Hi--

So, those of you who know my story know I had spine surgery in feb 2006, which didn't heal.

I have no choice but have more surgery now. Four loose screws are a threat to the safety of my spine now. The doctors are afraid that if I fall, a pedicle could fracture, and that if we don't do something, eventually very bad things will happen. A year is about the longest they like to let people walk around with loose screws.

So, today I had an epidural, or two: L5/S1 and L4/L5. I'm hoping this holds me for a couple of months.

I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow morning, returning Jan 21, and on Jan 25 I will have a myelogram, which will help direct the surgeon to exactly how much he has to do.

What is definite is that it's anterior/posterior "cages" and screws and rods again. How many levels is not clear

But also, I injured my shoulder, and the pain guy thinks there's a tear, and that I need a shoulder ortho and MRI when I return also.

His basic instruction: don't fall.

I've gotten those wonderful collapsable trekking poles, and am bringing pastels and pencils, so if the going feels too tough, I can just hang out and zone or draw.

"see" you all when you return, and my Brooklyn posse (you know who you are)--I'm going to be counting on you again!

I just want to continue to get and stay strong until the surgery, that's all. It's just one big do-over, is how I'm trying to look at it.

I understand the need to go and vacation...before all that potential possible 'bedrest'.... I truly hope this does SOMETHING to ease your pain!

Good person, best person...I truly want some parts of your pain GONE! I for one also, would be far happier knowing someone I respect is free of those...well, how to put it well? Danged loose screws in your back! That must be a constant worry about any basic function of life in general for sure.

Am I right in surmising, that after the surgery, you will be in some sort of 'frame'? THAT does not sound like fun at all! Actually less than? Silly question...but needed to ask.

I know I like to joke about having a few screws loose :D, but to ACTUALLY have this be the case is a different story altogether :eek: A friend of mine had to have neck surgery redone for the same reason; the recovery was slow, but the surgery was a success, much to her and everyone else's relief.

Hope the injections help and that you can enjoy your vacation. I went to Florida in October (on a shoestring budget), and even though I was probably pushing myself too hard, I made sure I did a few things I enjoyed because I have no idea when I'll be able to travel again. Really helps the outlook when you can take even a small break from the ordinary.

Have a restful trip so you come back ready for surgery.... like Fanfaire, had a friend who also had to have her neck done twice - (the disk below her first fusion collapsed) - she too had a long recovery but is fine and painfree most of the time!

Enjoy those hammocks and the MaiTai's! Come back and share all the pictures. I enjoyed them so much the last time you went. I felt like I'd been to an island! :p

I'll give you all the support I can when you get back. Maybe other goodies too...who knows? Chocolate travels both ways! :D

Have a good trip and don't do anything I wouldn't do....(This gives you some latitude;)).

Vacations are a time to focus on the present...have the 'time of your life'.:D

The jungle is luscious, my kids are here with me, and we're taking nice easy tours with lovely local guides showing us mayan ruins, caves, and local fauna and flora.
