hi ocelyn...
how's it goin, nice to hear from you.. Maybe we could talk on the phone sometime about TOS. Ive had it for about 4 years now, although, i'm not sure if it actually is TOS or some stress related nonsense. theres a physical therapist i might try first.... www.focusonhealthpt.com anyways, I'm seeing Dr. Chambi whose just off the 55N around irvine. He's a good guy, I just don't know if I can come up with the money for the MRI and such. However, if I do end up having TOS for sure, and I can get a prescription, the place above accepts insurance. If not then I'll have to see someone cheaper because those PT sessions run about $140  anyways, talk with you again, thanks for your response :) james |
How were u diagnosed with TOS for 4 years?
Injury, overuse, abnormality, accident? If ur seeing Chambi you had to of been referred by a Neurologist who diagnosed you as having TOS and testing performed. Who referred u? Unfortunately, surgeons are surgeons. And there is only so much a surgeon can do to help a TOS patient which is a garentee life time condition. Unfortunately, they do not practice PT or alternative care or even have the education where to send you with the exception of a few TOP docs which I have personally had to pay for. I've been there done that As for stress...having TOS chronic pain is stressful! Watch your BP, having the insurance company deny, delay and send you round and round for 7 years is stressful not to mention unethical and will tax your sanity. Timer just went off... wish I could type more and read other's posts. TOS is so damn maddening gotta go. Good Luck! |

I wasn't diagnosed with TOS. See my other post "probable TOS". I went to Chambi and he said he thinks I might have it. If I do, its probably not as severe as most on here. 4 years ago I first had symptoms.. and.. since 4 years ago Ive done a tremendous amount of work in changing my life style habits. I quit smoking, changed my diet entirely to be low in sugar and fast food free, lots of veggies and stuff. Ive been exercising and stretching reguarlly since then. overall, Id say I was better off now than I was 4 years ago, but I still have really painful flare ups daily.
My stress is pretty high as well. I probably could do with seeing a psychologist at some point. I had my blood pressure dont yesterday and its fine... 120/75 ... so that's not a problem. I also went to an endocrinologist and have ruled out diabetes, thyroid, hormones, etc as a cause of aches and pains. they did a ultrasound and found a hemangioma in my liver which I need to go get a Cat Scan over which is another $350 bucks outa the ole pocket ;-) I wish we had centralized health care already, sheesh. I'll try getting in touch with Chambi to see if he'll approve PT. I tried him yesterday but no luck. I wonder how receptive he'd be.. he seems like a cool guy. |
information gives you power
It is not my intention to cause hard feelings but to give information so good decisions can be made. A google search or a search of the Calif Medical Board may give you more information.
You have come here for information and support. If I knew this information and didn't tell you it would bother me. __________________________________________________ __________ Friday, September 12, 2003 Oc Register Neurosurgery chief Chambi suspended Western Medical Center takes action against doctor with long history of malpractice suits. By CHRIS KNAP, BERNARD WOLFSON, and WILLIAM HEISEL, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER The chief of neurosurgery at Western Medical Center Santa Ana, a major center for head trauma in Orange County, has been suspended from clinical practice by top officials at his hospital. The exact reason for the Wednesday night action by the hospital's Medical Executive Committee was not made public Thursday. Dr. Israel Chambi Venero has been accused repeatedly of malpractice, unnecessary surgery and incompetence - all of which were detailed in an Orange County Register investigation in May. Hospital spokesman David Langness said the results of the hospital's investigation will be sent to the Medical Board of California, as required by state law. Chambi's suspension comes at a time when the hospital's parent company, Tenet Healthcare, is under investigation by multiple federal agencies examining allegations of illegal kickbacks to doctors and unnecessary operations by high-volume surgeons. Last week, the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance said it, too, is investigating Tenet, and it told the company to hand over any documents regarding its relationship with Chambi. After a full investigation, the Medical Staff Executive Committee (MEC) of Western Medical Center Santa Ana voted to summarily suspend Dr. Israel Chambi’s clinical privileges effective September 10, 2003. The summary suspension shall remain in effect until Dr. Chambi fully meets numerous conditions set forth by the MEC Chambi would not comment. His attorney, Michael Zuk, said he was surprised by the hospital's action. "That's the first I've heard of it," Zuk said. "Dr. Chambi has gotten nothing from the hospital." The hospital committee set out conditions that could allow Chambi to return eventually. However, one medical expert said the conditions can be so onerous - involving extensive medical and ethical retraining - that doctors seldom come back. Western Medical Center has hired a professional search firm to find another neurosurgeon for the hospital. In the meantime, trauma coverage at the hospital is being handled by other doctors. In the Register's stories, patients and their families described how Chambi persuaded them or their loved ones to undergo brain or spinal surgery that left them severely disabled. In some cases, other doctors reviewed the records and suggested surgeries should not have been performed. Chambi has been sued 36 times for malpractice or wrongful death since 1992. He won most of the lawsuits. But 10 patients obtained verdicts or settlements totaling $3 million. Four cases are pending. Chambi also lost his teaching post at UCI after doctors there accused him of incompetence and poor judgment. But Western Medical Center, the flagship Orange County hospital for the Tenet Healthcare chain, made Chambi chief of neurosurgery in 1998. On Thursday, former Chambi patients and other neurosurgeons applauded the action by the hospital but said it came much too late. "It should have been done a long time ago," said Tim Kling of Fullerton, whose mother, Frances, suffered permanent brain damage after an operation by Chambi. "Too many people suffered because of him." A Register analysis of public records found that Western Medical billed $38 million for neurosurgeries in 2000 and had the highest per-patient charges in Southern California. "The action by the hospital's medical executive committee is certainly appropriate in the context of the numerous well-documented deficiencies of Dr. Chambi over several years," said Dr. James Doty, a San Francisco neurosurgeon who has reviewed a number of Chambi's cases and is scheduled to testify against him in a trial this year. "It is unfortunate that the peer-review system requires a major investigation by a news organization before such action is instituted," Doty said. "The delay only confirms my belief that major financial producers for a hospital are not closely scrutinized." A letter to Trevor Fetter, Tenet's acting CEO, from Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, shows scrutiny is coming. He asked for documents pertaining to Chambi's compensation; office space, equipment or services provided to him by Tenet; and any reports or audits of him, including anything "regarding unnecessary medical surgeries and procedures at Western Medical Center." The committee has oversight for Medicare and Medicaid. The federal government warned Tenet last week that Redding Medical Center could be kicked out of Medicare. "The investigation itself, though focused primarily on the Redding facility, is really a broad-brush look at Tenet and its corporate governance practices," said Jill Gerber, Grassley's spokeswoman. "The situation with Dr. Chambi presents another hospital under Tenet's control where similar allegations have been made. "Senator Grassley is particularly concerned about the type of peer review Tenet is doing or not doing and whether the company is prohibiting the peer review of these doctors with the goal of keeping them in place and keeping their high billing practices for the company." Langness, the spokesman for Tenet, said the company follows the law with regard to physician payments. "We have a team of attorneys who make sure any payments to physicians are within the law," Langness said. Added Zuk, the attorney for Chambi: "The U.S. Senate is fishing for financial inducements, but Dr. Chambi doesn't have any. They never gave him a penny. They are looking for stuff like that, but none of it exists." Zuk also said he received a notice from the Medical Board dated Sept. 2 saying that its investigation of Chambi was completed and that there would be no further action. But Candace Cohen, a spokeswoman for the board, said Thursday that Chambi remains under investigation and that the board will scrutinize closely what it's sent by Western Medical Center's doctors. "If information is brought to our attention that a physician is an imminent danger to the public, we will seek an interim suspension of his license." OH. MY. GOD.
I tell you, I had the WORST SUSPICION of chambi when I met him. Then, after posting [that] in my other post, I felt bad and renounced that with the intention of being less judgemental of the guy. HOLY MOLY. I am SO SO grateful you posted this. |
Still dumb struck. I am horrified beyond belief. Just... .... oh my god.

theres tons more info if you research UCI and the OC register on Chambi
However, I personally am aware of many patients he has saved from fatal brain conditions, car crashes. He's a caring surgeon. However, in my experience things did not turn out well. Thats all I'll say. |
Jal
Chambi is a surgeon who will recommend surgery
He only does decompressions Feels rib removals is NOT necessary, theres less chance of scarring and better chance of recovery. Depends if ur nervous system is already damaged. He does not know who to send you to for pt. Been there done that. Well, I should say he didn't know a few years ago. All my previous therapist hurt me and waste time and $$ and who knows hurt me more in the long run without proper care. So when the expert patients here say go to....they r NOT kidding. The patients here are the "experts" and know much more than your ordinary Neuro/Ortho/Caregiver. Research, read, listen and ask questions Thats how I learned and educated Smart cookies here Quote:

ruptured aneurysm 2001
I would like to share my 911 experience. In year Oct 2001, I had a ruptured brain aneurysm. I was in coma when I arrived Western Medical Hospital Emergency room early morning. Dr. Chambi was my doctor who did the emergency surgery. This doctor did beyond call of duty and thus, "saved my life". He just knew exactly what to do in such a critical situation, thus timing was so important. I had less than 5 minutes to live. Dr. Chambi did a miraculous amazing 8 hours late afternoon to midnight brain surgery. I came out alive. I have NO disability. NO brain damage. None!!! "Amazing". Dr. Chambi performed a very careful and accurate brain surgery . Today year 2011, my friends call me a "walking miracle". Sincerely, I would like to let the world know that Dr. Israel Chambi is caring, dedicated, compassionate and a great neuro surgeon. We are lucky to have a doctor like him in this world. Im the living proof of his expertise in neuro surgery. I will always recommend him to all my friends, relatives, families or even my own child. Because Dr. Israel Chambi is GOOD!!!!!
Contact me if you want to see how normal Im today. If you like proof of Dr. Israel Chambi professionalism , expertise in neuro surgery. No doubt, This doctor is one great doctor who cares. Quote:

You must have been in the waiting room the same day my appt was. A full house of what 20 people back in 2003 while we all sat for 4 hours. Yep, i was dumb enough to sit that long and miss that much work. But as we all started talking to pass time one by one shared how he saved each others lives. Was i sent to a saint?
He did what he could conservatively with me, I feel. However, he performed an additional surgery on my elbow (ulnar nerve transposition) never discussed with me and my husband, no chart documentation nor did we consent to the elbow surgery. Sent me home within-in a 24hr recovery after a 6-hr bilateral costaclavicular decompression surgery & right ulnar nerve decompression, with absolutely no instruction or pain meds. Call afeter call then ended up in the ER in such severe pain worse than pre-surgery... As the days i recovered post op the news spread rampant in the OC Register. O geesh, our hearts dropped into our stomachs as we reasearched the list of no-no's, firings from hospitals and procedures he performed not approved at UCI and...(?) Then when my symptoms reappeared within 30 days and told me to "give it time" each and every month for a year. He finally threw up his hands after a CTS which didnt rectify a thing except send me to the ER after PVC's and a BP of 170/100 spiked, a cardiologist and 30-day holter moniter. It was a mess to say the least. Now people and professionals had a serious beef with Chambi but as you and others are proof positive he took trauma patients and brought them back to life. Is he still in practice? Quote:
