I fell and injured the CRPS foot!
Un-be-freaking-lievable.
I just caught my foot JUST right on the carpet and twisted as I went down and ..... SCREAMED. OH it was bad. I think I cried for two hours. And now I can't touch my foot to the floor. I was able to walk on it with crutches (and little bits without) and now I can't touch it to the floor. Its horrible. I actually may have sprained it a bit as I fell, it did twist. I just don't know what to do with myself. I dug out Percocet (on top of my meds) at 2 am and took two and that enabled me to sleep. The pain is horrendous and I really was considering the ER, but I wasn't sure if they would be useful or not. |
My only advice in this terrible situation :eek:is keep your leg elevated and try to reduce swelling.

Ouch and so sorry! It is absolutely worth getting checked out. You don't want to compound your CRPS or an injury by going around with an unidentified problem. A twist while falling certainly has the potential to cause a sprain. An urgent care that has x-Ray, your orthopedist or the ER can take a look to see if anything is wrong. Get it checked out. It might be a sprain, but it might be worse, so do that first - it is *really* important. So sorry to hear you've injured yourself. That is the last thing we need, right? |
Well I went to the ER on Thursday. After a clean xray the CT scan showed a fracture on the first metatarsal. The pain was out of control even on Dilaudid IV. They ended up with a combo of IV Dilaudid and Tylenol working better, but admitting me for pain control. I spent two nights and I'm home now with more meds and a splint. I saw the Podiatrist today and he doesn't want to cast because that's bad for the CRPS. So we stay with the splint so I can remove it and move my ankle around three times a day. And after I come back we may go to the boot (ugh, I just got OUT of the boot).
Breaking your foot when you already have CRPS is NOT recommended. |
Sorry to hear that Becca:( It is good to know that your doctor does not want to put you in a cast. Take it easy and try to heal up over the next few weeks. Start moving those toes and foot as much as you can as soon as your doctor says it is safe to do so. Hopefully things will heal up quickly with no complications adding to the CRPS that you are already dealing with.

Oh Becca, you must be feeling rotten! No wonder you had so much pain. I am so glad you got checked out and the ER was thorough by doing the CT.
In case you are feeling bad that maybe CRPS did this to you, know that my 15 year old healthy son broke his metatarsal twisting and going down this year. So yes, your bones might be more brittle with CRPS or it might've happened anyway. I'm with Bio on the Vit C. 500mg daily for 4-6 weeks is the orthopedic recommendation. If you don't take calcium or Vit D now might be a good time for those too. I think it is a good sign that the fracture didn't show up on x-ray, at least it is not too bad and not displaced. If it stays put you'll avoid surgery and hopefully heal relatively quickly. When my son broke his foot, they did serial x-rays to make sure it was staying in place as it healed and had healed adequately before weight-bearing. A follow up CT sounds reasonable, especially in light of CRPS and bone issues. I hope you heal up soon, :hug: |
YEs, it is a non-displaced fracture and doesn't go all the way through the bone. The podiatrist will be re-xray-ing in a few weeks to check the healing process and also before allowing any weight bearing he wants to make sure it is healed "enough".
I do need to take some vitamins. I eat yogurt every day, but I know that 's not enough calcium. And I know I need the vit C with the break. But darn it I already take SOOO many pills!!! |
You can always get a calcium fortified orange juice to slug your pills down with. :) Also Vitamin D3 (the bioactive form) with K2 comes in a liquid from Thorne and you only need a couple of drops. In addition to helping you utilize calcium, Vit D is important for nerve health and low levels have been correlated with chronic pain. Deficiency is not uncommon. Even living in Texas and getting daily sun, my levels were low. They drop, along with so many other things as we age. :rolleyes:

Check out the Magnesium advocacy group on Facebook. Lots of success stories. They believe that we need magnesium more than D or calcium. One woman with low D, did not fill her doctor's prescription for mega D, instead she followed the mag protocol, which boosted her D levels.
