broke toe

well i broke my middle toe of my left foot yesterday. couldnt feel foot coming into contact with steel and banged it really hard, it bounced off but i didnt feel it. woke up this morning and my toe was pointing at a 45 degree angle to the left. It's broken and taped up now. Third break i have because of PN and lack of balance or feeling. There goes long walks and the ocean for most of the rest of the summer

glenntaj 08-13-2007 08:53 PM

Definitely sorry to hear about that.

So many of us with insufficient feeling in our extremities have to be SO careful as to where we actually place our bodies.

Of course, one of the other effects of many neuropathies is difficulty with propriception--our awareness of just where our body is in space and in relation to other objects . . .

And I know there's not much to be done for a broken toe, other than to support it against other non-broken ones and allow healing to take place.

Three is more than enough, Joe. No more for the summer. :)

Brian 08-13-2007 09:18 PM

I could see how easy for this type of thing to happen with the nerves being numb, i hope it heals quickly for you anyway, mate.

dorrie 08-13-2007 09:26 PM

HeyJoe! Sorry to hear about your toe. I have never broke a toe. I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to get around! Hope you have a speedy recovery!:)

Dakota 08-13-2007 10:53 PM

So sorry, HeyJoe. But a good reminder to the rest of us to always wear shoes. If we can....

dahlek 08-13-2007 11:12 PM

You are in good company!

After my knee incident this winter, stepped wrong and broke a toe in March. Just didn't bother with the docs as I know the 'wrapping' and elevating routine by now. Besides, unless it's a clean break, fractures don't show on the films for a couple of weeks as new calcium fills in and ideally repairs.

BUT - I do have to compliment you on the talent it takes to get it to a 45degree angle! THAT IS SPECIAL. No Outstanding! - j

Oh did I say OUCH!!!!! Already? - j...again

Yorkiemom 08-13-2007 11:55 PM

Oooweee.... Sorry to hear about this Joe. It is so hard to believe we can even break things and still not feel them...

Been there done that!

Hi there, I've broken my toes before, banging them on things and not knowing it when I do it, but the next day realizing they are black and blue. I'm so careful to check my feet now when I bang them or drop things on them.

Just watch it to be sure it heals correctly.

shiney sue 08-14-2007 12:49 AM

Hey Joe

Stop it... Benifit of PN can breake and not know, but anything blue
or swollen insist on x-rays. I found out i had broken ankle and did not
feel it. I had to have it casted, still is. My ankle doen't hurt but have to
make sure it's healing and cast isn't rubbing.... Joe  Sue

SO sorry

to hear about your toe. I hope it will cure as soon as possible.

darlindeb25 08-14-2007 05:00 AM

 Feel better Joe:hug: . I am missing my ocean walks too.

Silverlady 08-14-2007 08:23 AM

Awww, I'm so sorry

I hate that you are missing your walks. That bumping toes into things isn't fun. I've got the long slim foot with long slim toes. I finally bought sandals this year that have a baby bumper on the ends. Really...http://www.rei.com/product/732901 Now this shoe makes mens styles too. Here's the website: http://www.rei.com/product/733856?ext_cat=undefined

These are Keens shoes. They are expensive unless you catch them on sale but I've found mine on sale at about half regular price. The rubber is substantial and really probably does stop most of the breaks I'd normally get. I'm buying these things in winter styles too.

Here's hoping your poor toes get well soon. I'm very familiar with toe breaks. Hurts doesn't it?

Take care and here's hoping they heal fast.

Billye:

I absolutely loved the way these shoes looked, especially the mens shoe. All nice and sturdy. I have a question about the lady's blue one.

It seems that there is a toe thing (it goes between your toes, like a thong), am I correct? And if it does, is it comfortable.

I tried to enlarge the picture but it looks like you can't just slide your foot through. Enlighten me please. Very pretty shoe by the way.

Oh my gosh, I'm sooooo sorry that happened!!!!!!

((((((((HeyJoe)))))))))))

Darn it! I just hate what not feeling puts us in line for!

And what is so galling is that there's no feeling when we need it, but a lot of pain we don't need. (though I have to admit my pain levels are way down, except for when there is stress.)

Have you tried taking a LOT more Methylcobalamin or cyanocobalamin in shots? It was when I had a shot a day and sometimes two for several months that my PN was dramatically affected for the better.

There's a neat post on this forum about getting the hydroxy form in Australia without a prescription at the drug store... maybe they call it "chemist" like in England. I forget.

Boy, not being able to walk is the PITS!!!!!!!

I am so careful now... Last year there were months and months on end when I couldn't walk... so I'm really sympathetic!!!!!!

nide44 08-14-2007 09:45 AM

HeyJoe,
I've DONE THAT
!!Sorry that you're in the same situation.
Best Wishes.... to get better soon.
(45 degrees - OWCHH!!... that's gotta hurt-later)

Roxie2007 08-14-2007 09:46 AM

Dang! That doesn't sound like one bit of fun! I hope that toe heals quickly so you are up and around again!

rose 08-14-2007 11:00 AM

Oh, no! :( Everybody, toe kissies again. They worked last time!

daniella 08-14-2007 11:04 AM

I'm so sorry. On Silverlady's post we were just talking about balance and walking. I hope you heal quickly.

HeyJoe 08-14-2007 12:15 PM

Thank you for the notes and thank you for the suggestions......i try to be careful but slip up at times.....im going to have to wear shoes as much as possible......

daniella 08-14-2007 12:26 PM

I have been trying to wear my shoes even in the house. I think it gives me more support and makes me walk better. Random ? why do some people feel only certain things? Is it just how the pn is?Hey joe are you in pt?

HeyJoe 08-14-2007 12:48 PM

i did pt about 4 years ago, i walk ok and as much as i can though every step is painful. I still have the strength in my legs( maybe why i bang into things so hard). I think i really just have to protect my feet more....balance is a big problem too, so im really careful when i can see well because of darkness.

daniella 08-14-2007 01:57 PM

I can relate to each step being painful and off balance. I often wonder what people see when I walk. My face expressions and I look drunk or what I call waddle. I hope you feel better. Maybe you should try pool therapy too.

Silverlady 08-14-2007 05:40 PM

For Melody

Mel,
Those shoes don't have thongs in them. They are slides. And the toes are tough.

Billye

MelodyL 08-14-2007 08:22 PM

No thongs!!!

Terrific. They look nice and verrrrryy comfortable.
Mel
