vitamins and supplements..do you take them?

vitamins and supplements..do you take them?
I have been looking at my medicine cabinet and I have acquired a lot of bottles.
I have reasons for taking all of them...this is what I take:

AM:
Geodon 80mg
lamictal 100mg
lithium orotate 240mg
black cohosh 80mg
Digestive enzyme
vitamin d3 5000units
Calcium 500mg
vit C 1000mg
Coq 10 100mg
fish oils 3caps
muti vitamin

That is 15 pills!

PM:
Geodon 80mg
lamictal 200mg
klonipin .5mg
lithium orotate 240mg
black cohosh 80mg
probiotic
magnesium oxide 1000mg
taurine 1000mg
trytophan 1000mg
GABA 1500mg

That is 13 pills for a daily total of 28 pills.

How do I go on vacation and take all of these pills for 2 weeks?
I will have to bring a bag for all of my bottles.

What do you think?

Take all the ones you need.

You can make room for them.

Certainly take extras of the prescription pills.

It is all going to work out.

Not even a multivitamin?

You could try putting individual am and pm doses in their own sandwich baggies… no bottles.

mrsD 11-26-2016 09:37 AM

If you are leaving the country on this vacation, all RX medications have to be in their orig labeled bottles. Best to put the RX ones in your purse. You can get duplicate labels from your pharmacy and put only that days supply during the vacation in each one leaving the back up ones at home.

You can mostly skip the supplements, for the trip. It will show you if they are working at all when you do a temporary stop.
Only the Vit C is a worry. You can taper down off that for several days, to avoid a rebound scurvy. Vit C tends to make a dependency in people using high doses. Or you can buy a small bottle when you get "there".

Thank you Mrs. D.
We are not leaving the country just driving north 1,000 miles. I guess I could just bring my rx ones like you say and give myself a break, that is what I have done in the past.
I don't even know if the new ones that I take, the lithium or the amino acids are helping anyway.
I have taken them a month now, at least.
I definately think the black kohosh is helping.

bizi 11-26-2016 11:24 PM

since I think the black cohosh is working I will take that still along with the AA.

Bizi, the only supplement which I take is taurine (1 g/day). It has helped with irritating tinnitus in one of my ears - thanks to mrsD for drawing this to my attention :).

This link (courtesy of mrsD) provides evidence that taking taurine as a supplement can help with a range of health problems The Forgotten Longevity Benefits of Taurine - Life Extension.

bizi 11-27-2016 09:56 AM

Thank you for posting this, I have an 87 year old client of mine with tinitis.
Am looking forward to telling her about this. She has tried so many different therapies to no avail.
The article said it could take up to 3 weeks to work, how did you know to stop at 1 Gram and not go up to 3 Grams?
bizi

mrsD 11-27-2016 11:51 AM

I used to take 500mg.... no effect on tinnitus, but very successful for me for sluggish gallbladder.

When I raised to 1000mg a day, that is when the tinnitus effect appeared. I noticed a tremendous decrease within one week.

Taurine also helps with circulation, and that is what I think the tinnitus improvement is due to.

One can go higher if they want (not recommended over 3000mg), but I find my results are adequate for me for now. Sometimes I take 1500 a day but not everyday. I have several bottles left of 500mg from Puritan's and it is easy to take 1500mg that way.

But for an elderly person like your client, I'd start slowly, just because of age, etc. Did you read the link about it?
It can lower blood sugar too for type II diabetics. So very high doses may upset treatment doses of antidiabetic drugs or insulin which may need to be adjusted.

Bizi, 1 gram/day works for me so I have not increased it.

I get my taurine as pharmaceutical-grade powder from a reputable local source.

It is cheap (250 grams costs me $A22). A quarter of an Australian teaspoon of it is about 1 gram (i checked this using a balance at work) - I just dissolve that gram in water.

bizi 11-27-2016 05:39 PM

I take 1000mg pill form. daily at night.
supposed to help with sleep.
good luck to all of those who take it.

Puritan's is having its buy 1 get 2 free... I just got 6 bottles of
1000mg.

Taurine 1 mg 5 Caplets | Amino Acid Supplements Supplements| Puritan's Pride

This sale is not forever, they usually drop it and have others.
The buy one and get 2 free is the most cost effective.

I buy our stuff once or twice a year. Not everything but the most common. Taurine is not nearly as costly as acetyl carnitine. So we are lucky in that.

So do shop around..you will find many prices out there.

bizi 11-27-2016 06:28 PM

I bought 100 capsule for 9$ so am happy with that. NOW brand at my local health food store.
glad that you are able to order it.

NOW is a good company with a solid reputation. Good choice.

bizi 11-29-2016 07:54 PM

Well it may be the placebo effect but I tried an amino acid glutamine.
It is supposed to decrease your cravings.
For quick release open up a capsule and put the powder under you tongue and let it dissolve, more rapidly than just thru your stomach.
I think it worked! I was able to pass by whole foods and not stop.
So I went home amazed!
Hubby cooked some pork chops and mixed veggies. Had a couple pieces of cheese and a handful of almonds prior to dinner.
Hopefully the hot flashes will let me sleep tonight, they did not last night.

I bought some glutamine with this last recent Puritans
Order. I wanted to see if it would help my GI issues.
About 50% is used to repair GI lining from an oral
dose. But I'll have to try it sooner now.;)

Thanks for that suggestion, Bizi.

I take a ton of pills, but aside from laxatives, all of mine are prescription meds. I don't even want to count them.

I'm glad that you are feeling better right now :)

Maybe it's a good thing that you didn't see the naturopath since what you are taking right now seems to be working…

bizi 12-13-2016 08:56 AM

I bought 2 twice a day pill boxes to last for 2 weeks.
Last night I carefully filled them. The boxes are cheap from the dollar tree and can easily fall apart if not careful.
The containers were big enough to handle all of my rx meds and many of my supplements, so I am happy.:)
maybe i should look into more expensive pill boxes, I would really hate it if they fell apart....That would be disastrous!
bizi

OhKay 12-16-2016 06:42 AM

You can just pick up a bag of big thick elastics to hold them together. They are reusable unlike tape.

But if you are looking for something better, I bought a twice daily pill minder at Walgreens that has HUGE slots. The thing is HUGE, but it has plenty of room for all my meds, OTCs, and then some. It wasn't that expensive, and I've never seen anything comparable to it anywhere.

bizi 12-17-2016 11:37 PM

Thank you kay!
I went to walgreens and bought 2- 2times a day pill boxes for 2 weeks.
I really like them. They sort of lock so that is great!
They were not as big as the cheap ones, had to remove the hot flash pills from AM and calcium from PM.
oh well I will just bring extra hot flash pills in another bottle and skip the calcium for 2 weeks.

I stopped taking the amino acids as I don't think they were helping me. My hot flashes have stopped so I stopped taking those supplements. I am still taking the lithium orotate because I do think that is helping my mood which is helping me be in better control. I am able to control what I eat and drink.
So that is good.
I just started taking tumeric with black pepper, maybe that will help with my memory issues????

OhKay 01-16-2017 07:32 AM

I'm so glad that your hot flashes have stopped, and you feel like your mood has improved. You have been doing a lot better with impulse control :)
