromyalgia, too.

Sparky10 07-12-2016 08:01 PM

A Chilly Towel is very helpful in this heat! Amazon.com : Frogg Toggs Chilly Pad Evaporative, Cooling, Snap Towel : Golf Towels : Sports & Outdoors. Keep it wet in it's container and in the fridge for an extremely refreshing wipe for when you walk in from outside. It it even helpful when wet but not refrigerated, like carried in a car. Just snap it, or shake it hard, and it truly is cooler than just a wet rag.

The link is to Amazon but Walmart carries them as well, both in store and online.

tkrik 07-13-2016 11:01 AM

bddouglas - That's pretty much our weather here. I do like the fall weather as it cools down in the night and the mornings are cool. It's only the afternoons that are rough. Winter is perfect at around 60s to 70s during the day. Spring is like fall. Summer is down right brutal. I posted on the Insights thread about the heat. I think today we are supposed to be in the 110+ degrees. I will not be going anywhere unless it's absolutely necessary. I also posted about this fan that I bought over the weekend. It's a small fan but it definitely moves the air and keeps you feeling cooler. Here's the link: http://www.target.com/p/honeywell-tu...k/-/A-11153539

Sparky - I always forget about those. I may have to get one. I wonder if you can use them as a cooling pad for your bed. Now that would be awesome too.

Sparky10 07-13-2016 07:20 PM

Because it works in an evaporative manner, I'd say it wouldn't be much use as something to lay on, tkrik. It needs air circulation to remain or recharge it's cooling properties. Although just having it near to wipe your skin may help a lot!

Ttkrik, you just reminded me of my childhood summers! As children my brother, sister and I were sent off to Natchez Mississippi for several weeks to spend the summer at Grandma and Granddaddy's. The house was built in the 1840's and was close to original, with no air conditioning. My sister and I shared a big four-poster bed. I remember wetting a towel to lay on; with the fan at the foot of the bed it was cool where the fan blow could across the wet towel, but not underneath me.

Just 6 years ago, almost 7 now, I left that house after living there with my Dad (he grew up there) for 12 years. I live in Iowa now. Sooooo much cooler in the summer!

Hey, thanks for prompting a sweet memory!

I'm glad it brought back some good memories for you.

Several years ago my old boyfriend and I went to Mexico. We stayed in a friend's house. I think we went in July. Anyhow, it was hot as heck and the man didn't have a/c in his house. I didn't know I had MS at the time but knew that heat really bothered me and I would get tremors and blurry vision in the heat. I did something similar as you did with the wet sheets and the fan. It was the only way I could cool down enough to sleep. I love having a/c!!! I am spoiled by it. Heck, we all are.;)

PatriciaQ 08-02-2016 10:34 AM

Praying good thoughts for colder weather :winky:

bddouglas 08-04-2016 11:26 AM

Friends and family trying to keep me inside as much as possible. It has been a few degrees cooler here, but not enough to get out much. Feeling cabin fever, nothing a little retail therapy won't cure.

I know the cabin fever feeling. You are right, shopping total cures that as well as being able to hang out in the a/c at the stores. The frozen food section is a great place to be this time of year. It's full of perimenopausal/menopausal women, thyroid patients, MS patients, and any other patient that can't tolerate the heat.:D:D:D I don't really have money to spend at the store but it really is nice to be in their a/c. It's always cooler in the stores. Movie theaters are great for that too; however, I can't sit for an entire movie. I have to move around.

We had a cold front come through. It was in the 70s/lower 80s! It was such a treat and yet, such a big tease as I know there are at least 3 more months of heat before our brief winter.

Starznight 08-04-2016 11:09 PM

Really feeling the cabin fever here as well, of course being sick isn't helping either. One more doctor's appt hopefully and I should be doing better. If not then it will truly ruin my plans to run away to NH. I can't let this keep me from it so I have been drinking guafensin syrup like it's going out of style, forget the 2 teaspoons every 4-6 hours it's more like a shot glass every hour... It finally seems to be working some though and as yet I haven't ODed on Robitussin :p. If the doctor doesn't have any other ideas tomorrow, I think I'm going to just hang myself upside down in the shower for an hour or two while doing shots of Tussin till everything empties out. Maybe follow it up with a good old fashion mustard plaster or two for good measure.

My poor granddaughter also caught it so she has become a little croaking phlegm machine, when my mom picked her up this morning she was actually covered in phlegm so bad it looked like she had been playing ghostbusters. My mom had to put her fully dressed into the bath so she could get her clothes unstuck and fight with her over keeping a washcloth over her face to get through it all :(. The poor thing, but almost immediately after getting all cleaned up she was bouncing back to her usual self. By this evening when she headed back home to the DSD her voice was back, her attitude was firmly back in place (a few weeks from age 3 so she thinks she is just little miss thang) and she didn't sound nearly as congested.

My fingers are crossed that she is truly on the mend and won't be sick as long as I have been. But this heat and humidity is brutal when sick, add MS into the mix and I'm just done. I actually slept most of the day today and yesterday. I tried to get up, tried to get something to eat and drink at least but it just wasn't happening. I was able to open my eyes long enough to take a drink if something was beside me, chug some more tussin, and then I was out cold again. I actually woke up at one point covered in books and toys that the GB seemed to have thought would make me feel better. (don't worry my mom was there to watch her and well babysit me as well). But my mom was chuckling because at one point I guess the GB had crawled on top of me to make me read her a story. When I didn't listen to what she wanted she pried my eyes open and started hitting me with the book. I slept through that kind of torture.

And even though this is the most awake I've felt in days... I hear the bed calling me once more, so good night!

tkrik 08-05-2016 01:19 PM

Starz - I certainly hope that you can make the trip to NH. It will be a nice break from the heat for you. Also, NH is just beautiful!!! I would love to go on the trip with you!! I'm going to have to go on the trip "cyberly" with you.:D:D

We had a break in the heat but it is due to come back in full force. I am so done with summer. I am hoping that fall/winter (it's the same season here) comes early and lasts longer this year.

doydie 08-09-2016 12:28 AM

It's awful. Heat index in the triple digits. You go into a parking lot and just want to stop since you can't take another step. My van has remote start so I start the car while I am in church, doctor's office, store, etc and it is cool once i get in it. But it's the getting in it that is the problem.

tkrik 08-10-2016 12:49 PM

I am so ready for cooler weather. I rained yesterday and the temps were in the 70s for a bit. It was awesome!!!

bddouglas 08-10-2016 01:04 PM

I was doing great today, then I had to step outside. SMH What was I thinking? Unfortunately, my daughter had a bone marrow biopsy today and needed a little help with her pain meds, so momma to the rescue. I also had to meet my son at the truck stop where he parks his rig when he comes home. But, I'm in now and cooled down.

tkrik 08-10-2016 01:08 PM

I certainly hope all goes well for your daughter. I just said a quick prayer for her.
