Favorite Christmas Carol?

Mine is O' Come All Ye Faithful.

I have the best memories of it. Each Sunday I would go to church with my Grandmother. She loved Christmas. I would love going to church with her during the season and singing all the Christmas carols. This was her favorite as well as we would just sing the loudest everytime they played it.

Warm :hug::hug: for everyone.

Happy Holidays.

Alffe 12-13-2007 01:15 PM

Joy to the World I guess is my favorite...hard to pick just one. *grin

Chemar 12-13-2007 01:23 PM

I vary from year to year....this year "Mary Did You Know?" is my #1 followed by "What Child is This?" :)

What if Jesus Comes Back Like That

He came to town on an old freight train
He jumped off in the puring rain
Everybody says he's insane
Just a low down account hobo

He made his bed beneath the county bridge
The town folks said that's not his
They signed a petition they're gonna get rid
Of that white trash low down no count

What if Jesus comes back like that
On an old freight train in a hobo hat
Will we let him in or turn our back
What if Jesus comes back like that
Hey what if Jesus comes back like that

Born with a habit of drug abuse
She couldn't help what her mama used
It wasn't like she got to choose
Now she's layin' there all alone

Got a monkey on her back
Nurses say they never saw a smile like that
Doctor says she might stand a chance
If somebody takes her home

What if Jesus comes back like that
Two months early and hooked on crack
Will we let him in or turn our back
What if Jesus comes back like that
Oh what if Jesus comes back like that

Nobody said life is fair
We've all got a cross to bear
When it gets a little hard to care
Just think of Jesus hanging there

He came to town on a cold dark night
A single star was his only light
The baby born that silent night
A manger for his bed

What if Jesus comes back like that
Where will he find out hearts are at
Will he let us in or turn his back
Hey what if Jesus comes back like that
Yeh what if Jesus comes back like that
Will he cry when he sees where our hearts are at
Will he let us in or turn his back
Hey what if Jesus comes back like that
Oh what if Jesus comes back like that

"I'll Be Home for Christmas."

mrsD 12-13-2007 02:52 PM

can we have two?

My #1 fave is Oh, Holy Night.

runner up is Carol of the Bells.

Abbie 12-13-2007 04:37 PM

Mine is the Hallelujah Chorus/Handel's Messiah.

We practiced that song from day 1 of each school year, every day until the final show before school break.

We had over 500 high school kids, in red choir robes, on stage singing that song... it was beautiful!!! Every time I hear it today it brings back great memories and give me goose bumps!!

Josh Groban:

Celine Dion.... also a beautiful interpretion:

with more feeling! also some of the longest notes you will ever hear!

And almost 50 yrs ago... This beautiful gentle version by Johnny Mathis--when his voice was at its peak. This is the one that I still like the best. Also a long phrase at the end, but with more feeling!

I personally think Johnny's is the best.... He was terrific when his voice was at its peak!

This carole never ceases to move me. I think it is the emotive power of the music...some magical beauty.
(also it is a very difficult piece to attempt.... IMO)

I just had to search them out... for myself and for you!

Alffe 12-13-2007 06:03 PM

Thank you Mrs.D but we cannot leave out this.....

Mary Did You Know is also a fav of mine.

I REALLY love "Christmas Canon" by Trans Siberien Orchestra the most right now though (not to be confused with Christmas Canon Rock also by the same group).

Here's the version I love at MSN videos...

Enjoy!

Now I must say you guys have gotten me into the holiday spirit! :D

I bought the new Josh Groban Christmas Carol CD from Starbucks and have been listening all day. He sounds beautiful.

Carols are truly a wonderful way to feel the spirit.

Thanks for this information on three of my favorite singers. The videos were great.

My favorite christmas carol is also "O Holy Night" It just gets into my soul.

Have a Merry Christmas

Joyce

Is there a difference between a Christmas Carol and a Christmas Song? If so, I think I messed up 'cuz I cited a song. If not, I'll stick with the one I noted :D.

Alffe 12-13-2007 07:01 PM

You're not talking bout Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire...are you? :D

Joy to the World

If I had to choose just one, it would probably have to be Oh Holy Night. We recorded a Christmas album when I was in high school Acapella choir and that song was recorded with the help of a pipe organ at a local church. I still think of those days as I sing that song...even in church choir this coming Sunday it will be our closing song of the choir cantata.
Joy to the world runs a close second..can almost here the excitement of the newborn baby Jesus with the words of that song.
I notice many have mentioned Mary did you know as a fav. I love the words of the song, but have heard many butchered attempts at singing in in the past several yrs by ones at church. I shouldn't complain about someone having the GUTS to get up there in front of the congregation and SING, no matter how bad it sounds. LOL
Trans Siberian has a lot of good ones...when you are busy around the house and just want some good holiday background music...that's my one of choice.

I also bought Josh Groban's Christmas CD from Starbucks and it has been playing continuously in my car. :)

One of my favourite carols is 'The Angel Gabriel'

I have it on a CD called 'Midwinter' by Terry McDade and the McDades:

http://cdbaby.com/cd/mcdades1

It is the first song. I am going to the McDade's Candlelight Christmas concert again and if they don't play this carol then I will request it!

The angel Gabriel from heaven came,
his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame;
"All hail," said he, "thou lowly maiden, Mary,
most highly favored lady,"
Gloria!

"For know a blessed Mother thou shalt be,
all generations laud and honor thee,
thy Son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold,
most highly favored lady,"
Gloria!

Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head,
"To me be as it pleaseth God," she said,
"my soul shall laud and magnify his holy Name."
Most highly favored lady,
Gloria!

Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ was born
in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,
and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say
"Most highly favored lady,"
Gloria!

Words: Basque carol; para. Sabine Baring-Gould (19thC)

There are so many to choose from, but I guess "O'Holy Night" is the winner.

Then again everytime I see little ones sing as in "Christmas Canon" it brings such joy to me eyes and ears.

Alffe 12-14-2007 07:21 AM

It wouldn't be Christmas without this.....*grin
