emg anyone?
i have been looking over my medical records and noticed i have had a lot of emgs in an effort to isolate the areas of my extremities were most effected. the most interesting result seems to be that the longer i am in a major flare the more obvious my results were. just curious if anyone else has had emgs to map their symptoms, and if so have they noticed any significant changes?

  EMGs EMGs EMGs:mad:  .... i have quite a funny story about it... It hurt like hell i must say he did the fingers and then the elbow and when he got to the neck i jumped off the table and punched the physcian in the face... It was just my natural reaction to the pain he was putting me through i felt terible.... I have triple crush so i cant tell you about noticable changes because i will never have another one done... And if you do becareful where you hands are dont want to punch any more docs... LOL....
Hope all are having pain free days and gental hugs.. .   |
i had one partial one to confirm my neuropathy and that was it for me .... all set with those.
wildberry, punching sounds appropriate! i just yelled, "that's it!' and i got up. ha! joan |
lol yeah i think if there is one test i would tell a newbie to avoid the emg is probably it. i had the screws in my tib plateau removed in the office with just a little local and honestly i think the emg is worse. i have a funny reaction to a doctor procedure. i dislocated my knee and broke my leg in 2 places and my ortho doc felt the need to poke and prodd way to many times i finally told him if he did it again i was going to kick him. needless to say he ignored, i kicked in the head, he slammed against the wall unconscious. when he came to he looked at me and said "ok my bad". i was 13 and he knew i did kickboxing for cross-training.:D
anyway i wouldnt recomend an emg i just wondered if anyone has had more than one in the same area as the disease progressed and had varrying results. i did and i thought it was kind of funny because most of the time i have had one it was because my hand hurt or my foot hurt...and the results have become more significant and when they were done prior to a flare the results were far less sigvificant. i guess i am trying to find other people who have suffered through the procedure more than once to see if their number changes are the same as mine sorry i had to remind so many of the horrible procedure thanks for all the input |
BOY! we have some tough chicks on this board! the punching and the kicking, yikes!
sorry i can't help with your survey. one was enough for me and it was only a partial ... joan |

All my EMG's have been normal except the first one that showed a little carpal tunnel and a problem with the median nerve at the elbow. I was told that people often get carpal tunnel early in RSD. I think the elbow problem might have been because I was grinding this nerve into the door handle of my car whenever I drove. This wasn't conscious. Perhaps it was an instinctive reaction to the pain. This elbow had given me trouble a few years earlier so it could have been related to that. The doc called it tendonitis.

    Wow, you had the screws removed from your tibia in the doctors office. Did the doctor gown and glove??? You are very brave indeed. I don't think I would have been:wink: Cheers Tayla:hug: |

Hi Wakegirl,
EMG, never, never again.Thats all I have to say. Sue K. |
Desi, I was glad i was able to give you a laugh it was terrible... and i felt terrible.... I just flew up off the table and with my left hand rsd is on the right punched him square in the face... He was so shocked he just sat there and then busted out laughing... He said he was going to start wearing a face mask... At least he wasnt terribly mad at me lol..
:mf_swordfight: I thought it was funny after i got over the pain.. my bf sat there like i was nuts lol.... i think that was one of the only times he was embarresed of me lol! Oh well what do you do!!! Pain free days and gental hugs to all     |
EMG - 3 too many! I feel they are just useless, I kept getting negative results which was expected. But, if you must endure one, I say do it to keep the doctors happy then run like heck. :winky:

One of my doctors told me if I have the CTS surgery it would go into that hand, but I can barely use the hand and the pins and needles hurt so bad and I cant hold anything in that hand. I am trying to hold out.

You guys are scaring the s**t out of me:eek: I am scheduled to have emg next Friday and I am very nervous about it! I'm really afraid it's going to send me into a major flare-up:(! Has anyone had an emg done and Not had a major flare? I think I'll just run away instead:D any thoughts? :grouphug:jen

one question ... why do you really need an EMG? if there is no real reason, don't have it. joan
|
Hey Joan,
I don't really think I need an EMG but my pain doc thinks I should have it done because he thinks I might have something pressing against my long thoracic nerve and he suspects cervical radiculopathy....oh boy! Basically I haven't had any tests done and I think he's trying to play the rule out game! I really am scared though:eek:! I tried accupuncture last week because I had read somewhere that it could help with the constant muscle tics that I have and he inserted one of the needles in my hand and I almost died! It was really weird because my nerve in my hand where the needle was inserted started twitching so bad that the needle was actually moving around and it was extremely painful-I don't know if it was the rsd that caused it or if he just didn't put it in right but either way it was very unpleasant and now I am worried that the EMG is going to really mess with me. Anyway, I was actually scheduled to have it done last month and I chickened out and honestly, I might chicken out this time too!!!! :hug:jen |
Hey Jen dont be scared. It's no more than feeling like you stuck your tongue to a nine volt battery:eek:
Naaaaaaaah just kidding. I have had so many I dont even mind them anymore. It is not a nice vacation but it's not torture either. It is uncomfortable but hang in there:hug: |
Ha, Ha, Ha:tongue: You have a very twisted sense of humor:D, but that's ok I kinda do too! Wondering though, if you can feel the electricity while test is being done, cuz I know that'll mess w/me!! I can't even use my tens unit w/out my muscles twitchin' all over the place! Anyway, still scared, jen:hug:

i probably should have been a little more thought full with my no emg if you can avoid it. i had a brachal plexus (sp) injury and a ulnar nerve damage. i also had major damage to my knee. so i have had a few to many. if you are only going to have one and have a doctor who is willing to back off they arent to bad. they get to the totally uncomfortable point when they go really frrp and forwarn you its going to hurt. sorry i didnt mean to scare anyone:(
|
Hey don't worry about it, I was just jokin'! I'm a big girl and I suppose it's my choice whether or not to have one. I guess deep down I'm hoping they find some kind of reason for my rsd, I know it's a long shot but there it is. The truth! :cool:jenny
|
just me, but i would not do it. i am done until someone find a cure, and even then, i will have to see it work on one hundred people and have them all get better before anyone touches me! i guess i am a bit extreme, but i feel some just like to do tests for no real reason. now, if you have something pressing on your thoracic nerve, what will he do about it? if nothing, then why go through the test? if it may be fixable, then that is a different story, but i bet you could see something pressing with an MRI which is painless. just know your options and all the whys and hows before you let anyone do something that may make you flare. who needs that?
