The WHY & HOW & "HOW COME SO LONG?" of the BrainTalk Crash

:D
Sorry for the duplicity. I have no idea what the answers to these questions are, but if you, having been sucked in by the title, do, please post here. That was an extraordinarily long time for a forum to be "out", and I am very curious.

Curious 10-10-2006 01:13 PM

you might want to check their site.
:)

Chemar 10-10-2006 01:21 PM

Hi and welcome!
yes, I do agree that this is a question best answered there.

I think most people here have moved on, and we all want to just co-exist peacefully and get on with support and info here :)

Bobbi 10-10-2006 01:32 PM

Hello Highhatsize :).

I'm a member at both forums. I don't see a prob. also posting at both. I've "friends" in both places .

DocJohn, who set up the forums here, is planning on changing the name. He didn't do it as a "knock-off" of OBT or BT, but to enable people to re-connect and also have a venue for support - which was sorely missing the duration that BT was down.

What I think is important is that people do have places online that are patient-centered and provide support ;).

DocJohn 10-10-2006 01:43 PM

I know the downtime was far longer than it should have been. And because of travel and my job, I was incognito far longer than I should have been. I sincerely apologize for that.

I'm very open to suggestions and feedback here. I'm truly sorry things were down for as long as they were. The fact of the matter is that, since leaving MGH, BT is something I can only work on in my "spare" time. And my current job keep me busier than I have ever been in my life (working at a startup).
From http://brain.hastypastry.net/forums/...96&postcount=3

The upshot -- JL runs OBT as a site in his spare time and so it takes lower priority in his life.

John

Dear Curious, Chemar and Bobbi,

I am unaware of any contention between BT2 and BT1 nor do I wish to start any. I simply what to know the history of the phenomenon of the crash. Since writing my first post, I have accessed a long thread at BT1 in which John Lester apologizes for the downtime, but doesn't explain how it happened and why it took so long to fix. I'd like to know the answers to those questions, either on this board or on the other.

My impression after a bit of research is that since JL has left MGH, he does not have the time manage the site properly. I sincerely applaud him for the charity and compassion which led him to create it, but if, as has been said on BT1, the site, "lives and dies with John Lester", I would rather post on a forum in whose continuity I have more confidence.

JL's posting have been few. The import of them is that his new lifestyle involves a lot of traveling. If that new lifestyle makes it possible that another crash will occur, why not give the BT management to another person or group who can assure its stabililty?

Curious 10-10-2006 01:58 PM

hi highhatsize,

there are many threads here that go over the issues right here on cff. they are probably on page 3 or 4 by now. long threads. i can try and find some and pm you the links if that would help?

i guess bt1 or jl can best answer any questions as to the why's. :o

Chemar 10-10-2006 02:06 PM

highhatsize,
we plan to be here for as long as DocJohn will keep us so I really hope you will enjoy being here:)

I dont believe anyone but admin at BT really know what happened re the crash etc, and all that has happened when discussion has started on it here is speculation and often hurt feelings,.............

we arent trying to stifle the conversation but rather just to mention that this topic was truly worn out here in the early days (Aug/Sept) and especially now that BT is back up, it is up to admin there to answer these questions.

However, back to here........welcome again and we hope you will enjoy the atmosphere here, and find all the support and info you need. We are evolving and will soon have a new name and colour format, but the heart of this board full of really great members will keep beating strongly as we grow together.

DocJohn 10-10-2006 04:46 PM

As others have suggested, you're probably on the wrong forum to be asking these questions -- only OBT can answer them. I posted the quotes above to show you the answers JL has given to-date and I don't think you're going to get much more, because that's the gist of it.

Good news is, unlike OBT, everything I do has an emergency and disaster plan in place, including plans if I wasn't around any longer. The upshot is, all of this will stay -- it will continue on with or without me. :)

John

bizi 10-10-2006 04:55 PM

You are wonderful John.
thank you for your continued kindness.

loisba 10-10-2006 10:41 PM

Highhatsize, I think you will get a good idea of the differences between the two communities, and the truth behind DocJohn's comment "The upshot -- JL runs OBT as a site in his spare time and so it takes lower priority in his life" if you look up both DocJohn and John Lester in the Member List of their respective communities. John Lester has 23 posts as of today. DocJohn has 786 as of today. It shows the investment of himself that each has made in his community. John Lester just doesn't seem to care that much anymore.

Hi, again.

My computer is giving me trouble and shutting itself down, (and erasing anything that I am currently writing), unpredictably. I earlier tried to post that I was happy to let sleeping dogs lie as regards my question rather than stir up ill feeling, but my computer ate it. I still feel that way.

This seems like a nice site with nice people. I look forward to posting.

lor 10-11-2006 08:56 AM

Come on now, don't be like kids (it seems like some are saying 'mine is better than yours'). Both rooms have good things & bad things. The information is what is important and thats why I visit both. Someone who just goes to BT1 might answer one of my ?'s & someone who just visits BT2 might answer another....see....both places helped.

sincerely, Lorraine

hi h.hatsize:) I remember you from the old board. If my remembering is anywhere near right these days you had much to offer. I* hope you will stay, I think you will like it here.

Some have chosen to go back and forth between the 2 boards, but I didn't find that helpful to me so this is my home now.

Now, on to gremlins eating post & such, I've had a few of those lately but think it is some problem with my computer. If you solve the gremlin issue, please let me know, ok?
take care, Jo

WELCOME HIGHHATSIZE

hello Lorraine, I don't see any kids talking. just a few adults , although a few of us are a bit wacky.

I didn't see your post until I submited mine. I did say some liked using both boards, it just wasn't helpful to me. There are reasons for that , but it has nothing to do with fussing like kids.:)

I'm glad it is helpful to you.;) Julia

lor 10-11-2006 11:17 AM

JoJo hun, I don't know if I saw any kids either, just some that acted LIKE kids, I said. People on BT1 have helped me by, for example, answering my questions about the VNS (I have one). Someone on BT2 made me happy this morning by telling me about Amy Lee.

lor 10-11-2006 11:21 AM

I forgot to say, 'I know', to 'you know'

Chemar 10-11-2006 11:28 AM

Hi Lorraine:)
I have many friends on both boards and I care about them all equally.
I certainly feel that the replies on this thread primarily emphasized that we dont want to open up any negative discussion toward BT
Both places exist to provide support and information to people who need it. That is ALL that really matters

soooo
lets get on with the good stuff here then shall we :D

lor 10-11-2006 01:19 PM

Yeah Chemar :)

Oh I mean no hard by what I posted:) Guess I don't know how to express myself in order for others to understand me.

I did say the back and forth didn't work for me, but I also have many very good friends that stayed or come back and forth. A personal choice:eek:

I also wanted Highhatsize to know it was cool, which ever he decided:)

So........... Chemar, start singing, you hear?:p I love it, really I do. That fits perfect and I'm glad I saw it. love to you all, Jo

Chemar 10-11-2006 02:40 PM

you did good Jo :) I sure understood your post...but then I always hear your song:p

If Spinal Disorders 2 crashed, then all info was lost? Right. So the new spinal disorders ( as a subset of MGH Neurology/Neurosurgery ) should be 'Spinal Disorders 3'. I would think. So where in outerspace am I? Not that it matters in terms of the family of friends with similar problems and the support they offer...I guess home is where you hang your hat - with two hats you can have two homes.

Just my two cents

Hi All:

This may be the wrong site to get the answers regarding the bt crash and prolonged absence but It seems to me that since bt is essential a part time venture for JL at this point answers wont be forthcoming from that forum regarding this crash. Asking may not get you anywhere there.

The prior crash at that site was a different matter it seems because the users were given regular updates on what was wrong and what was being done to remedy the situation. Based on the postings here the same surely isn't the case with this crash and maybe the real answers will never be known to the user community.

Seems that they don't like to be pressed for answers in bt so I would tread lightly when trying to get an answer or you might get a warning for challenging a moderator or administrator

Regards
Mister

I agree with this. I would never bash BT, It saved my well being at the time I was active there, but, now, I find it uncomfortable. It's just not home anymore.

NeuroTalk is day by day becoming more like home.:)

You must be crityback595! :D That's your Member #.

mister 10-27-2006 12:45 PM

home for many of us seems to be here

So many of us who were once at bt find this place to be home now. I am signed into both but find this site much more welcoming and friendly.

This site has a matter of style that makes it more comfortable to me than many other sites can be. Long live Neuro Talk

Regards
Mister

Julie 10-27-2006 01:13 PM

I'm kinda partial to this place too!

loisba 10-27-2006 07:49 PM

Nice to see so many at home here. Just tried going to OBT to check on the MG forum there, and got "Sorry, the board is unavailable at the moment while tweaking a few forum settings. We will be back soon." I'm glad NT is here, stable, available, and sooooo friendly!!! :D
Hugs,

southernlady 10-27-2006 08:59 PM

loisba, as a forum admin myself, I've been known to take MY forum offline to do some tweaking. There are just some settings/updates/hacks that can not be added while the board is active. And all MY people get is the *Sorry it's offline right now, be back soon*. Liz

Phillipe 10-28-2006 06:16 AM

Obt

Agree....OBT is not home anymore. There is no warm and cozy feelings over there. :o

It is their way or the highway. Never use to be that way but after almost 9 years...it was time to pack and call the movers. I am soo glad I did.

Have a great week-end!~!~! Watch Football!~! :p
