Blood sugar spike?
2 months ago I had a blood test done and my fasting glucose level was at 72. Now it's at a consistent 110, which is indicative of prediabetes. Is it possible for your blood sugar to go up that quickly? Or is there maybe something else, some disease/infection, that's causing this?
|
Would you believe that I have many friends who have blood sugar in the 120's and their doctor said to them "no problem, you don't have diabetes".
I shudder to think if any of their doctors said "you have pre-diabetes". They'd probably bong the doctor over the head. I have a friend with diabetes. Last year her doctor told her she had a diabetic stomach. What was her response to him? "What the heck do you know??" and believe me she didn't say the word heck. Her sugar never went below 200. Nothing I could say to her, because she knows everything. Well, she had to get a cat scan three weeks ago and she was having pains, and diarrhea, and constipation. She has a history of diverticulitis. But she went on antibiotics and that cleared up. She stopped the antibiotics a good 10 days ago. She hasn't been out of the bathroom for the whole day. She can't stop going. Then she gets constipated. She phoned me and said "It must have been the escarole I had yesterday". Or maybe it was this, or that. I would never say to her "maybe it's gastroparesis", because I once made the mistake of explaining a diabetic stomach to her. I'll never do that again. When she gets fed up with her condition, she just might do something about it. She will say "oh my sugar is really good, it's only 150". Forget it. They are sending her for another cat scan next week. I wonder, Can a cat scan determine a diabetic stomach?. I would love if another doctor got a hold of her and said "Listen to me, you must get your blood sugar under control". Won't happen. Not until she stops watching the Food Network. Mel |
This test
is more accurate to reveal what is going on with you with time:
http://www.labtestsonline.org/unders.../a1c/test.html Are you testing your blood sugar at home? With a meter? Do not test yourself during or after exercise, as it will read higher. If you use steroids for pain/inflammation, it will test higher also. Infections too can raise it temporarily. As will high Vitamin C intake. http://www.diabeteshealth.com/read/1999/09/01/1630.html |
I do take vitamin C but only 500 mg a day... this person took 4,500k mg of Vit C.. Yeah I'm using a meter. I was hoping the meter was wrong my my girlfriend tested at 80 fasting, 100 2 hrs. I'm currently taking an antibiotic but no steroids for all I know. Would I get elevated results if I tested it at the hospital?
|
so you are taking an antibiotic?
So you have an infection of some kind? This will raise blood sugar.
|
Well, I don't know if you remember but I have had GI symptoms for some time now and the doctor thinks it's a stomach bug/bacteria/parasite or something like that. I've been on antibiotics for about 5 days and the GI symptoms seem to be getting better, but still nowhere near "normal". Next stop is an endoscopy. So I'm not sure if I have an infection or not....
|
Wait until you are all better, then go for the test Mrs. D suggested.
When you have anything wrong in your body, any tests results are screwed up. Melody |
There are quite a few respected docs that are researchers
that consider PN to be a pre-diabetic condition, even if you have not been Dx'd with a type 1 or 2 diabetic condition. I do not have diabetes, but it is in my family history, both sides (type 2 old age onset, my dad & my mom's dad). My neuro (head of the neuro dept, at Hopkins) has me down as pre-diabetic, with borderline high-normal test results. |
:eek:Wow! I thought I was doing OK with my diabetes T2...On my best days my sugar are about 135....on my bad days they can shoot up to 288! I am due for a checkup with my Dr. I am sure that he will change my meds....right now I am on 1000 mg of Metformin in the AM and same in the PM!!!
|
keeping perspective...
You want to keep your perspective here.
1) fasting of 72 is pretty low. More typical would be 90. 2) 110 is not a "spike", it is a mild elevation. my son just got his test results back--he is 26--- and his fasting glucose was in the mid 80's. The choice of words here -- spike--- communicates to me that you are anxious. This alone will not be good for your health. While it is still rare young people are presenting with Type II diabetes, it is happening. But most of the late teens and early 20's are obese, with terrible daily habits. Severe stress that is continual will raise cortisol levels in your blood and therefore raise blood sugar. I am curious as to what you do for a living there in Korea. Are you under alot of stress there for some reason? |
Dorrie:
Hi, my sugar reading used to be like yours, but I was never 135. I was always over 200. I was on so much metformin that I never got out of the bathroom. The people at Cornell put me on Lantus and that combined with good eating habits, well, this morning it was 100. I'll take 100 any day of the week. Oh, want to hear something interesting?? Whenever I eat any type of fish, my blood sugar reading is beautiful the next morning. Now I never cheat or eat any red beef, (I havent' had any red beef in a long long time). But I watch portions, But I do eat chicken, and turkey burgers, and of course my buffalo chicken sausage which I adore. But when I eat fish, the next day, my blood sugar is absolutely on the money. I don't know why fish does this but I eat fish 5 times a week now. Hey, can't hurt!!!! Take care, Melody |
I'm sorry to ask on your thread but have a ? about sugar. I remember another poster stopped the added sugar to help with pain. I know many others watch it. How do you do this? I ask cause I'm not diabetic and I'm thin but the candy and sugar in my diet is out of control to where I'm nauseas but still keep going. My nutritionist said its common among people with past eating issues. We have tried everything a balance of protein/fat/carbs,mini meals, small treats and then I go overboard. I could eat sugar plain and I mean that. Do I just lack willpower or what? I don't want a diet or to loose weight just want to maintain and be healthier. I love my nutritionist and she really helped me get healthy but was wondering what helps others. Thanks.

Daniella:
Hi Hon. What you have is a compulsion. The fact that you can eat plain old white sugar, right out of the container, or bowl (this is what you said right??), well, I would assume that most people cannot do this. I never heard of anyone that does this. Yeah, overweight people eat cupcakes, ding dongs etc. But not plain white sugar. That is a compulsion, well, this will take therapy, an understanding of why you are doing this and listening and following your nutritionist's advice. It's very hard to change our habits. We are all creatures of habits. Some habits are very very hard to break. You have acknowledged that you have an eating disorder. That is very good, and it's a good step in the right direction. If you believe that the sugar you are ingesting is contributing to your PN, then you have to condition yourself not to eat any sugar, especially plain white sugar. This is bad for your teeth, let alone what it might be doing to your PN. This is a subject best discussed with your therapist, (perhaps in one of the group sessions).??? I wish you well hon. |
Oh no I didn't mean really eating sugar plain. I don't do that just a lot of candy and like I could almost each sugar straight but not really. Just a big sweet tooth and the amount of candy I eat increase daily instead of decreases. I know the more you eat the more you want. I think I just need to really focus on not having it and having better things in its place till I get used to it. I eat pretty well balanced meal since on a meal plan but the extras are always in form of sugar stuff like candy or baked goods. Sorry for the confusion. I'm not that bad about sugar to eat it plain. Thanks
|
I'm a teacher here, but it's not really a stressful job... I've had worse. Too be honest, I'm was way more stressed when I got the 72 result than I am now. I'm currently taking ALA Fish oil, could that elevate it as well?
|
Daniella:
I'm so sorry. You said: "I could eat sugar plain and I mean that" I took you literally. I am so sorry. But from what you have indicated, you have a sweet tooth and you would like not to have a sweet tooth, right?? Habits, Habits, Habits. That's all this sweet tooth stuff really is. A bad habit. You can try and replace this with another habit. That's exactly what I did. I used to zone out in front of the tv at night with bags of chips, dips, ding dongs and whatever. Really medicated my brain. I felt nothing. Then I learned and I re-trained my brain not to do this. Now I get excited about salads. It's so funny. The other day I was describing my salad to a friend over the phone. I said "oh you should see what I created. Romaine Lettuce with grape tomatoes, sliced radishes, diced zucchinis, sliced red onions, 5 small sliced black olives, a bit of croutons and a spash of extra virgin olive oil, a dash of fresh squeezed lemon juice, and fresh ground pepper. Add a bit of sea salt, and you're in heaven". My friend burst out laughing over the phone and said "you've got to be kidding, you're excited about your salad???" and I said 'it's absolutely delicious". And she said "but it's a salad" and I said: "yeah, but you don't understand" and then I went on to describe all the colors in the salad and the greens and where it's going into my body and how healthy, etc." I said "now imagine eating a steak" and she said "now you're talking" and I said "now, imagine this. you're eating a dead animal" and she stopped in her tracks and said 'but I don't look at a steak that way". And I said "but I do". I walked her through the steps it takes for the cow to ultimately be the piece of meat on her plate. (My goal is to someday be a complete vegetarian but I must admit, I like my fish, and it really manages my blood sugar very well.) So I re-trained my brain to look at food differently. I did that with chips and ding dongs and sweets. I just imagined where all those refined carbohydrates are going into my body. I imagined it breaking down in my digestive system, and all the bacteria growing and increasing my sugar reading. Believe me, it works for me. I wouldn't touch an ice cream sundae or a piece of cake. I just learned to look at food differently and try to picture it as fuel and think of where it's going in my body. I don't crave sweets anymore. But I do have one of my home-made blueberry muffins every day. It satisfies me and I imagine what the blueberries (all the anti-oxidants in them) well, I just imagine them doing their anti-oxidant thing in my body. The imaging of the salad works because it's all fresh, healthy, fiber and it is absolutely spot on delicious. I eat a salad every single day. Sometimes for dinner also (with some grilled chicken). I may change the veggies, but it's always romaine, clean and washed and the other ingredients. It's crunchy and satisfying and does not impact my sugar. I should have done this 30 years ago but who had brains 30 years ago??? Not me. lol So now I have brains. You take care and do the imaging thing. Melody |
New special diet & question for Mrs. D
Melody,:)
Thank you for that post. When my husband took me to Mayo I only weighed 123lbs at 5' 7" tall. Mayo's dietician and Gastro looked me over and told me that I was anorexic (never had been before) because I was so thin. But it was a learned habit. My mouth didn't like spicy, hard, chewy, or chrunchy things because of the dryness from Sjogren's. So I ate home made chicken soup, ground chicken patties baked, baked potatoe with plain yougurt, no bread, nothing sweet except buttered carrots. But Mayo told me that I'd have to eat xx number of calories a day just to maintain my weight. They told me that I'd die without those calories. Well I had fought much too hard to go on living in my limited way so......I ate and I ate like they told me to, even things I didn't like. Rich creams, Ensure added to my cream soup bases, etc. My brain unlearned the anorexia after we got home with one simple increase of the Lyrica. My tongue is still as dry as it was and I'm sure as tender, but the Lyrica cuts down the pain in it. So I ate, and ...ate and I'm still eating. But now I've got to unlearn the eating. I'm gaining too much weight and it isn't comfortable. I'm up to 150 and I'd like to be thin again so I'm now going to use Melody's diet to eat and get this weight off. Good by apple pies, ice cream, lattes, etc. (you got the idea) So I'm telling you that learning to eat is just that. Decide how you are going to eat and then learn it. After a while you will not want to eat any other way. I'll learn to eat thin again and it will work. But the secret to not getting tired of it, is to allow yourself whatever you are craving, but only ONE (1) small 1/2 cup serving. And don't do it often. I have a little bowl that will only hold 1/2 cup and my husband and I call it Billye's Little Bitty Goody Bowl. I'm determined to go to my husband's Kiwanis Christmas Banquet. My second social outing in a year. I have a lovely new silk pantset to wear...teal pants with a long tunic coat of brown silk cut in the oriental look at the collar. And new brown rope of pearls (I made them) necklace and earrings to wear. Now if I could just find a shoe I could wear. Also found a tiny silk brocade purse on a long strap to carry. Won't I look elegant??!! But............I have to lose about 10 lbs. That's enough just 10. I can do it, can't I, inspite of all the meds? I need some help here folks. I am refusing Prednisone. I will not gain that weight, have that look or that temperment. I will make it without it. I'm strong. You realize all of you, don't you? This is a huge peptalk to me. And I'm really looking for some support that I can do the diet and not take the prednisone. The doctor says that if my sed rate isn't down in the blood work he's doing next week, it's Prednisone for me. I'm telling him no there has to be something else. We've raised the methotrexate as high as we can. We'll have to use something besides Prednisone. Mrs. D...what is the best choice do you think? I'm sorry this is so long. Love, Billye |
high dose fish oil...
has anti-inflammatory properties. But with your hidden bleed, I don't know if it is safe for you.
I had a patient with an autoimmune kidney flare...he was near to dialysis, and his doctor found a paper from China describing high dose fish oil for it. He took 13 grams a day with doctor supervision, and it stopped the kidney damage. Later when I was counseling him, on his heavy use of Zantac etc, we ended up with the gluten free diet. I guided him to how to do it, and this further improved his GI and kidney functions. Needless to say he was very very happy with the result. He was in his early 40's and it was dunning to have to look at dialysis and a kidney transplant. Here is a paper on inflammatory issues seen in cancer, and the benefits of fish oil (6 grams/day) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/en...ubmed_RVDocSum another : http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/en...ubmed_RVDocSum http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/en...ubmed_RVDocSum This one shows positive anti-inflammatory effects with Omega-3s http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/en...RVAbstractPlus But the doses you would need Billye, should be monitored by a doctor, as they will thin the blood, more than lower doses will. |
Billye:
The outfit sounds TO DIE FOR!!!! And Teal!!! Well, that itself is the color of Queens. It's so regal. I bet you will look like one million bucks. As for the 10 pounds. (And I don't know if you have to go on the Prednisone, and if you do, well, you do, and that's all there is to it). But face the day as if you won't and your brain will kick in and help you out. Since you have dry mouth and can't eat crunch hard veggies, why not do what Jerry Seinfeld's wife said to do??? She was on Oprah Winfrey last week and she just wrote a book on how to get your kids to eat veggies when they absolutely refuse to eat them. How do you do this? By pureeing every vegetable and sneaking them into their food. Now you don't have to sneak anything ito your food because you like veggies right? But you can't eat them the way they come off the tree or the root or whatever. You have to make them easy to swallow. So take some fresh brocoli, some zuccini, some carrots, and put them in a blender until they are ground up fine. Then you can spray pam in the frying pan, put the ground up veggies in the pan, and cook until very tender. You will then have veggies that are easy to put in your mouth, easy to swallow and you will get your fiber. You can make mashed potatoes (just leave out the butter, and add some smart balance), and a sprinkle of parmesan). There's another soft dish for you to eat. And don't get me started on fish That alone is soft, easy to make, and cooks in 5 minutes. So there's your dinner. Cooked puree veggies, soft mashed potato, and a piece of fish. Then after dinner, you can reach into that snack bowl of yours and indulge. You've earned it. For Breakfast, there's always oatmeal, or scambled eggs. That's soft and can't be too hard to eat, right?? Lunch can be some soup, either home-made or one of those reduced fat Cambell or Progresso. Progresso makes a light soup that is very good. About 120 calories. I mean, you can't go wrong with 120 calories, right. All you have to lose is 10 more lbs, right??? You eat like this until Christmas (and if you're able), take a walk every day for 30 minutes. The pounds will drop. Guess what I just ate??? One of my muffins, with a nice cup of Dunkin Donuts Coffee. I tell you, this coffee is addicting. The smell alone goes to my brain. It's pure heaven. But then, I learned how NOT to have two egg mcmuffins, hash browns, sausages, etc. for breakfast. All bad choices. Now I make better choices. My body is the better for it. So you go girl. You put on that Teal Outfit, take a picture and show us. And if, by chance you have to go on the prednisone, don't worry, we'll get you throught that too!!! Melody |
Apologize for that one
Sorry, blame it on Mel. She got me too jazzed up to sleep last night so you got that rambling post. Sometimes I have to let it all out and you guys get it. Anyway, the idea is how can I get that inflammation marker down safely. I'll double my fish oil, and clean up my diet. I got off the gluten free diet while we were at Mayo and haven't been back on it again. Mayo told me I didn't need it but I do believe it's the way to diet. No flour equals no bread or pastry's or gravy. But you can eat that way. I did for a long long time. And I know a lot of you do that.
Thanks for all your support ......and patience. :o Billye |
Now I'm getting blamed for getting you into that outfit??
You will fit in that outfit. You will fit in that outfit.
Like the little engine that could. Hopefully you won't have to go on prednisone but hey, if you have to, you may be like the 26 year old around the corner. She was on it for two months. Did not impact her weight one bit. Her face never got the moon face look. I always thought that if a person took prednisone, that they had to look like Jerry Lewis eventually. Well, the girl around the corner looked perfectly fine. So don't worry too much. You'll be fine. And keep rambling. Keeps us on our toes. lol, Melody P.S. I once took the fish oil. Made me go to the bathroom like crazy. I eat fish 5 times a week. I wonder if I have to take the fish oil also?? It's a good question. I'm hestitant to go back to taking it because it went right through me. Maybe once a week??? |
Hi. Thanks and sorry again. Anyhow I can relate to Silverlady somewhat. I think from 16 to 27 I lived very underweight. When I really moved toward recovery I had to gain 45 pounds to be at the minimum. I did this but the calorie level to do this was like 4500 a day. I had to retrain my mind to think of food and weight has meds. So I understand the mental side. The thing is like Silverlady said to eat this amount I often chose not the healthiest foods but that was ok in the eyes of treatment cause at least I was gaining. Now I'm still thin but my eating habits are not the best. My nutritionist does say its common for a year after to still have a sugar issue because your mind is still starved which makes it turn to glucose. I will offer some tips she has told me. First eat every few hours, balance of carbs/protein/fat,don't save calories that means balance calories through day.
Melody as for fish oil do you eat other sources of healthy omegas like olive oil, walnuts, flax seed. Watch the flax though cause that can make people go. Silverlady good luck on your change as well. Remember balance and small goals. You need nurishment and you don't want a quick fix to go back. Its about lifestyle.Oh yeah Melody congrats on your new way of living |
A lot of us who have gone gluten-free--
--without the actual evidence of celiac, or even gluten sensitivity from positive anti-gliadin tests, have done so due to the possible inflammatory and "intestinal-spreading" properties of gluten (see "zonulin" and "tight junction dysfunction"), but we've also noticed that, as long as we don't substitute with additional rice or potatoes, we're actually on a low-carb diet that is good for slow weight loss.
In essence, we're doing a modified version of the Atkins diet, without some of the extremes, like heavy saturated fat consumption, that many have been critical of with that plan. (We also tend to be fairly big on fruits and vegetables of all kinds, which the stricter Atkins people would not agree with, but which we need for the nutrients.) I also tend to think that the Zone approach is helpful--small, frequent meals that balance far/carbs/protein and help to keep blood sugar swings to a minimum. Even the paleo- or Neolithic diet seems helpful in this regard--eating as many unprocessed foods as possible and trying to make one's diet much like our hunter-gatherer ancestors'. What all of these approaches have in common is an emphasis on avoiding simple and/or processed carbohydrates. There seems to be increasing evidence that these are worse for our metabolism in the long run than even considerable amounts of fat and protein (except for trans-fats, which really should be outlawed entirely, if that's possible). So go at it Billye--give up the wheat and the white, and have a lot of orange, red, and green. |
Yeah!!!! Let's hear it for Orange Red and Green.
And Throw in some Yellow stuff too!!!! White stuff -- BAAAADD. Green Stuff (and color stuff) - GOOOOOD Oh, (and sorry to go off topic but this is funny). and it has to do with food because this happened at my local grocery store. Now what would all of you do if you saw a grown woman in front of you and she has a beautiful body (she was about 35), and she had on a very nice pants outfit. A short crop top and low rider jeans. Now what would you do if you saw her bending over and the pants are falling to the crack of her you know what?? Well, when she stood up, the pants were still there (still showing the top of her you know what). So as I moved my shopping cart up to her, I very politely said (in a very low voice), "excuse me but your pants are falling down ". And she looks at me, she checks her BEHIND!!! and she gives me a look and says "Oh no, they're not". And I said "They're not???" oh my god, excuse me". And I headed for the other aisle. Believe me, a person could be standing there nude, from this day on, and I won't open my mouth. Never again!!! mel |
don't forget:
RED, BLUE and PURPLE!
These have tons of antioxidants which also help with inflammation. The new V8 fusion with the pomegranate/blueberry base is just excellent. No added sugars, high in potassium, and is one full serving of vegetables and fruits. (minimum per day recommended is 5 and best is 8). It is made with purple carrots! I've never even seen purple carrots! :yikes: I can't even taste the veggies in it. We did have some purple green beans last night that I found at the farmer's market, but when I steamed those, the purple went away and they turned green. So I was a bit disappointed with them. I've been having one of these juices a day at breakfast and they are very good. I bought them in 12 pks at Costco. But there are large ones in the grocery now. |
Mrs. D.
Can a diabetic have this new V8 Fusion drink? I have had V8 juice for breakfast (it's been a while though, cause I'm not a breakfast juice person). But if this thing has anti-oxidants, it could be crimson, and I'll drink it. I just don't want it to impact my sugar reading. What do you think?? |
comparison:
V8 12 oz has 70 cal.
V8 V-fusion pomegranate has 150 cal in 12oz. This is natural juice..no sugar added. This means natural fructose-- not other sugars-- diabetic diets allow for some fructose as a slow sugar. Vit A 20% cal 2% vit E 20% mag 6% vit C 150% iron 2% folic acid 2% potassium 370mg sod very low 90mg I don't know how you figure your carb allowances. But this has far more antioxidants than V8- I like V8 too, esp after working out..but the sodium tends to get me. The low Sodium one tastes terrible I think. made from sweet potatoes, purple carrots, tomatoes, apple, white grape, pomegranate, and blueberry. |
Wow!
Thanks all of you!
Great suggestions and reminders for a healthy diet. Part of the weight gain is from lack of inactivity due to the inflammation and joints I'm sure. But part of it has to do with unlearning habits I formed due to having to gain weight. Daniella, you are right. The body just craves carbs after it has been denied them for so long. I've printed this thread to give me reminders. Mrs. D, I'm going to look for the Fusion. I had to quit drinking the regular V8 too because of the sodium. Glenn, I'm googling the gluten and inflammatory links. I did really great until tonight when my husband got out the ice cream. Drat it, got to unlearn, unlearn, unlearn!! Billye |
I'm going to try some V8 fusion and see what happens to my sugar. If it doesn't go up, then it's a keeper. I find that fish is wonderful for my sugar reading. I have no idea why but it is.
And Billye: Get the low-fat, no sugar added ice cream. It's better than the other kind. I haven't had ice cream in about 5 years. God I miss those days. But it's a trigger for me. In my house, all you will find is a cabbage patch full of veggies in my refrigerator. And fish. And hopefully tomorrow, V8 fusion. Mel |
Melody I think if you have some protein with the drink it will help with blood sugar level so maybe some cheese or turkey for example. Also fruit and vegetables in the whole because of fiber helps with blood sugar levels. Silverlady I think trying to switch to whole grain carbs and also don't they mak v8 in low sodium or maybe a place like whole foods would carry similar if you like it.
For a somewhat icecream like treat if you freeze yogurt its really good. I also tried greek yogurt and that is very good. Its different then regular yogurt but more protein and less sugar. |

Pants style
Hi Melody:
It seems to be a current style among some young people, usually teenagers, to wear low slung trousers and pants. For some the object is to reveal the tops of the underwear and obviously for others the skin remains bare. Along with this may go a too large pant size, leading to bagging down half the inner legs. Who can explain teenage styles? I have often wondered what the point is of the baggy pants but don't have the nerve to ask any of the wearers. Too large pants also make walking precarious and lead to much hiking up of the waistline and an occasional stumble and fall. Well, who can explain the "bustles" of yesteryear? I don't know what the point of those were, either. Does anyone here know? Shirley H. |
Purpose of bustles
Hi Everyone:
Just learned on Google the purpose of bustles. Shirley H. |
Thats funny. A couple of my friends where hip huggers those are the names of the pants that show the crack. You can see their thong and some with the tatoo. I think this is weird but always have been "old" for my age or a little discreat I guess. Melody I can see you saying that. Funny!
|
Well, I'm glad you all think it was funny. Believe me, if you saw the look this over 30 person gave me, well, I just wanted to slink away. As a matter of fact, that's exactly what I did do, SLINK AWAY!!!! You know what I don't get?? Well, I DO get the teen thing, they are trying to express themselves, with their various piercings, (even their tongue), and the 50 earrings on one ear, and the pants down around their thighs with the underwear showing (these are what the teen boys do aroundhere). And if the person were a 17 year old young girl, I would have smiled and said "oh, she's just expressing herself.
But this was 35 year old (maybe older), gal with a fabulous body, in a grocery store, bending over the eggs. Not a pretty picture.j And what's with all the pregnant girls showing their bellies?? This is do not get. They are walking around my neighborhood, 7 or more months pregnant and wearing crop tops. Anyone see those around where you live? You should have seen the expression on Alan's face the first time he saw a young pregnant girl's belly bump. The look he gave me was priceless. I believe his exact words were "doesn't she know the top doesn't fit her?" I laughed, but I was thinking the same thing. Then I found out, that's the look she was aiming for. Oh for the good old day!!!!! I'd even wear a bustle if I had to!!! lol Mel P.S. I realize this is a thread about blood sugar spiking. Sorry to have hijacked it.!! |
I wouldn't worry about hijacking the thread. This is a support group, not just a medical encyclopedia location. Sometimes a good laugh is what people need, and chatting to develop a relationship can result in a lot of emotional support when you need it due to stresses over chronic pain. That is just my humble opinion -- I know others feel differently. But I can get factual information a lot of places. This is the only place I get relationships from people who actually know what I am suffering first hand. You cheer me up when I am down!
|
Oh just to inform all of you, tonight Alan and I are hopping on the access-a-ride and we are heading off to the Neuropathy Support Group Meeting. It's in the CBS Building in NYC.
Should be interesting. Will tell you all about it when I return home. Just cross your fingers and toes that the Access a Ride shows up on time and we get there. They've hung up us before. Melody |
I agree Melody you always lift my spirits by your story. I need a little "happy" in my life. Do you have to get around I assume NY by public transportation always? I know parking is so expensive but I can't imagine doing that with the pain level. I remember when I was 18 I moved to Chicago and lasted a week. It was winter and waiting for transportation I just could not get with. Ny is a fun place though. I lived in NJ about an hour away and would go to NY sometimes. I love broadway shows. Ok keep us updated.

I haven't taken a train in NYC, well, I can't remember when I last took a train. You have all kinds of nuts riding the subways today. They'll march right up to you and take whatever you are holding and walk away. They also just ride the subways all day and all night. Very unstable people. It's quite a shame.
Alan is not afraid to take a train. It's hard on him because he wears the Cam Walker. But he hates to call Access-a-ride because they always keep you waiting. Up to one hour sometimes. Buses are usually okay except if you have arthritis because if you don't get a seat, you have to hold onto the bar on top, and the bus pitches back and forth and wrenches your arms, and the bus is usually filled with school kids who are absolutely crazy. Their language, their screaming, and their complete disregard for adults is absolutely appalling. I try not to take a bus after 1 because that's when the teens come on (with their cell phones), and they scream and try to impress each other. I really think there should be a complete separate transportation system for people over the age of 50. Maybe I'm wrong for feeling this way, but I've seen and heard too much. It's really nasty what goes on. The other day Alan was coming home from one of his appointments. There was a man on the bus directing people where to sit. He was bossing everyone around. The driver told him to "sit down and zip it". Alan was standing (wearing the shoe boot thing), and the guy started messing with Alan (don't mess with my Rocky by the way). So Alan whips out his security guard identification badge and calmly tells the guy that if he doesn't start behaving he will be arrested. The guy sneered (he was obviously unstable) and started muttering to himself. The bus driver thanked Alan. (See why I dont' like to ride public transportation???). I usually take Access-a-ride everywhere I have to go. The people are very nice, you get to talk for as long as the ride takes and people are very friendly. There are no screaming crazy kids pushing and pulling. Maybe I'm getting old, but really, the younger generation is completely out of control. Just my take on the NYC transportation system. Mel |
Melody that would be a nice idea about over 50. I don't know if it will happen but nice idea. I agree about young people. I was meant to have grown up in the olden days. Its always nice when someone holds a door open but guys my age its one in a million. Well I hope all goes well.
