It sucks to be me!

I had a light bulb moment! I think I finally know why I have stomach pains every day and all night long.

It sucks to be me!

Ready for this one?

Milk and milk products.

:thud::Hum::Sob::Noooo::mad:

So what does that mean?

No more milk, cheese, butter, cottage cheese, ice cream, yogurt, what am I missing?

Man, my whole refrig looks like a Dairy Barn!

Well, at least my tummy doesn't hurt!

Still, I want my ice cream!

SallyC 10-20-2007 06:05 PM

Darn, Taffy, that really does suck.:( I guess that means no milk chocolate too....NOOOOOO!!!!

I'm glad I had already had my little dish of chocy ice cream before reading your post or I would feel terribly guilty..:p

There must be something with MS that causes us to develope alergies that we never had before.

Have a brownie of something else as sinful. It'll make you feel better.:D

MSacorn 10-20-2007 06:18 PM

Awww Taffy :(

I don't know :Dunno: what to say, except that bites!

Glad your tummy's feeling better, but at such a cost to the taste buds ...

Unfair - Unfair - Unfair (stomping foot, arms crossed and pouting)

Taffy 10-20-2007 07:31 PM

There is milk in milk chocolates? Say it ain't so!

Maybe not enough to hurt my stomach....

Maybe it is not real milk!

AfterMyNap 10-21-2007 09:16 AM

I love that song! I saw Avenue Q a couple years ago and loved it enough to get the whole soundtrack! Ahem...

Sotty, are we talking about lactose intolerance here? Spill it (not the milk, don't want any useless crying).

dorrie 10-21-2007 10:07 AM

:sorry: Taffy....that must be a drag...but I am glad that your tummy is feeling better:hug:

tovaxin_lab_rat 10-21-2007 10:25 AM

Oh geez, Taffy....what are you going to do?:(

I think there is a medication you can take for being lactose intolerant. Check it out.

A drug? Oh probably! Right now....no milk to make sure that is the problem. So far so good.

Then another pill.

My ice cube tray that holds my daily pills (RXS, vitamins, etc) will be flowing over! On the bright side, if I take any more pills, I won't have to eat!

What's up??? Come and talk to you.. We worry about you..

(AMN is holding my arm behind my back making me say that):D

greta 10-29-2007 08:18 PM

T-
Not to worry. With a little time, you too can get used to soy products!

Soy you say...Blech!! I hear you. I thought they were revolting, repulsive, very, very sad excuses for dairy, but I'm here to say - it's ok! In fact, it's more than ok!

If you can find a trader joe's anywhere near you - head on out. Mine is 60 minutes away but it's worth it for the cheese. Soy sation is a cheddar/mozzarella mix. It tastes good, it melts good, and unlike most other soy cheese - it doesn't smell like stinky feet. they also make a really good soy mozzarella. Believe me - I'm a cheese freak, but I'm learning to love these! Galaxy foods also makes a good soy parmesan (can't tell the difference). I even made lasagna for DH the other day - he said it was the best he'd ever had...

Soy and rice milk are good substitutes - I really like the vanilla flavor, but chocolate flavor is good too with ice!

Haven't ventured out to soy yogurt and soy ice cream yet, but I will. I'm trying to become dairy free (eventually) using baby steps. You can do this!

Taffy 10-29-2007 08:38 PM

So.....brought home the vanilla soy milk and poured a glass of the yellow stuff. Convinced DH to try to first! (Sucker) Yum! You will like it he said!

Sure, (he lies) but, since I had my big girl panties on that day, I took a little sip!

Holy cow! Or, Holy Soy Bean! That stuff is not bad! I just might live after all!

Now, does anyone know how to make pumpkin pie with soy milk?

Can't you just use a pumpkin??

Glad to see you, Dippy, we were worried!

Hmmm, I was thinking the same thing, but since I can't quote you :p

I will just think it to myself.

But thinking outloud - here's a recipe for you Taffy:
3/4 cup sugar
1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1 can (15 oz.) 100% pumpkin
1 1/4 cups soy milk
2 large eggs

AfterMyNap 10-30-2007 05:35 PM

Isn't that just a direct substitution for the milk? So, basically, out side of quiche, it's an even swap for milk?

sort of looks that way to me! I asked my neighbor about it cuz she uses soy milk a lot - her kid is lactose intolerant. She says it substitutes straight across. ;)

Taffy 10-30-2007 06:50 PM

Just use a pumpkin for my pumpkin pie!

(jokers!)

I will look at that recipe plus I googled it.

Thanks.........

I did. Yesterday.

Now today. Where are those hunger pains? (looking around) Where did they go? Is it too much to ask to be somewhat normal and just feel hungry more than once?

I know, I know...I will never be normal again!:Noooo:

But it was nice to feel like I was starving to death. I had forgotten what that felt like!

kebsa 11-19-2007 04:45 AM

there is a product you can get from health food shops to help you cope with milk and milk products, its not a drug as such but an enzyme that people who are lactose intilerant do not produce. I am not sure what it is called in the US be the brand name here is lactaid

Hello Taffy,
I'm sorry to hear about your milk allergy. My husband and his brother have had them since birth, so we have always used SILK which is a SOY Milk product in place of milk in our home. I think the Soy milk is sweeter than regular milk, and there are some studies that say Soy is better for your heart health. We simply substitute the SILK for milk in all recipes, and the good thing is it lasts a LOT longer than regular milk.

Kebsa is correct. Lactaid is used for people with lactose intolerances, and can be bought over the counter at any grocer or pharmacy. Once you get used to using all soy products, you won't miss milk after a while. They even make Ice-Cream sandwiches with soy milk that you can buy at the grocer. We've lived near a Trader Joe's ever since we were married, and they have many items geared towards people who only consume soy rather than milk products. I think you can even go online and buy some of their goodies. They have a lot of GREAT food there, and some of their sauces are just out of this world. I give some of their foods away as Christmas gifts, and when we have secret santas at our office parties.

I'm glad you feel better.:)

All the best,
Chris
