For those who want to enter into a little pool--
--my son suggested we start the "what will Glenn weigh by Monday morning" contest.
This morning, the (totally unreliable) bathroom scale listed me at 209.2 pounds (it's digital). Guesses can be made in tenths of a pound. Closest winds all the non-gluten cranberry-corn muffins I have not consumed by then. Admittedly, prize may be minimal. Happy Thanksgiving. |
Enjoy your day tomorrow
Everyone.
Here is a video of a most unusual guest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aJJ6...cute_overload/ |

I wish you all a great day in your celebrations, i know you guys will get a laugh out of this, but can someone tell me what is Thanks giving day
|
The Pilgrim's first Thanksgiving was held in 1621, to celebrate the harvest reaped by the Plymouth Colony after a harsh winter. In that year Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving. The colonists celebrated it as a traditional English harvest feast, to which they invited the local Wampanoag Indians.
Days of thanksgiving were celebrated throughout the colonies after fall harvests. All 13 colonies did not, however, celebrate Thanksgiving at the same time until October 1777. George Washington was the first president to declare the holiday, in 1789. By the mid-1800s, many states observed a Thanksgiving holiday. Meanwhile, the poet and editor Sara Josepha Hale had begun lobbying for a national Thanksgiving holiday. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, looking for ways to unite the nation, discussed the subject with Hale. In 1863 he gave his Thanksgiving Proclamation, declaring the last Thursday in November a day of thanksgiving. In 1939, 1940, and 1941 Franklin D. Roosevelt, seeking to lengthen the Christmas shopping season, proclaimed Thanksgiving the third Thursday in November. Controversy followed, and Congress passed a joint resolution in 1941 decreeing that Thanksgiving should fall on the fourth Thursday of November, where it remains. http://www.teachervision.fen.com/tha...tory/2414.html |
Thanks Curious for such a detailed history of the event, i found it an interesting read, enjoy your day and your turkeys everyone :D
thanks again Brian :) |
it really gives us a day to just stop the hustle and bustle of daily living and count our blessing. be thankful...and to tell people you are thankful for them...like i am of all the members of nt. :grouphug:
oh...and it's day of food food food...parades and football. :D then more food. thank you brian for asking. :) |
Unfortunately--
--not all the hustle and bustle is stopping today (or even slowing down).
As most know, the Firday after Thanksgivng is the busiest shopping day of the year in the US, with many retailers having massive price reduction sales that start at ungodly hours of the morning, causing rowdy crowds to gather and jostle and break outin angry disputes--obviously to promote good will towards our fellow human beings for the holiday season. I have just been informed, though, by the more shoppingly inclined, that a number of retailers, notably Wal-mart and Sears, worried over the state of the economy and thier bottom lines, are starting said sales today. in fact, they've been going on for a few hours now. I'm wondering, after I put the turkey in the oven, if I should wander over to the local Sears and watch the show. Best free theater in the area. Not buy anything (shopping anywhere but in a supermarket or on-line is like getting my fingernails pulled out in slow-motion), but watch. :p |
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Well Glenn--I used to work for Kmart and they have been open on Thanksgiving for years. I always had to work it and there were always people waiting at the door. Many people, who aren't doing the cooking, will go shopping before the big meal. The sales were always a big secret too, we were sworn to secrecy and in trouble if word got out before it was suppose too. That last couple of years that I worked for Kmart, I worked 6-6 on Thanksgiving, which really messed up my holiday and then I had to be back at 6am the next day. I personally hate this shopping weekend!!!! I just spoke to my daughter in Michigan, well maybe an hour ago and it's snowing and promises to snow all day, was only 29 degrees then. She said there was alread 1.9" in Lansing, may make traveling dangerous there today if it continues.:( Here on Long Island, NY it's 45 degrees right now and they are saying 62 later--very weird weather huh? I miss my family today--hope they will all be safe while traveling. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Deb |
Thanksgiving is not a holiday my family and i celebrate. However i've always thought it is a nice ocassion to tell people how important they are to you. I want to thank you for your constant help and good wishes. Happy Thanksgiving!!
|
Greetings All!!
We've had a busy day around here so just getting around to wishing everyone a Great Thanksgiving! I didn't cook a big meal today since I only have today and tomorrow off for the holiday. Instead we took Mike's grandfather and went out for a turkey dinner meal. I'm like those of you though who miss having a big dinner with the whole family. My family is in Nebraska so that makes holidays difficult some times. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday! |
I heard people were already lined up. I saw on Tv like Kohls opens at 4 am. I know Kmart was open today. For me to stand outside all night it better be a car there giving for free. The rush of the season begins where everyone is in a hurry. The chaos I don't loke and your comment glenntaj was funny. I'm the same way.Darlin my mom siad it snowed in MI too. In Ca its nice and sunny.I alwats forget Thanksgiving is not everywhere. My friend in Canada had theres last month. Well many Happy Wishes again and to all those shopping tomorrow be careful. We all seem to be sensitive and prone to issues and you know the public they will push you right over for a sale.
|
Daniella: I had to laugh when I read your post about shoppers running you over when they are at a sale. That happened to me a long long time ago.
There was a synagogue having a flea market and it was to begin at 7:30 p.m one night. So Alan and I took a walk there and there were all these people in front of the door. I said to Alan, "what's going on here?, are they giving the stuff away?" I had never been to that type of flea market before. Well, you would not believe what happened. When the doors opened up, it was like they were giving away automobiles or something expensive. The people rushed in to the place in droves. I could not believe it. I tried to go down one of the aisles and all of a sudden I landed on top of a table of brassieres. Alan looks down at me and says "Melody, do you realize you are in a pile of bras???" I had never been pushed like that in my life'. I said 'get me up and get us out of here". We had to run for our lives. The people were like bulls in a china shop. Then we became flea market people ourselves and I used to make baby socks and design and paint them. We did this for years at various flea markets. It's better to be the one selling the stuff. You stay behind the tables. Mel |
This morning on tv, they showed these fools who camped out at Best Buy in Huntington, so they would be the first ones there when the doors opened this morning. Now, there is no sale good enough for me to camp out on a sidewalk in November! There is no sale good enough for me to camp out on a sidewalk anytime, for that matter!!!!
Thing is, these stores have these huge sales and only get 4 of the sale items in and offer no rainchecks, it's only a lure to get people in the store and people are so gullible, they fall for it every year. I watched 2 women fight over a Barbie doll one year in Walmart, it was hillarious. To be honest, the best sales come in the middle of December anyways. I don't understand why people can't figure that out. Well, I have to go to the bank, I bet the lines should'nt be bad there today!!! I do know, the lines will be nasty for sometime now at the grocery stores.:( Hope you all aren't suffering tummyaches from yesterday, I'm not! Deb |
You know I was just at the grocery and they said today is usually slow cause people have left overs and are shopping. I think people get a high of getting even a small discount and the mad rush of the holiday. Its like a ritual for people they do every year. Go figure. I just think people can be rude sometimes and really takes the pleasure out of the holiday. We do so low key in our family. In MI where I lived things are open on Chirstmas there is even a huge shoe sale and the line at the deli is out the door. Its weird and to me everything should be closed cause you know some of the workers celebrate christmas. It will be super weird here in Ca since I'm used to the cold and snow.Don't miss that at all though. Hope all had a nice day. I'm the grinch that stole the whole holiday thing. I don't like them and will be happy when the new year is here. I hope we all have better times this year in 2008

OK--the "weigh-in" has occurred--
--209.6 pounds.
Needless to say, I am gratified; I did exercise over the week, and stayed away from the gluten-free pumpkin pies (did I mention I adore pumpkin pie?) but I did eat a lot of turkey and vegetables. It does seem as if the simple carbs do me in--so perhaps I dodged that this time (but Chanukah is only a week and a half away, and that involves potato pancakes--latkes , for those who like the term . . .) Anyway, I believe one of my work cohorts actually had the gumption to predict I wouldn't top 210, so she will get two muffins (all that's left). Unfortunately, my wife has just made a cranberry something or other . . . |
Well that is good. So who won the bet in your house?I can't believe almost Chanukah. I like it when it is near Christmas. My gram used to make latkes. Are they fattening? I haven't had them in years. Not big on Jewish tradition foods. I do like Matzo ball soup homemade of course. The size of a tennis ball.Your a trooper cause if people were making bets on my weight I would be peeved. All in good fun I guess. The average person I think gains 7 pounds over the holiday.
|
Daniella, you'll love this!!!
I'm italian, and Alan is jewish.
We were married 27 years ago. I wanted to make him a traditional jewish dinner which of course includes Matzo ball soup. Never even heard of it, let alone cooked it before. So I go and buy a package and follow directions. It says to add water, and let the mixture stand in the bowl for 15 minutes. I will never forget this. Then after 15 minutes elapses, the box said "make 18 matzo balls. I looked at the mixture and said to myself: "18 matzo balls???" "are they kidding, there must be a mistake, there is only enough mixture for 2 balls" So I made two nice size matzo balls. Each was the size of a walnut. So I put these two matzo balls in the broth and cover the pot. I go back in 15 minutes and started to scream. It was like the invasion of the Matzo Balls. Alan comes running in and starts laughing. I thought he lost his mind. I called my jewish sister-in-law and said (and I quote). There are two matzo balls the size of heads of cabbage in my soup pot." 'HELP HELP" Well, after she stopped laughing it was explained to me that matzo balls EXPLODE in the broth and expand to this big size. So I SHOULD have made 18 matzo balls and I would have had enough to feed an army. I asked her "what do I do with these two things?? She said "eat them of course". So I took one, divided it into 10 pieces, and Alan had the biggest bowl of Matzo Ball Soup in history. Never did this again, believe me. mel |
Hate it!! Hate it!!! Hate it!!!
I'm not Jewish. Not even remotely. Southern Girl here with an Irish heritage. I had a dear friend who was Jewish tho and I have eaten Jewish food. I adore it!!! No one around here to cook it for me now. You are all starving me to death today with the potatoe pancakes, matzo ball soup, etc. Quit it!
I'm so envious. I'll get more turkey I imagine for Christmas. Actually, now that I think of it, if my son and his wife come for Christmas, I'll call a local deli and have a vegetable tray and a meat and cheese tray made up. Then I'll have my husband pick it up along with some great bread and spreads. No way can I cook for my son and daughter-in-law. They are vegetarian. Oh, I'll also get some spinach and water chestnut dip and bake a pie or two (frozen). But you are making me want potato pancakes soooo badly. Billye |
Oh My?
Glenn, if you aren't careful, you mite fade away? Can't have that, no way, no how. Got that?
Latkes are well, heaven...unless with gifilte fish...then, I just gotta take a pass. Otherwise, I just gobble 'em up as politely as I can. Billye, if you want, I can check out some middle-eastern recipies for vegetarians, using bulghur wheat, tabbouleh and the like...Most are easy, incorporating veggies into quick stew like meals...Probably all you would need is the ingredients and the kids could make it to their taste... Glenn sorry to get off track here, but feeding FAMILY is an important thing we all know about. Not to mention feeding ourselves well while we're at it. Now, I guess we all have to try to walk, waddle, hobble, thera-band as much of the excess off as possible? Or, do as Cats do? Nap! - j |
Mmmmm, Middle Eastern food, now you've made me hungry for hummus! :D:D:D:D I can't have raw veggies to dip into it anymore, so I've gotten creative and put hummus on rice crackers with feta cheese.
Veggie shish kabobs might be good, with different colors of bell pepper, red onion, tomato, etc. Also, veggie burritos with rice, black beans, salsa and cheese if they eat cheese. And if I had people visiting who were vegetarian, I'd take them to an Indian restaurant as there would be lots of menu choices for them. :D Well, now I've done it. I'm craving lamb curry at 10pm! :D:D fanfaire  |
Glenn,
I taking bets that you won't' make it thru Christmas!!:D You sound as if you are weakening. :p Dahlek, no eastern food in this house. I can't eat any spices, the tongue is too cracked. Cracked equals sore and very painful. But I can make (thanks to the deli area of walmart) a hummus spread. Thanks for reminding me. Grilling outside for the "bobs" in this weather is impossible and they are too hard to eat on a lap tray. Indian restrurants in rural Texas??!! :p We have a Walmart, a Brookshires, a small boutique store, JC Pennys, well you got the idea. We have an "a" of each variety of store. Not much shopping done here. Everyone drives into Dallas for the big shopping even tho it is a long drive. But back to Thanksgiving. I'm really thankful for the one I had. Let's change this thread over to Hannukah for our Jewish Friends. I"ll post a new thread for it. Billye |
Billye:
For your cracked tongue, you might want to try brushing your teeth with Vince powder. I don't know why, but it helps tremendously with the mouth sores. I was thinking that my tongue was cracked when I used this last. It might be worth trying... You can get the pharmacist to order some. It is non-prescription and about $5.00. I get Tom Thumb grocery pharmacy to order it, but I think other pharmacies can get it. It is not usually something kept on hand. Cathie |
to cathie,
Cathie,
I actually ordered some of this stuff a few years ago after you suggested this. I hated the taste of it and tossed it. I do appreciate your effort in posting this. Billye |
Melody that is a funny story. I can picture it.
Billye is your cut like a sore? I get cancker sores all the time and have tried over the counter stuff and I hate it. It just makes my mouth numb but not a good feeling. I agree spices or citrus is not good. Gifilte fish ugh gross. At my gramps house he has that and other things to me similar like liver pate and all those spreads. Not my cup of tea.I do like ruggala if that is how it is spelled. If you go to Boca they have great bakeries and delis that cater to Jewish foods I think. Or Matza Brai like french toast with matza.Yum! What is Chistmas food?Same as Thanksgiving? We sometimes have chinese. I'm sure a wonderful breakfast though. I love big homemade breakfasts. Most restaurant have at least some veg options. My step sister is vegan. I tried a vegan muffin once and it was interesting. I give credit to people who can do it. Random? Does anyone watch Dancing with the stars? I just started at the end but its good show. |
I use Biotene products for the mouth problems. The mouthwash tastes good and seems to help with the cracked tongue. For the really nasty lesions that don't go away after a few days, I have to resort to a prescription steroid paste.
Had to laugh about the Indian restaurant. There's only one in all of Sioux Falls, and it's very small. But it has a good variety of dishes, and not all of them are spicy. Believe it or not, I buy Indian frozen dinners. The brand is Ethnic Gourmet, which I was really surprised to find in South Dakota. My favorite is the Palak Paneer, which is pureed spinach with cheese cubes, and it comes with rice. So, is anyone still eating leftover turkey? :D My mother-in-law sent us home with a bunch, but we polished it off on Sunday. The last of the crustless pumpkin pie vanished yesterday. fanfaire  |
Do you know Amy's brand they have indian food and her meals are wonderful and I think organic.
I know when I got the sores in my mouth my dad told me to wash my mouth out with salt water or mouth wash to kill the bacteria. I'm not saying to do it but I use to spread mine so I guess it was suppose to help but oh my at the time it stings. |
