Question about noise coming from my computer!!!
Okay, this happened about a year ago. I was moving my HP Pavilion Media Center (the tower) around on my computer desk. I must have bumped it, or did something because as soon as I did this, it started to make a noise. Can't quite remember what that noise was but it was a noisy sound coming from inside the computer once you turn it on. Now I said to myself "I can't work at this desk with this humming thing, (or whatever noise it was making), so I took a book that was maybe an inch and half in width. I propped this book under the back of the computer and BINGO, no more noise. I said 'Oh, okay". that's it.
So no noise for one year. Yesterday, I was cleaning out the whole room, and I said to myself "I wonder what would happen if I took the book away". And I did. And there still was no noise. So I said "well, last year this thing made a noise, I put the book under it, the noise stopped". "I'm good to go", and I was for the whole year. So I remove the book thinking, Uh oh, the noise will probably come back, and there was just silence. I've turned it on and off since yesterday and still quiet. I'm extremely happy about his but what I want to know is what the heck happened last year that made the noise, and why did the book propping underneath stop the noise, and how come yesterday, I remove the book and it's still quiet. So all you people who have heard noises coming from your tower, do you know why this has happened?? I'm not complaining. It's quiet and if it ever starts that horrible noise up again, I'll just put the book back. I just am very curious. Thanks, Melody |
Hey, ((((((Melody)))))),
You can get a job in high tech http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...R/roflmao2.gif (if you can find enough books)!! I imagine it was probably something like the fan being loose. When you balanced it out, it probably slipped back to where it's supposed to be. It's probably still loose, but seated correctly, so it doesn't really show up now. Wow!! A world-class muffin-maker and a http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...LE/changer.gif ("Jill of All Trades"). I'm impressed  :D Hugs. There's cables inside the box and you might have bumped it enough to make the cable touch the fan blades and then it went back into place after the book propping and removing the book.
often the extra length of the cables just hang loose inside and can flop around if the box is bumped or tilted. here's a picture -but it has the cables folded and tucked in nicely out of the way- http://www.building-your-own-compute...ase_inside.jpg |
Thanks so much Jo:
At least it's quiet. Want to hear something very strange. Sometimes, my Outlook Express won't open so I tried to go to Verizon and get my e-mail there. It would only give me my husband's email address. So I called Verizon online DSL tech support and I told her I had Mozilla and she had me go to tools, options, and clear all the cookies and the passwords. Then I went back to Verizon and put in my user ID and password and there were 1,100 unread messages. Now how can that be?? I never go to view my email at Verizon. I use Outlook Express and I delete it when I'm finished with it. Am I to understand that at least once a week I have to go to my Verizon, com e-mail thing, and check the unread stuff over there??? If Outlook Express is my default email thing, why was there over 1000 unread messages at the Verizon email place? Do you have any ideas?? Thanks, Melody P.S. I deleted all of the stuff and immediately my outlook express started working just fine. I do not understand what is going on. |
It may be set up somewhere to store copies of your messages?
did they look like any that you might have read before? I think in the Outlook express go to Tools - then Options I think the maintenance tab is the one - look at the settings there for clean up and such and then possibly go back online to Verizon and check the settings there |
Jo:
I have only 5 messages in my Outlook Express Inbox. I just went to my Verizon Mail box and there were 25 unread messages. So this is what is happening. I believe Outlook is my default e-mail service thing. But any emails I get, I first get them at Verizon, and they automatically get re-sent to Outlook. And even though I delete them on Outlook, they are still over there on Verizon. So how do I stop all this keeping of the messages at Verizon. I mean, I never go there. If I had not gone there earlier today, I would have never known that I had over 1000 unread messages. I think I have to do this once or twice a week. I have to go to Verizon and delete the stuff (that I have already deleted in Outlook). Mozilla firefox has an email thingee also. Anybody use this? Melody |
Yep - I do it's called Thunderbird, I recomend it over Outlook Express too.
It has a built in spam filters {spamPal or spam assasin} that you can train when needed by marking messages as junk or not junk. |
Okay, here's my next question. I have Verizon Online DSL. I have Outlook Express as my default e-mail thing. So the mail goes over to Verizon, which kicks it over to Outlook Express (do I have this right???).
Does the Thunderbird thing work like this to??? If I download Thunderbird, can I make that my default email thingee. So I would naturally delete Outlook express, and then if Thunderbird is my default then any emails would first go to Verizon, and then be kicked into the Thunderbird thing. Do I have this right?? Jeez, the stuff you have to learn when you are 60 years old!!!! Years ago, we had something called a telephone. Now they refer to it as a landline. Jeez... lol |
Outlook express {OE} & Thunderbird {Tbird} are called "pop" mail clients
short version is they access your Verizon email account and get your messages that way - so when you open OE or Tbird it will either, depending on your set up it, go get the messages or may wait until you click the get messages button - mine is set to get them on opening with my password. that's why you have to put in the account & passwords info when you set them up. If you get tbird you can also import all your OE stuff during setup, just like Firefox did with IE settings. then you would set Tbird as your default email - you can still keep OE but Tbird would be the main use one |
Ah, I see. In your expert humble opinion, which one is the better and more reliable one. Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird??
Thanks much!!! Mel |
Mozilla Thunderbird , mainly because of the better security & built in spam tools.
|
Okay, let's see if I have this correct. I download Mozilla Thunderbird, and follow prompts, right??
The time I did the Outlook Express, the tech guy had to walk me through this. HOw do I do this Thunderbird thing alone. Will it change my stuff in Outlook and bring it over to Thunderbird?? Do you understand what I'm trying to learn here?? Thanks so much. Melody |
If I remember correctly it will import the address book and the mail settings during the set up/install
Pretty much like the firefox did with the IE settings and favorites. but if you get stuck or the settings don't get transferred just ask I'll find the verizon central email section that has the info you need http://netservices.verizon.net/porta...oblem=settings User name settings * Your user name (for example, username@verizon.net) * Your password Mail server settings * Incoming mail server (POP3): incoming.yahoo.verizon.net * Outgoing mail server (SMTP): outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net * Your user name * Your password the messages themselves - if you have any saved you can import them at any time or just keep OE and open it if you need to look up the saved stuff. This will be easier that the very first time with OE because of the importing during setup /install |
Well, I don't know if I'm coming or going, but I'll give it a try.
Wish me luck, I'll update later. Melody. P.S. Thanks so much |
Okay, now I'm totally confused.
I did exactly as you said. I downloaded it, I imported all the stuff, it prompted me if I wanted to use Mozilla Thunderbird as my default e-mail client. I said yes. Then it opened up Alan's e-mail. Now in outlook express, Alan's email was the primary email and we had two other sub accounts. mine was: let's use... MelodyLub@verizon.net Now, when I would sign on to Outlook express, there would be my husband's email up on the screen. Then I would go to File, switch identity, click on the name Melody, and it would immediately switch to my e-mail. So just now, I have Alan's email up on the screen, I go to File, and THERE IS NO SWITCH IDENTITY!!!! So please tell me how I get my own email through thunderbird??? UPDATE....UPDATE....UPDATE....UPDATE...... I just went to Thunderbird and guess what?? It combined my husband's email and my email. Now why on earth would it do that. There are 85 emails in this thing. Some are Alan's and some are mine. Oh my god. Please help me before I have a breakdown... lol NEVER MIND!!!! I just uninstalled the entire thing. Outlook Express is now, once again, my default program. Why did I do this?? Because I'm 60 years old, and I know Outlook Express. When I saw 85 combined emails, I pictured Alan's face and said "this is not worth it". He likes stuff nice and easy on the computer. I know that there had to be a way to separate the accounts, and we each have our own, but until I learned how to do this, I will turn 70 years old. lol. Jo, thanks so much. If I don't lose my mind over this, I turn 60 on November 4th. Oh thank god, I still get Outlook Express. I almost lost my mind. Two hours on this stuff. Going to watch my soaps. Melody |
Ahhh, I see yes that would be a little bit tricky.
I was assuming you each had separate profiles on the whole computer, I forgot about OE having having the switch identity thing. Well if in the future you want to try again or if OE is messing up again there are a couple ways around the identity thing. Either set up 2 Tbird accounts - 1 for each of you and give them a name {rename the icon} so you know which is which. like Alans email & Mels email Or set it up like I have on my computer- What I did on my computer is set up separate User Accounts in the control panel for each of us - hubby, daughter, boys and me. There's also a Guest account if you have anyone else that might use it. The welcome screen opens up and we each have our own icon to click and then log onto, you can have a password or not. I log on to my account/profile and they can each log on to theirs. I am the administrator for the computer, the others have limited accounts. That also keeps anyone from making problematic changes or deleting anything of mine or messing up the computer. So if you did that your email would only be on your side and his would only be on his side. Anyway that's a whole other topic LOL |
Jo:
I have no idea why I thought that I would have my own e-mail and Alan would have his. I really thought "well, I'll download Thunderbird, and I'll switch identity", like in Outlook. Don't think so!!! And when I told Alan what happened, all he could say was "oh my god, is my email still there??" I said "not to worry, I restored everything back and you have yours and I have mine'. I can only imagine him sitting down to 147 e-mails and not knowing which belonged to who!!!! Like I said "he likes this easy" on the computer. While I'm walking through Window Updates, my husband likes to go on Youtube. I will never forget last year. I have no idea what was happening, but my computer wasn't doing what it was supposed to do. I called my computer genius son (who was laying on his bed and was NOT in front of his computer). He said "have you done any window updates? and I said "oh, it does it by itself, when I sign off". He sighed and said "go in front of your computer". Then he must have walked me through 100 steps, one after the other, (all the while, laying on his bed). I thought he was in front of his own computer doing the same thing. When I got to the last step, I asked him "you were doing this while I was doing mine, right?" and he said "No, I'm laying on the bed". I said 'what do you mean, you just walked me through 100 steps (over 45 minutes, believe me), and where the heck were you? and he said 'lying down, I was picturing your computer screen in my head. See, he has Aspergers Disorder, he's a computer genius and he knows absolutely everything about computers. You might be thinking, why didn't I go to him instead of going on this board? If you think I'm going to ask him to walk me through setting up an email account and have him laugh his *** off at me, well forget it. So he's an aspie, he can probably build his own computer. He runs configs (whatever that is). Too bad he doesn't work. He would be some tech support person. Oh well. I can't thank you enough. Melody |
I thought this started out as a noise problem. I know that fans can become quite noisy, especially if a bearing is burning out. How did it become an OE versus Thunderbird argument? You can get inexpensive replacement fans that are fairly easy to install.
|
could be vibrations from many sorces wires fan hard drive, hopefully you clean it out reguraly vacuum the dust bummys from fans and vents cause a clotted fan will also make noise too

we got the noise thing figured out and she had another question about emails. |
