I want a Waterhorse

I went to The Waterhorse, and it was truly one of the most delightful movies.

I don't go to more than a few movies per year, as I cry thru most of them, and I simply will not go to anything gory or too intense. That often doesn't leave me much to see.

I still cried thru most of the Waterhorse, which is in many places very cute and funny. I will not give out the plot, setting nor ending....but if you want a truly heartwarming experience, this is it...

And the question of the day is....what is the only mammal on earth that lays eggs???

Some of you may have them nearby!

mrsD 01-06-2008 07:13 PM

I saw an extended preview

on the TVs in the store yesterday. It looks like a very cute movie!

And like you I'd cry buckets and get a sinus headache for 2 days!

The platypuss! of course, lays eggs.

You like cute movies?... See Simon Birch. And have a whole box of Kleenex handy as well! <sniff sniff> This is a period piece circa 1940's.
You'll have to rent it...it is about 10 yrs old now. It has alot of humor in it, and it is touching. The sobs don't arrive until the end.

cyclelops 01-06-2008 07:45 PM

You WIN!! Yes the platypus...from down under I believe...not sure of the habitat of the unique creature. Not quite a waterhorse...but close enough.

Now what it the prize....hmm....

here ya go:hug:

Oh, I saw Sweeny Todd also. Will someone please tell me what the heck is so fascinating about a barber who slits throats??. I never in all my life saw such blood. YUCK!!!!

Can't tell you where I saw these. Then you'd have to shoot me!!!! lol

Mel, in the old days, BARBERS did some forms of surgery..blood letting, dentistry etc. Doctor's didn't become surgeons and solidify the profession, until more recently. (last 100 yrs or so.)

Here is the "criminal history" of Sweeney Todd:
http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_k...d/index_1.html
It is pretty interesting.

Looks like Johnny Depp is well suited to this role. I think he is creepy...and does these roles well. (I won't be attending this movie however! )

MelodyL 01-06-2008 11:00 PM

I must have seen 5 Sweeney Todds in the last two days. They played on on cable last night (with Ben Kingsley). It was not a musical.

then I saw (on youtube or google), the one with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury. Then today I saw anothr one made for BBC with David Warner.

And yesterday, I saw the one with Johnny Depp and Helen Bonham Carter.

I am Sweeney Todded to Death!!!!

Ah, Barbers did surgery???? AAAGHGH.

Reminds me when Alan took me to Colonial Williamsburgh and everybody there is dressed in period costumes. You thought you stepped back in time.

We were strolling around (I was actually bored to death but Alan was having the time of his life). and we walked into a Blacksmith place. And the guy was doing something to horseshoes, and there was this giant thing on the table and I happened to ask him what this giant thing was? And the actor (still in character), looks at me and says 'why Maam, I also pull teeth".

I never ran out of a place so fast in all my life. Alan burst out laughing and had to explain to the actor that I'm a dental phobic. I wouldn't go back in that place if you paid me a million dollars.

I still can't get over the fact that blacksmiths used to pull teeth.

Oh my god.

I would have died in Colonial Williamsburg.

Also--

--the Echidna, or spiny anteater, is also a mammal that lays eggs. it normally carries the egg in a small pouch until it hatches, and then carries the young in there for a while like marsupials do.

The playpus and echidna are the only lliving representatives of the primitive mammalian order monotremata.

MelodyL 01-07-2008 10:07 AM

Did you know that the Platypus has 10 sex hormones. I have no idea what this means.

Here's a photo. It really doensn't look anything like The Waterhorse. It really is an odd looking mammal.

cyclelops 01-07-2008 10:29 AM

Glenntaj

You must have majored in zoology!! Or at least paid attention in class.

I was unaware of a second egg laying mammal...I will have to look it up to see what it looks like.

You win a bigger prize...hmm, well there isn't an icon for anything better than a hug...well maybe a:grouphug: or :p

As much as I loved The Waterhorse, and want one...the movie carried a very good lesson...to leave things in nature where they should be. Alas, there would be no good place for a Waterhorse, nor platypus in my area....and Crusoe, he/she needed to be wild.

I did have a giant spider in the garden for the summer named Charlotte, but
we respectfully kept our distance from each other.

So Glenntaj...is there an adrongenous--or should I say bi-gendered egg laying mammal? I know I remember hearing that some higher order animals are capable of asexual reproduction...I can't think of what they are. I guess what I am asking is there any higher order animal, that is both male and female...especially a mammal? This movie was based on an unusual scientific/mythical premise....quite creative.

We are having a thunderstorm....my gosh, it is January....global warming is back to my area..or PERHAPS all the political hot air coming up from Iowa!!....heaven help us if this freezes.

cyclelops 01-07-2008 10:35 AM

Mel

That was an interesting article!!!

You know they kind of simplified the human sex determination thing to X and Y...there are more. Off hand I think I remember an XO and an XXY or was it XYY...there are some odd combinations out there....makes ya wonder. Maybe some one else knows more about that....if we want to know any more about that.

I do think genetics and evolution is a pretty wonderous thing. There was just a recent article on homo sapiens and neanderthals 'admixing'.

That platypus is a wonder.

As to "Todd", Depp is a very versatile character actor, & I like musicals.
That was the only reason whyI attended the movie, last week.

Popcorn & 'Raisinets' in hand..........
(I seldom get to the movies, I prefer live stage, both drama & musicals - and go to NY as often as possible to see it at its best, altho my local community & professional theatres do a fine job here too), I sat down to one of the most exciting films Depp has made (incuding the "Pirates" films - more like his "Jack the Ripper" one -forgot the titile- with music).
His ability to be a character actor at his age (most charcter actors are middle aged to elderly) gives credit to his art.
I can appreciate his ability to do a musical, his first, when he has only done dramas. Not an easy task without having the vocals dubbed by someone else.
It was much gorier than the stage play that it was modeled after,
but that's Hollywood for ya. The ability to infer the gore, is-I think, more challenging than to show it. But movie goers are into the gore and excitement of action movies and horror-mystery thrillers.
So, the movie makers are pandering to the public thrill & gore seekers. It did not alter my evaluation of the quality of the flick.
This will be nomiated this year, I believe.
It may even win some awards.
It deserves it.

Now lets see if Depp can do a classic comedy, not a dark one - but a classic - complete with pratt-falls and spit-takes.
That'll complete his repitoire.;)

cyclelops 01-07-2008 11:29 AM

I honestly can not go to a movie that is TOO exciting....I get an autonomic attack....

I can't watch a war movie as I get PTSD from my son's deployment!!..and I cry thu the whole thing.

I can not watch gore.

Alas, I am confined to the kids stuff, and comedies...comedies are great.

Oh I hit a live concert or performance now and then...just saw 'America' in the fall...they were great. 'Ventura Highway....' "Horse with No Name'...our next adventure is one of those knock off Cirque de Soleil things...I don't live anywhere near Broadway.

I have the most wonderful family that seems to know that I lost most of the plans I had for the 'second half' of my life when we closed my business, and I got this disease, which pretty much wiped out my fun runs and bike races and tours.....my husband and kids buy me tickets to all kinds of things and force me to move....when many days I would rather sulk.

I was on my way to getting back to taking long therapeutic walks, had two good ones under my belt....and today we had rain and now fog so bad I can not see from the house to the road, literally....the snow and ice is covered with wet rain. There is nothing slipperier than wet ice...if I fell in this fog, no one would see me for what could be days....uless they had a thermal imaging camera. Any normal person could not stand on this wet ice, let alone me.

I am determined not to turn on the TV until noon...I did get Sirius radio for Christmas...that is going right now.

Thank goodness for the Waterhorse and similar genre.

MelodyL 01-07-2008 11:47 AM

If you want to see anything that HAS EVER BEEN IN THE MOVIES, LIVE THEATERE,...WELL ANYTHING. Just go to youtube and type in whatever you are looking for.

I think youtube is the greatest thing on this earth. I've seen more stuff on youtube than you can imagine.

I love the internet. It's got more free stuff (movies, tv shows, WHATEVER), so I can enjoy something without breaking the bank.

Of course nothing compares to live stage. I've seen a few musicals BUT, with my arthritis and with Alan's PN, well, who on earth can fit in those cramped seats. I kept trying to straighten out my legs (couldn't do it), and Alan was shaking his leg to deal with his PN. So going to these places is not in our best interest. It's counter-productive.

So we just go on the computer and enjoy the same thing. Sometimes it's even better because you get to see close up.

I've seen MAMMA MIA, I've seen Dreamgirls (on youtube, they have many various versions), and my favorite is the one with Jennifer Holiday singing her heart out to Cleavant Derricks. Holy Moly, can that woman sing!!!

Youtube (as well as other sites), gives us the ability to view things we might never have been able to see.

I for one hope it stays around for a long time.

And Alan is busy making videos, thinking he's the next karaoke singer. Keeps his mind off his feet.

melody
P.S. How come I'm the only one using the webcam and making videos and uploading to youtube. I'd like to see what the rest of you look like.
So come on, be brave.

cyclelops 01-07-2008 01:33 PM

Speaking of Waterhorses....I have to sit on the aisle...I have a water balance issue....it has something to do with the autonomic neuropathy, but if my system decides I have too much fluid....Katie bar the door....:D

I have no control issues...I mean I can hold it for a long time....but I go thru times when the old brain just says....dump fluid....and it is every 5 to 15 minutes for a while...and it is not my imagination. I assume there is cardiac or arterio-venous feedback that says shed that water or we are going to over load....so my bilge empties.

I had one run during the movie...at a critical point in time....and hubby had to tell me two big things I missed.

Aussie99 01-07-2008 04:17 PM

I am totally jelous of anyone

near or in New York City. It has been my dream to go out to dinner in one of those fancy restaurants that a limo drops you off at,and then takes me to a Broadway show.

I just want to walk around Manhattan and go see all the sights including the Staue of Liberty. I would think that it is all very exciting. The culture the clothes, the cafes.

I would also like to go visit and place some flowers down at Ground Zero, as many fellow Australians have gone to pay there respects.

One day this is my hope, that I am well enough and I am free enough from this PN and anxiety to take my son (my best friend), jump on a plane and take him to see New York.

cyclelops 01-07-2008 04:26 PM

Well NY is truly one of a kind, and on 9/11 we were all New Yorkers.

Me? I would like to see me a roo, mate.

glenntaj 01-07-2008 05:08 PM

See, I'm New York born and raised--

--have lived here almost all of my life, and as a result, take far too much of what this city has to offer for granted. (I also want to go see the wallabies, and the kiwis . . .)

BTW, I do not know of any higher vertebrates that are bi-sexual or hemaphroditic in nature, although thre are apparently some reptiles, and a number of fish, that can change gender in response to environmental stimuli, and I recently read that some fish can reproduce without male and female sex cells meeting (though genetic diversity is still the preferred route).

As for knowing about the echidna--not a zoology major, just an autodidactic geek. :D

MelodyL 01-07-2008 05:18 PM

Wouldn't it be cool to be able to change gender?? Even for a day.

I know what I'd want to look like. Like one of those American Gladiators that I saw on tv last night. I had never seen this show. Alan calls me in the living room and says to me "you like guys arms, right?" and I said 'of course, you know I love guys with big beefy arms".

Well, he shows me the American Gladiators and on the screen are these 6 foot 6 inch 250lb guys with arms out to here. I thought I lost my mind. I said 'I want a piece of that'. Alan laughed his head off.

I said 'what happens when one of the contestants wins the match?" Alan responds all excitedly: "Why, he gets to be a gladiator"!!!!

My response: "Get real, this is not the Roman Colosseum, we don't have Gladiators in America". I never saw him laugh so much.

I watched a whole bunch of grown men running around, banging into each other (and woman gladiators too), knocking each other off of platforms, into this big pool. Then there was this contest where one itsy bitty guy has to run the gauntlet and mow down 4 he-man gladiators. He never made it.

I just looked at Alan and said "too much testosterone for me.

If I could change, actually I wouldn't change genders, I would however change bodies. I'd take Mariah Carey any day of the week.

cyclelops 01-07-2008 05:26 PM

My daughter does research on a creek I can't mention, but it is near a small city. About a mile down from the water treatment plant they found most of the fish are female....they are mostly hatching females. There are very few males left. There are high levels of estrogen in the water from human urine, and dumped pharmaceuticals. This is frightening stuff...estrogen does not come out of the water in filtration. There is also a study on the Inuit, and that they are giving birth to far more girls than boys...they of course, eat a lot of seafood, and blubber, fat stores estrogen. It is amazing what a footprint we have left on the environment. There is some interest in finding out how much SSRI is present in ground water as well.

Thanks for that 'hermaphrodite' thing...I just could NOT come up with the word. It bugs me when a word elludes me. Your brain stays sharp as a tack.

cyclelops 01-07-2008 05:32 PM

Mel...I would like to be in your brain one day...:D

Mel, maybe I can take off my HRT patch....kinda morph like the Hulk....

nevermind...couldn't take the hot flahes, or stray hairs...I think I will stay me, whoever that is.

I have enough issues without gender bending.
I still can't find my mood! That is enough of an identity crisis for me.
Life is hard enough for me:o

mrsD 01-07-2008 05:48 PM

gender bender?

I don't think I have ever thought about being a man.. I don't think I'd ever want too. Nope

MelodyL 01-07-2008 07:43 PM

Cyclelops:

If you are impressed by the word HERMAPHRODITE, look up the word CHIMERA on google.

I have never heard of such a thing in all my life.

One of my soaps "All My Children" last year, did a story on one of the characters. Her name is Annie on the soap and she's a Chimera. She actually has two sets of DNA in her body!!!

Fascinating stuff

cyclelops 01-08-2008 02:16 PM

Yes I am aware of Chimeras....

I offhandedly remarked that when they look at me for genetic disease they are likely to find me as my own twin. I am not. I am one of a kind I guess.

Chimeras are at risk for several reasons....mostly legal....paternity and maternity issues, and crime....I am thankful I have only one set of DNA. I have enough problems with one set of DNA.

Chimerism is quite rare, and very interesting. We are learning more and more about life all the time.

National Geographic has a human genome mapping project going on that looks a bit like a fun endeavor. It is anonymous. I guess they have assembled quite a data base....they give you the rough locations of your far ancestors. It is for anthropology study, not medical. They do either mitochrondrial DNA from mom or for men, they do the Y chromosome.

MelodyL 01-08-2008 03:42 PM

Isn't this a fascinating thread.

Oh, I watched the Discovery channel last night. They had this special on Brookhaven Center in NYC. It houses 75 morbidly obese people.

I have never in all my life, really understood what these people have to endure. They are hoisted up in cranes to get them out of their houses, and then they are put on a 1200 calorie a day diet at Brookhaven.

Guess what one of the 800 lb men did?? He would order in pizzas. He's been there for 4 years and never left the bed.

Depression really kills people. And to me, all this is a result of severe depression that makes these people cope by over-eating.

They actually got the guy out of the bed (took 13 people and some hoisting device), and got him to the gym where he he was lifting weights.

I hope he makes it.

Fascinating stuff on the Discovery Channel. We never had programs like this 30 years ago.

All we had was HOWDY DOODY!!! Did I say 30 years ago?? I meant 55 years ago.

God I'm getting old.
