Why can't I store passwords???

Okay, just fixed Outlook Express but now I have a brand new challenge.

You know when you visit various websites, (such as this one), and you put it in your favorite places, and you just click on the link and zoom, it takes you there and it NEVER ASKS YOU FOR YOUR PASSWORD BECAUSE YOU HAVE STORED IT, or something to that effect......well, ever since the tech guy and I fixed my outlook express problems, for some reason, I have to always type in passwords for every single website I visit.

I go to the neuropathy boards, I have to type in user ID and password. I do check the box "remember my password" but it makes no difference. I am prompted time and time again, to put in user id and password.

I had to put it in this forum just to ask this question. And if I exit and try and go back in again, it will prompt me again.

This has been happening ever since last night.

I go on many websites and I had all my passwords stored.

So what can I do so that my computer will stop making me type in passwords and user id's over and over.

Drives one nuts, believe me.

Thanks to anyone who can help me out here.

Your browser must be clearing all your cookies and /or cache? - that usually deletes all record of stored passwords.
the cookies for those site's & passwords are what is needed to be kept.

for IE go to internet options
on the general tab - Browsing history - go to view files -and see what kind of stuff is listed

hmm, that's all I can see to change/check - I don't use IE much anymore so hopefully someone more familiar with the settings will add some ideas.

MelodyL 10-08-2007 08:32 AM

Jo:

Exactly how do I do the Internet Options, general tab thing?

I went to control panel, General, and saw Browsing History but all I saw were two buttons. One said Delete and the other said Settings.

There was no way to view files.

On the top of my screen there is no File.. View.. Edit.

There used to be but right now, there just the place for me to put in the URL, and when I hit either the enter key on my keyboard, or go to the right of the URL , and click the little up and down arrow, then I can go to any website I want.

So how can I see the view files thing?

Thanks so much.

Melody

Jomar 10-08-2007 12:39 PM

You were close to it-
I must have forgot to write that step
- click on the settings button and that opens the next pop up window where you can view files & objects.

I don't know for sure if that is the problem but it's good to see what is there once in awhile.

MelodyL 10-08-2007 03:01 PM

I did just as you suggested. I went to settings and view files.

There are 13 items in the temporary internet folder.

So what does this tell you.

I still have to put in a user id and a password every single time.

Very frustrating.

Anybody know???????

Curious 10-08-2007 03:20 PM

melody,

when you go to your Internet Options, the tabs on the top should say:
General, Security, Privacy, Content, Connections, Programs, Advanced.

click on Security.
you will see Icons that say Internet, Local intranet, Trusted, Restricted.

click on Trusted.
click on the box that says Sites.
add the URL of the sites that you want the passwords saved. add them completely http://www.blahblahbla.....

be sure to click save changes or the apply button.

this will allow those sites to use the cookies that will "remember" you.

i hope this helps.

MelodyL 10-08-2007 04:47 PM

Okay, here's exactly what happened.

I copied and pasted all the URL's in a microsoft word document, so I could copy and paste each one, when I wanted to add it to the site list.

So I had about 7 links in my micro document.

I went to Control Panel, Internet Options, Security,
I clicked on Trusted, I clicked where it said Sites,

and yes, a whole line was there where I could add what I wanted to add.

So when I added the first one, and I clicked on the word ADD, it prompted me saying "this needs to use the https//www "

So I noticed that all my sites started with http and not https, but I added the s, anyway

So I clicked on add, and I did this with all 7 URLs

So I went to click save or apply and all it allowed me to do was click on okay.

I tried to test this and it didn't work. I put in my user id and password, went into this forum, exited, tried to come on back and it asked me for my user id and password again.

I am definitely doing something wrong with the add a site trusted thing.

Thanks,

Mel

Curious 10-08-2007 05:27 PM

when you logged on to nt, did you check off the box that says "remember me" ?

do you use the Log Out or do you just click the X?

if you Log Out, then it totally clears the cookies and you won't be automaticly logged in when you come back.

you got me curious now.

MelodyL 10-08-2007 07:09 PM

Hon. I've been storing passwords for years. I always click on the "remember me" thing.

Guess what??

EVERYTHING WORKS.

I have no idea what the hell I did, but I did what you said.

Ten minutes ago, it didn't work. Now I can go to different forums, (I tested) and I'm stored.

Life is beautiful once again.

I THANK YOU. You are all geniuses!!!!!

Oh, when the passwords work, life is good, life is good. My husband thinks I'm nuts, but LIFE IS GOOD!!!! lol

Do you shut off your computer every night or leave it on all the time?
just wondering - may not have anything to do with this problem.

I do know I tried for a whole day to get the quick time player to work for a online school site on IE and I gave up , turned off the pc and the next time {day or two later} I tried it the darn thing worked.

MelodyL 10-09-2007 10:03 AM

Hi Jo:

I shut off my computer every night. But that would have absolutely nothing to do with storing of passwords. This much I know.

It must have everything to do with the security tab thing, and trusted sites. And also. when i was prompted to type in the URL's of the trusted sites, how come it demanded that I type in https and not http??

Why the S after the http???? The website is http NOT https!!!!

Very confusing.

Also, how come it worked (it allowed me to store passwords for a good 15 mnutes) and then I tried going back into this forum and it asked me for my user ID and password again, and the same thing happened with the other forums.

I usually go on The INternet Movie Database and their soap opera message boards. Do you know how long it takes to put in your user ID and password every time you want to do this??? My goodness, I wound up throwing up my hands last night and saying "I give up". Until I can figure out what the heck is going on, well, I don't know.

Now I can't call up Verizon DSL because they will tell me "this is a computer problem" and not a Verizon DSL problem." and they would be right.

There has to be something I'm not doing right here.

I shall endeavor (with the help of you genius people) to ultimately achieve my goal......and that is........STORE USER ID's AND PASSWORDS!!!!

Dramatic, ain't I????? lol

Jomar 10-09-2007 11:28 AM

How about giving the Mozilla Firefox browser a try?

you can still have IE too- but it will just give you a second browser to use for just these kinds of things.

It's free, secure and I will say as far as loading webpages- much faster on firefox than IE- at least on my machine anyway.

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

all you do is download it & save it where you can find it - then double click the saved file to install it
- it will ask if you want to import settings, bookmarks etc from IE- it will make desktop icons for you {or ask if you want them}
follow the prompts till finished.

To use it instead of IE just double click the icon and give it a try.

MelodyL 10-09-2007 03:47 PM

Jo:

Do you think that it is Internet Explorer that is interfering with my not being able to store passwords. But how can that be??

I mean, say I go on the internet, and my browser is internet explorer, and I have all my links in my favorite places.

Every place I now go, I have to input user ID's and passwords. So that means that these websites are not putting cookies on my computer, right?? Would changing browsers affect the cookie thing??? I feel like I'm talking about cooking and recipes!!!!!!

lol

Thanks

Jomar 10-09-2007 06:05 PM

It could be something with the IE a weird glitch- trying a different browser would give you an idea if it is your system {windows/IE/ settings/anti virus conflicts etc}
if you try the firefox and it still has the same problem then we know it isn't only an IE problem.
but if firefox works for you then we know it most likely is a IE setting or glitch

Just a simple way to narrow it down a bit.

Or- if you did any kind of system updates or changes lately you can try to do a System Restore??
You won't lose any info - it just sets the windows system back to the time/date that you set.
the restore points available should be highlighted - it's pretty easy to do and each step explained
to get to it- go to
Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/and down the list to System Restore
If you try this close all other open programs first.

MelodyL 10-09-2007 08:13 PM

Hi.

Well, I did the system restore (to October 1st).
Forget it. Gave me all sorts of problems with my Outlook Express and so I undid the restore.

Now my Outlook Express is giving me the same pop up window when I try and switch identities.

It says "Pop 3 server is not responding"

This is most frustrating.

And I still can't store passwords.

woe is me.

lol

Well I'm stumped on this one for the moment- I hope somebody else comes along:):):confused:

Brian 10-11-2007 08:59 AM

Hi Melody, just on the password thing, i also think that trying Firefox would be worth a try, just to see if its only IE causing that and do you have any programs running that automatically delete temp files ?

MelodyL 10-13-2007 11:35 PM

Help!!! Help!!!

I just downloaded Firefox, Mozilla, WHATEVER THIS THING IS!!!

I know it's a browser because up top it says 'Neurotalk Communities - Reply to Topic - Mozilla Firefox.

I want all my favorite places to be on the left side of my screen (just exactly like it was with Internet Explorer. I went to Bookmarks, and I can see the favorites (they're called Bookmarks with this browser, right??). I imported them.
But how can I get them to be on the left of my screen. And I want the ease of just clicking on the star which was over the favorite places when I used Internet Explorer.

Please somebody tell me how I can always have my favorites on the screen at the same time as the website I'm using.

Now another question. Can a person switch back and forth from Internet Explorer to Mozilla. I know my husband won't like this because it doesn't show the favorite places.

Anybody know how I can achieve this?? Thanks so much.
And we'll find out if it stores passwords.

Thanks everybody.

Melody

Brian 10-13-2007 11:51 PM

Just go up to top of page and click on " View " scroll down to ' Sidebar " then go across to " Bookmarks " and click on that, then your favorites should be on the left of your screen & yes, you can go back to IE and import your favorites.

Jomar 10-14-2007 12:05 AM

Oh and you can use either one as you want.
A few sites/programs will only work with IE, but it will give you a notice on FireFox if you need to switch to IE.
If that happens- just copy the link and open IE and paste the link in the location bar, hit enter and it's good to go.

You can have both open at the same time if you want - IE and Firefox

MelodyL 10-14-2007 10:23 AM

Well, what can I say. I love you!!!

Not only did I do the sidebar thing and got the favorites on the left side, the thing loads up links so fast, it's amazing. Far faster than Internet Explorer.

I imported my favorites. So I have my favorites on the left side of my screen. Why is Firefox faster than IE???

Oh, one more question. Right now, I have my favorites on the left side of the page, (I'm using Firefox). If I go to a website, and I want to add it to my favorite places (I know, they are called bookmarks in Firefox), well, how do I do this? In IE, there was a star at the top of the left side with the word "add", I would click on the star, and that website would be added to my favorites.
I am looking at the top of the left side of my bookmarks, and there is no way to add a favorite place.

Is there a procedure to add favorite places to the left side of my screen?

Thanks so much. You are all dolls!!!

Mel

P.S. and the user id and passwords WORK IN FIREFOX. Glory Be

Jomar 10-14-2007 11:44 AM

I think the consensus is that IE is a bloated program and because of that is slower, don't really know why...

To make a bookmark or save a site or page-

Click on Bookmarks up at the top
and the second thing in the list is "bookmark this page"
click that and it's added.

MelodyL 10-14-2007 11:56 AM

Hi Jo:

I’ve learned how to do bookmarks.

Now here’s my problem.

When I am at my computer, and I click on the Mozilla icon, it takes me to a Google page.

I don’t want this page to be my home page. I want MSN.com

Now I have not made firefox my default browser yet. I want Alan to get to know this and when he learns how fast this is, he will probably say, Oh, wow, let’s make this our default browser.

But until this happens, am I stuck with Google being my home page. If not, how do I make MSN.com my home page??

And I just learned how to make my folder "MElody's Stuff", appear as the first thing on the left side of my favorites. I love this.

See, I can still learn at the age of 60. This is so cool!!!

Oh, and this is a good question. Since I only want to put certain links into Melody's Stuff, and I know how to bookmark a page, (Let's use this particular website for example".). How can I bookmark this forum, Computers, into my Melody's Stuff Folder?? I mean, I know I can go to Bookmarks, and click on Bookmark this page. But will it go into my Melody's Stuff folder, or will it go to the bottom of all the bookmarks? Then I'll have to take my cursor and move it up into the Melody's Folder???? There must be a way to click on "add this bookmark and it will go directly into Melody's folder, right?

I'm going to try and do this right now.

NER MIND. I FOUND OUT HOW TO DO THIS. I just clicked on Bookmark this page, it prompted me where to save it, and it went right into Melody's Folder.

Lady, I owe you BIG TIME!!!!
Thanks, Melody (and believe me, this is the best thing since sliced bread)

Jomar 10-14-2007 12:48 PM

If you don't make IE or Firefox the default you can use both as you want.
If you make one the default then when you open links in other programs or documents or email the default one will be used.

to change the home page just put the MSN link into the location bar - hit enter to go to it
then go up to Tools / Click Options then click on the Main tab
then click on the use current page

close and reopen to see if MSN is set as home page for you.

or you can just copy and paste the MSN link right into home page area and click OK to save it

MelodyL 10-14-2007 08:08 PM

Hi. You said:

If you make one the default then when you open links in other programs or documents or email the default one will be used."

I've read this three times. Not sure what you mean by open links in other programs or email...etc.

Can you please elaborate.

And I'll do the msn home page thing. Thanks so much.

You should have seen Alan surfing the net in this Mozilla Thing.

I just love that it lets me store passwords and user id's.

Melody

--------------------------------------------------------
P.S. UPDATE... UPDATE....UPDATE.....

I did the MSN homepage thing. It didn't work when I did "use current page", so I just typed in the URL for MSN and clicked okay. Exited and when I went back in, there was MSN.

Now I have to learn what Add-ons are.
